I was thinking more along the lines of their willingness to cooperate in the learning process, but I suppose there are a lot of impediments to educating yourself in basic literacy at such an advanced age.
Oh definitely. English as a Second Language (ESL) students especially. VERY eager, very kind and polite. I definitely recommend looking for some literacy councils or classes in the area - they always need more tutors! The local library should know of which agencies are available in the area.
Quite the opposite, actually! I was the history/poli sci/logic tutor for my first college.
Working with adults in basic literacy has been completely different. More learning difficulties, constant repetition... progress is slow and unsteady. Very skip and go. That said, it's extraordinarily rewarding.
It's interesting how suddenly having a student learn the difference between a "b" and a "d" becomes this stunning victory. It's great.
Literacy = access to words. Words = access to the great ideas. Independent thought = access to freedom. Important work!

Good point.
I never considered that aspect of the problem.

Great video.
I especially liked the song that served as an introduction.
I worked as a peer tutor back in college.
I suppose working with older adults is a bit easier though.
