my dog coughs like that a bit, not as much, and I fear it's because I played fetch with her for too long throwing the stick in the ocean, and I think she got water down her lungs or something from all that swimming and getting the stick with her mouth. Is that dangerous for her?
thats how my dog looks and sounds, she is a 3 year old chihuahua, they seem so scared when they cough like that. i am afraid that it is heartworms, i go this weekend to get a heartworm test, i hope that we can find it early and start treatment to get this resolved. she is like a child to me, it makes me cry to see her not feeling good.

Wow, that is EXACTLY how my dog is coughing. It started two days ago. I took her to the vet last night and she said more then likely kennel cough. Today the dog coughed twice as bad and now doesn't have any energy.
I'm searching around for other possible problems. It's so sad to see your dog sick. I've learned from the past that vets quite often do NOT have the right diagnosis. I'll probably take my dog back in tomorrow....
@RapIsDeadly Maybe you should lay off the Mexican food for a while ... makes your seman spicy. That's why your little pooch, Himmler, is coughing. If you just can't live without your huevos rancheros, collect a few more cans and consider paying for a woman. I'm sure little Himmler could use the break. I hope he feels better.
my dog had a collapsed trachea from pulling to hard on his leash and being a pug. it's heart breaking to hear them cough like that. it also keeps me and my dog up all night since laying down makes it worse. i was looking for videos of dogs coughing to demonstrate to my friends how heart breaking and also loud it is. did you guys find a diagnosis?
MY DOG IT'S IN THE SAME SITUATIONS AS YOU HE HAS AN ENLARGED HEART and hes almost 14 year old hes a very good dog but hes now too sick and the weather doesn't help him T^T ( ITs TOO COLD) i really hope your dog live much longer and enjoy every moment with him because that sickness can't be cured T^T
my dog does this sometimes too, but the he coughs after he hacks then walks it off. he likes to find things in the rug and chew them. it's like every two months he has bad diarrhea and he throws up. The sound annoys my mother, though.
My dog is coughing like that because of an enlarged heart and some extra fluid in her chest..Our vet put her on heart meds and water pills. It's helping a little.
@jasonford1982 though our vet ruled out heartworms in Prescott's case, you're right that coughing is a symptom of heartworms. That's why it's so important -- as I and many other commenters have stressed -- to see a vet.
Not all dog coughs are kennel cough. My dog was coughing like that and was diagnosed with pneumonia due to blastomycosis. It can be fatal if not treated properly. It's imperative to take your pet to the vet. I had no idea he could have blasto, the results from my online search were leading to either kennel cough or canine influenza, which delayed my visit to the vet. Wanted to share my experience with other pet owners, get informed but don't rely solely on internet research.
@4drapers Thanks so much for sharing. It's scary because coughing like our dogs experienced is a symptom of so many conditions -- many of which are fatal if untreated. I hope you guys are doing well now. Prescott sends a hello!
@pseudospeak Thank you. Onyx is doing great, treatment is about 6 months long. I felt so guilty I didn't take him in a couple of weeks earlier, but we caught it just in time. Blastomycosis is a fungus that he inhaled, most likely by a lake or river (we had a huge outbreak in this area in 2010). Vet took x-rays and ran urine test to confirm his diagnosis. We tried Fluconazole but didn't work and then changed to Itraconazale, super expensive but it's working. Onyx says hello to Prescott. :)
@spencer2801 prescott's doing much better now that we have him on steroid therapy. Still coughing, but significantly less than before. How's your dog doing? Hope you guys are finding some relief, too!
@pseudospeak I am so glad that Prescott is doing better, Spencer, well, his heart has enlaged so much its pushing up on his wind pipe. There isnt anything we can do. Vet wants Spencer to lose some weight and no running of playing because that makes heart pump harded and will cause more blood to back up in his heart. He has one heart value in his heart not closing all the way. His is turning 10 in May so the vet believes he is to old for surgery. Prayers for Prescott
Well, we changed vets and got new x-rays. Prescott shows signs of a bronchoalveolar pattern (totally new term for me), which is also sometimes called "old lung disease." He's gone through a round of new antibiotics, and we're getting ready to start a steroid treatment. He still loves to run up the stairs (a habit we're trying to break) and jumps around for his greenies and cookies. Great appetite. At 15+ years old, we count his energy as a wonderful blessing.
It might be Kennel Cough. It's also called Bordetella. I'm not sure whether my dog has it but it sounds a lot alike. If your dog is old or young, its really hard to fight it off and it can result in pneumonia. That's why I've been up since 2 in the morning. My dog's been spitting up phlegm. My mom is taking her to the vet in the morning. Also, Bordetella is really contagious and you don't have to get it from kenneling your dog. It's an airborne virus. Get a vaccine. Hope for the best.
@BlueTipsyMonkey We ruled put kennel cough quite some time ago. See "UPDATE ON PRESCOTT" posts for most recent developments. We've learned and experienced a lot -- including cancer! -- in this journey of ours. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I can't stress enough how important it is to take your dog to the vet! 8 mos ago, we found cancer in one of Pico's lungs. In for surgery w/in a month; he recovered incredibly. His coughing has just started again though, and we think it may be his heart. Still has appetite, gets happy & jumps around for cookies. But can't last very long on walks (especially in summer), and sleeps a LOT. Most activity causes coughing. Aug 12th, he turns 15! Yes, we're planning a party.
my dog is making those noises n he throws up everytime he eats. hes lost a couple pounds. its been going on for 2 weeks. i wanna take him to the vet but my mom doesnt cuz she says its gonna be expensive. i feel so bad for him hes not the hyper dog anymore =[ does anybody know what might be wrong? i wanna help it
Mydog coughs too, found out she has heart murmur. She's taken meds, but she still coughs. When Iet home from work, she gets really excited and coughs and then faints, so I just carry her when I get home til she calms down...She's m17 years old this month. She's my last of the 3 I had..The 1st one passed away when she was 15yrs old from kidney failure in 04/04/08.. My 2nd passed away at 16yrs old in 10/28/09...All I have now is her sister. She's my last.
Well, it's been nearly a year since I posted this video. Like clockwork, he started coughing again, just as the weather started cooling. Folks, I promise, dogs can have allergies that sound just like this! But you should still DEFINITELY see a vet, because it could be worse... kennel cough, collapsed trachea, possibly even congestive heart failure. We're making sure he's on a good diet to minimize his reactions. Blue brand dogfood in salmon is his new favorite!
oh shits!!!, my dog started making those soounds too 0_0 also a small dog ... he's 17 years old now (im 16 almost 17) i got him for my first birthday as a present :P so i bassicly have him my whole life now but it sounds the same (like he's choking / coughing (almost the same as ur vid) he's doing it for 4 to 6 days or so, (dunno exactly) but i dont like it :'( he doesnt look bothered by it though but it's pretty scary :( first time i heard him do it i though he was choking :(
Hi. My dog has just come down with this type of cough over the past week. She has been fairly consistantly coughing, she has vomited on two or three different days, and she is overall at a loss of energy and her appitite seems to have decreased over the last two days. So, do you think that it could simply be kennel cough? I have been reading up on the reasons for her symptoms and heart worms and things like that might be possible. Any ideas? Thank you for posting this btw, it was helpful.
His allergies have kicked up again with the changing of the seasons, so the coughing has started. Definitely take your dog to the vet... it could be something much worse than simple allergies. Most commonly it's kennel cough, but it could be something even worse. Hope your dog is feeling better soon!
On April 15th our Buffy(aged 14 Min.Poodle) had a nasal vaccine for Kennel Cough....and after 48hrs,she started coughing for long spells...day and night;she still coughs, but it seems to be improving;meanwhile we've had to shell out over $500 for meds,X-rays and blood tests....all of which were negative(thank God)..but before that day in April she was a healthy, happy dog!
Does not mean it's kennel cough! My dog has the same thing happening and has not been in contact with any other dog what so ever!! Please do not mislead people with your forced assumptions you are NOT a vet....
UPDATE: Conditions we explored in diagnosing Prescott include:
- heartworms
- enlarged heart
- collapsed trachea
- allergies (which we think was causing the coughing)
We're not sure if Prescott's allergies were seasonal or food. But once I put him on Avoderm Lamb & Rice (they sell it at Petco), his coughing subsided. Our first cold spell hit right around the same time.
hi, wondering if you are still seeing improvement after the food change. my sheltie is coughing as well, sounds very similiar to your baby. had tests done, slight heart enlargement but i believe it is due to the cough not the other way around. please let us know how you dog is doing, what you have tried and what is anything helps. have you tried any herbal products, ie. hawthorne for heart, etc?
Now that seasons are changing, Prescott's been coughing every once in a while. Short spells though (1-2 coughs)... not nearly as excruciating as in the video.
I'm relatively confident Prescott's cough truly is due to allergies... environmental (which weren't so apparent before we moved to St Louis) compounded by underlying food allergies. As Spring comes, I'll know more and keep an update posted here.
I've been focusing on allergies, so haven't tried Hawthore. Good preventive though.
WOW my dog sounds EXACTLY LIKE THAT OMG is that neumonia or collapsed trachea? give them cough medicine thats what i did for mine ask your vet what kinda though i dont want to recomend the wrong type.
My shih tzu does this to makes me cry because i can't do anything for him every time i walk him he does it :(
