Emerson should lose their accreditation. It's a bullshit school, and they lie outright to their students. I'm poor and got financial aid to go, but I still racked up a lot of debt that I will pay for the next 30 years of my life. I knew more than some of my professors, and one of whom was a drunk. Anybody with talent and their heart set on filmmaking should just move to L.A. and start interning right away. In four years you'll make more progress and go in less debt.

Sounds like you just had a bad experience and that you missed the point of going to a college. Sorry to hear that. I was in New Media and had a blast, got the kind of experience I wanted out of it, learned a ton.

Also, potential employers in LA and NYC love to hear that you come from Emerson. I can't tell you how many times people have related to me just because I toss the college's name at them.

Meh. I didn't miss any point. Money is money. Sure, Emerson is a good name, and I'll even add I networked/made some great friends while I was there. But the truth is, a film "student" can work on Emerson projects, network with students, put those thousands into a film project that's run way more efficiently, all without paying a dime to Emerson. In the end going to Emerson vs other routes doesn't carry any more weight. It's who you know. It's t's what you last did. New Media, TV are different.

I went to Emerson for two years as a film producing major, until my college fund went bust in the recession. I took the skills I learned from co-curricular and non-college projects to get myself a job at a production company in Chicago, and as a media specialist at a restaurant chain. I use zero skills I learned in Emerson classes.

Emerson gives back what you put into it. Don't sit around waiting for their curriculum to catch up to your ambitions, because you'll be waiting well past graduation.
