  • sad site glad sume locos gote prerserved live for ever steam

  • What a shame

  • very ghostly isnt it

  • is this the them song from DR. Frankin

  • am I wrong or is the one at 3:40 the engine thomas the tank engine was modeled after?

  • Its sad to see how times have changed, Back then everything was built with such magnificent engineering, Everything was a working system that almost gave it a "Live" feeling Everything from Cars to trains to hell even airplanes. But now everything is Computerized and nothing to it. No Art, no system, Nothing special about it. Its almost sad. Idc if it wasn't it wasn't eco friendly or "Safe", I will always uphold a strong respect for history and its fading glory.

  • @14omega28ok *shrugs* Steam trains and nostalgia are cool, but at least an electrodiesel won't have a catastrophic boiler explosion that turns the engine into an oversized frag grenade. I like these trains, but I just have a general love for technology.

  • @Wafflepudding The risk of a well maintained boiler exploding was about the same Risk as your Gas tank exploding from the heat on a hot day

  • @14omega28ok A gas tank doesn't contain enough high pressure working fluid to tear itself apart and send shards of itself flying for hundreds of meters, and it doesn't depend on active monitoring and lots of parts doing their job properly to maintain structural integrity.

I get what you're saying. When you actually go around looking inside a steam locomotive, it's... hard to describe. It's art and science, it's history, nostalgia and beauty. But I'm glad I never had to actually work IN one.

  • Wow here in the U.S the negros would have had them all scraped out. You should see the things they take here in Detroit , live wires are the funniest. DEATH COMES QUICK.. Love the video .

  • How old is this video? When did you take it?

  • Thumbs up if you miss the days when Giants forged from Steam and Steel roamed the Earth...

  • I am actually crying, yes, I overreact.

  • Cant believe that I saw the Duke of Gloucester in the vid, its in steam tomorrrow on the Nene Valley railway

  • Fabulous colour photos , I lived in Cardiff from 1968 to 1973 but I didn't take any photos of Barry scrapyard - remember it though .

  • its so sad :'(

  • @TheMymama1 like Rosie actualy

  • i feel like im at the smelter yards in thomas and friends, sees all these bit of history about to be scraped and i can hear the engines crying and wanting to be useful again

  • Your vid is two days of my life along time ago, thanks for the visual memory, good stuff !!, puts a tear in my eyes

  • I'm 45 now, when I was 10ish, family went to Butlins at Barry Island, probably in a purple British Leyland "Maxi" , Dad found us a hole in the fence and we spent a couple of days climbing about on these rusting hulks, nobody came telling us to go, no health and safety crap like now, just a square mile of industrial history to climb/play about on, hope all those loco's made it to the owners/restoration people who had their names painted on them, wish I'd had a 1080p camcorder when I was 10 !!!

  • is this Barry Island

  • @Watsupwiya

    Yes mate

  • :,(

  • Unbelievable. Comments on this I mean. Almost all the engines you see here have long since been rescued and are being restored. And as for the "wha't the music", well did anyone ever learn any Beethoven? Seriously. There is this thing called the internet that should make it easy to find out that the scrap rows at Barry are long since emptied. Some famous ex-Barry engines include Duke of Gloucester and the so-called "Hogwarts Castle

  • @dm3830 they were rescued?

  • such a shame to see engines, gone from the daily life to be stood rusting away in an old yard. really sad to see what streamlined boxes on wheels we've got opperating britains railways, instead of the 9f, black 5 and various others. bring e'm back i say rather than have britains loved trains stood in a scrap yard awaiting death. by the way what was the music? great vid subscribed, and liked. again grat video and faved it to! :) (please reply)

  • it's so sad, but yet peaceful (for some reason. idk why)

  • great vid 5* whats the song called?

    thanks nathan

  • @Natbilltv

Hey chap cheers for the comment and rating. its been ages since i made this so i forgot what the music is lol. but i'll find out for u cheers

  • @cookhammanor

I know the song....It is Ludwig Von Bettoven, Moonlight Sinata, Movement 4, but I have never been able to find who did this rendition of it. It is a bit different that the original score, especially at the beginning, and I actually like it better then the original. I would love to have the score on this version. Yes, please advise who did this rendition, or were you got it.

  • @Natbilltv moonlight sonata. just saying.

  • @Natbilltv The Song is Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven

  • @Natbilltv It's an upbeat version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

  • @Natbilltv

The song is a modernized version of Beethoven "Moonlight Sonata"

  • How old is this footage? It's not recent thats for sure. Are there any locos still left at Barry?

  • @KateFan

yh there is but they are stored undercover now awaiting rescue

  • @KateFan . Yes, I remember the North British diesel loco ( 00:21 ) in the 'seventies'. Some of the last locos to leave the yard went to Wales Railway Centre, Cardiff (1988-1989), and I remember getting underneath to grease the bearings before the locos were moved. There is now a Railway Preservation group at Barry, see map of their network at Wikipedia "Barry_Island_Railway".

  • with junk steel at $370.00 per ton. these things are worth more now than when they were new!!

  • I can still imagine them running down the tracks as I watch this, can hear the pistons pumping. Sad, but we can't hang on to it all forever.

  • and when electric takes over diesel & steam stephensons rocket flying scotsman and mallard would be scrapped like many other A4s & A3s :`(

  • @MegaPacMan1000

Mate steam has gone from the mainline since the middle of 1968. Diesal and electrics have already taken over the railway system since then. You only see steam locos on heritage lines and the odd mainline charter. Those steam locos u mentiond cant be scrapped because there a nation icon now.

  • @MegaPacMan 1000 Stephensons rocket, Flying scotsman, and Mallard are in the national collection and thus they are legally protected. NRM (Part of NMSI) are legally obligated to keep all items in its care in a safe, cosmetic condition. NRM are not obligated to keep any (in part or in whole) loco, rolling stock, ect.. in working condition

NRM operates a policy of 'trying' to keep all items in its care in operational condition, as ppl are more likely to attend if there are working locos, ect...

  • Real men poured their souls into each and every one of those machines, breathed life into metal and fire. These machines worked as faithfully as they could, and when old and tired, they were tossed to the side, dissabled with cuts made my younger men, and left to die.

    This is sade.

  • @foughtwolf Back then, the diesel and electric trains that replaced seemed new and revolutionary, but in the end they were also hacked to bits (alongside BR itself).

So now we have the era of cheap imported plastic trains.

  • This is very sad. Good bye the age of steam. R.I.P :.(

  • it make me sad to see these wounderfull machines die i say bring the old girls back and enjoy there life i wish i had millions i would save them do not scrap them restore them

  • So.... Let us be thankful, very thankful, for the beasts that a few of the wealthy RR companies have invested millions in, to bring back to life, for PR purposes. A few insightful people have saved a part of our heritage for the generations to come. However, those insightful people did not just recently decide to get an old engine and fix it up. Engines like UP has restored, were set aside and kept in a condition where they were financially feasible to restore, at a later date. Nice video though

  • Very, very good, and the music is absoluty perfect for it. Could be a real classic, I am serious. The forlorn music is made for the footage. Grats and thanks.

  • The music in this film is an adaptation of the piano classical masterpiece by Ludwig Von Beethoven called "Adagio Moonlight Sonata".

  • @donyadna The music in this film is an adaptation of the piano classical masterpiece by Ludwig Von Beethoven called "Adagio Moonlight Sonata".

  • What's the song? I've heard it before BUT I'd love to know what it is.

  • this is sad seeing very good engine just rust

  • where is that at

  • Does anyone know what the locomotive pictured at 2.09 is or was? I would be very interested to know, thank you.

  • @SAINT9991 ,

The is the American Version of the "mullet" UP has one remaining on display at the Sacramento Rail Museum in California if you want to see one in all it glory. This were the Cab-Forward design experiment. Due to a pretty bad Derailment. Production was modified .

  • Why would they be cruel to let these steem engines rot in this place?

  • what version of Beethoven moonlight sanatra is this? i like it!

  • @fintogive "Sonata" you oaf!

You are getting confused with Frank of the same name!

  • @Stormtrooper1488 well do you know then?

  • @fintogive Very difficult to tell, you'll probably have to PM the video maker or check on the You Tube lists of standard background musics or maybe search Moonlight sonata remix on google or at abmp3 till you find something similar.

All I can tell is it's an orchestral version with a heavy oboe part which may be of some use in searching.

  • @Stormtrooper1488 ah ok i try that. thanks

  • sad

  • What is written on the locomotive at :56?

Music sucks. (Write your own rather than ruin Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.)

Hope good examples of these locomotives were preserved.

Best to recycle and not take up valuable space with rusting relics.

  • wow. im glad that in america here, there are2 or 3 running steam engines. and the rest are deisels. its so depressing. and the famous engine the milwaukee road 261 was brought back to life. it was cool. but im sad that the bigest engine in the world was in the usa was scrapped. it was a bigboy #4008. it is a 4-8-8-4. huge engine.

  • @123legodude There is still a Big Boy in existance at Steamtown national Park in Scranton,Pa. Its not in running condition but has had some cosmetics done(not rusting away).

  • 1:22 The Duke of Gloucster, Look where it is now XD

Running on the freaking mainline :D

  • if steam had survived into the mid/late 70s as thought when they made the standard class's I wonder what they would had looked like in British rail blue and complete yellow front and backs. doesn't bare thinking about. mind you if this had, had happened at least maybe a few more would had survived. great vid ' but very sad.

  • There are some unbelievably stupid comments responding to this very good video. Worse that the Holocaust!!? Get a life, and until then, get OFF line: you are just too offensive.

Beat the "oner"s teeth? Grow up you silly little boy, gain some manners and do some reading. The late Dai Woodham was the "owner" as we say in English; one of the hundreds of surviving locomotives is named after him now in recognition of his contribution to preservation of so much heritage.

  • if you see the oner beat the his teeth out of him!!!!

  • Ironically, steam will probably outlive diesel. Diesels are still going strong but have little hope of surviving the rising fuel prices and electrification.

  • i will be honest, this disturbes me more then pictures of those from the holocost..

  • Comment removed

  • it is horrible that is our history they are a lot better than a diesel

  • I think you mean Long Marston railway

  • Brings a tear to your eye :(

  • 2:09 what is the name of this train model ?

  • we must avenge those steam engines! we will regain our lost and beloved steam engines!we must make them be operational! we will get revenge!

  • this is just sad!!!!!!!!!!!!;(....

Why did they get rid of those poor steam engines? Why didnt they just give them away?;(

  • they served us faithully for at least over 20 years but they were lft to rust.

what did they ever do to us?

  • @loghead19 killed people hit small childern

  • @cber8860 :L

  • DAMN YOU BEECHING!!!

  • I'm so sad when I watching this. I like steam locomotive. Only steam locomotives are locomotives, all others locomotives are toys.

  • you are so right steamers are stronger than todays toys an way please be my friend i want to cry watching this you are so right

  • Wow I hate and love scrap yards

  • at 1:20 its sad 2 see the duke like that. so glad its back in steam

  • A very moving work, dear cookhammanor ! When I saw your photos taken at Barry scrapyard, I thought back to the last seventies and the first eighties when I remember the long rows of the last Italian steam locos waiting for scrapping. The music you choose is very moving too and it blends perfectly with photos. And sure you will be happy to see that most of locos, you saw so rusted and abandoned many years ago, are now again in steam or restored !

  • Jeanniedee, how did you know about this underground ordnance factory housing all these steam locos? first ive ever heard of this, do you think theres any chance of looking at these loco"s that are hidden?

  • @clissward, there just myth stroys but i do wish there was a few still locked away for us younger lot to have a play with

  • @clissward this rumor was based round the western region, a rumor came up in an old hill side weapons storage depo, a rumor came up about a huge amount of redundant engines scuddled away in this hill side, just in case the world was plunged into lack of fuel... but it was later to find there was no locomotives there sadly

  • @trainlover657 I haven't heard about this for years! My late Great Uncle who worked on British Railways used to tell me this same story when I was a kid in the '70's - although he said it was down near Southampton....

  • @clissward The story im thinking of was the supposed hiding of the GWR Grange class somewhere in case the world ran out of oil.

  • @clissward

Very, very good, and the music is absoluty perfect for it. Could be a real classic, I am serious. The forlorn music is made for the footage. Grats and thanks.

  • @Colormepearl

What many people do not understand about the steam locomotive, is that they started to beat themselves to death, the moment they were released from the manufacturer. The maintenance on these engines was astronomical. The cost to bring one of these beasts back to life, depending on the deterioration, and, most of all, the condition of the boiler, would break most of the wealthiest people in this country. I'm afraid that they are like many things, only a symbol now of a simpler time

  • DEAN an old major wartime underground ordinance factory, has miles of rail laid tunnels . locos are now bricked up in there , most locos had just come out of repair shops or been overhauled at Eastleigh work, and were sent there direct . Remember at the time world war 3 was still a threat , no diesel fuel or electric (power stations destroyed) coal still plentiful . This was the answer to. recent snow chaos ,we need these locos again !!

  • Check which locos are listed as scrapped and weather the ever made it to scrapyard from eastleigh to barry . many dissapeared on route that (DEAN) is where they went !!

  • In secret war department tunnels under the hills at Dean near Salisbury are hundreds of steam locos kept for national emergency. time they were released !!

  • I don't get why so many people hate on diesels and such.

Steam engines are wonderful things but they require so much more effort to maintain not to mention infrastructure.

You can't just stop and go off at the end of the day with a steam engine. It's fire needs dropping, it needs oiling and it's firebox needs to be cleaned (which is no easy or pleasent task)

A diesel just needs to be filled up. At the night you can just switch off and go home, plus the effort of driving it is much less.

  • As much as I agree with you theredraven, it isnt right to put them in a scrap yard like that either. I can understand when there broken down and unrepairable but if they were in classic condition, at least put them in a musium.

  • But to do that you need to have money, a place for them to go and then have the ability to restore them to working order.

Plus, when you have several thousand, how do you decide? You will obviously keep the most important ones like Mallard and such but then what? Do you keep the unsuccessful Clan class or do you scrap them? Do you keep humble tank engines or might LMS Garrets?

  • all of these engines should be restored, it is a crime that they will rust and no one will see these pieces of art. scrap is not an option, steamies are and always were better than diesels, f__k you I (my bro) loves trains and they should just use steamers.plus, they are faster and stronger. steam engines for ever!

  • The railway speed record in this country is held by the APT tilting train.

    A diesel.

    I win the argument.

  • Agreed, im not against u at all, i agree with everything you said but if it wasnt for steam trains, I bet ya any amount of money there wouldnt be deisel. Just saying.

  • Actually the very first diesel engines came about at the start of the 20th century.

Plus, the electric powered locomotives which were around even at the end of the 19th century. So even before the glory days of the 20th century, steam had a rival.

  • damn, British Railways is even more cruel than the Railway Series let on. :(

  • :'( this is sooo sad dont know how they could of done this

  • this is sad. someone should restore these engines. my dream is to see steam running on the rails again someday. why can't team and desiel coexist? especially since a lot of steam engines were more powerful than todays desiel engines.

  • Yes because the Class 225 doing the Kings Cross to Edinburgh route faster than Flying Scotsman ever did means somehow steam is more powerful.

If you want to watch steam trains, book to travel on a steam special or go to a preserved line.

  • @theredraven

i never said they were faster, just some are more powerful. like the big boy and challenger of the UP railroad? let them coexist. lol

  • your right the heaveyest laod ever was pulled by a steam train

  • @kirbyfan600

ya wasn't it the UP Challenger #3985 too? like a 143 car double stack by itself? i can't think of a diesel that can do that (besides the DDA40X of course) and i'm not too sure about that. let them coexist. lol

  • it would take like 3 diesels to pull it

  • @ModalTrains4884

You are awesome! high five, you are so right! i feel like sewing someone- even the president or government!- because the lack of engines!

    keep it up! - Froggyman144

  • tell the uk gov to get theys trains runing

  • Stunning and beautiful.

    Thankyou,

Rob (who used to haunt scrapyards in 1964-69 in NZ many beautiful engines cut up)

  • Too many 9F's NOOOOOO!!!

  • steam fans should come together and preserve them i mean they have enough steam locos their to replace diesels completely.

  • Why would you want to replace stuff that's cheaper and faster?

Not to mention that steam engines require more infrastructure. A diesel needs a shed and a tank of diesel to fill up. A steam engine needs a water tower, coaling tower, turntable and a shed, plus requires much more effort to maintain. BR didn't even bother to clean them at the end because it took too long.

  • @theredraven well steam does not break down every 2 weeks like diesels

  • It doesn't do London to Scotland in 3 hours either like Diesels do.

  • @theredraven well more steam engines were made than diesels

  • Germany had more soldiers than Britain. Your point is?

  • @theredraven well steam will be king always

  • China got rid of it's last full time steam engines a few years ago.

Now it's all diesel and electric. I'm sure that's for the better. Steam engines should be preserved and kept to hauling specials for railfans.

  • @theredraven well at least steam can pull more freight than diesels. Something that would take 4 diesels will only take two steam engines

  • @mmikeironhorse Whenever I see a long coal hopper train or a long container train there is only ever one diesel (usually a class 66) pulling it.

You're thinking of super long trains in the US. You'd probably need more than two steam engines for that, not to mention the effort involved. A steam engines power is often determining by the size of its wheels. A diesel however, doesn't need giant wheels. It can haul heavy loads without much slippage on a set of much smaller wheels.

  • @theredraven what ever well at least steam looks cooler

  • @mmikeironhorse I'm sure the people running the railways don't care how cool something looks as long as it can pull a train, get somewhere on time and safely.

  • @theredraven

wait were talking about british railways? lol. i thought we were talking about american for a second. well in that case american steam engines were a lot more powerful than others. A UP Challenger #3985 once pulled a 143 car long double stack train all by itself. that normally does take like 6 diesels.

  • T_T

  • everyone has such a negative opinion of Barry, but very few engines actually were scrapped there. Woodham realised rolling stock was much better to sell as scrap and put the engines up for sale. If he didn't do that, more than half of the engines we see on todays preserved railways would not be with us. Barry actually helped the preservation movement. i know its depressing to see them there in such a state of disrepair, but most of them are safe now.

  • Steamers should still rule the rails, not bloody diesels. They don't deserve this. I think steamers are & were more reliable than diesels.

  • Great video, what's the title of the piano piece?

  • Great video, nice job. This would be an interesting place to visit, the resting place of these awesome machines, so much history.

  • THOMAS MURDOK

  • Well, all safe aprt from the ones that the Great Western crowd have decided they can kit bash.

  • why cant thes be disils insted of steam engins?!?! oh the humanity! who even invented the disile eneay?!

  • Rudolph Diesel (yes, it was a German)

  • it doesnt matter how sad or horrific the locos look in this film because in reality they are all safe and many have been restored including the mission impossibles (71000 and 61264) but for Mr woodham the story could have been a completely different one.

  • My Grandad Bought a GWR Hall Class for £19.000, hes doing it up, it doesn't need a lot doing to really,

  • Poor old Cockroach2008, he will never understand passion. Like a broken mirror, Satan has taken his soul.

  • Just ignore him, his doing this on a lot of videos like this, trying to wind us all up..... I think its working for some of us! lol

  • What was his statement? I cant read it, since it is blocked.

  • Cant remember Dirtastegood but you can be sure it was a load of negative bollocks..

  • You should cheer whenever you see one with 'sold' on it. That's another survivor.

  • Quel gâchis.

    Lamentable.

    Vive le gaspillage.

  • Think cockroach is a twat so he will meet his maker like the locos .

  • How much would one of these engines cost just to have in possession?

  • hundred-thousands, maybe millions depending on the model, of dollars. If I were rich, I'd buy an engine and make a contribute, even if I live in the US.

  • about £3000 would have bought you a large tender loco in the late 1960's

  • Rules of supply and demand. Lots of engines for sale, few people brave (or foolish) enough to buy them.

  • 3:32 Is that an LMS Ivatt 05?

  • The Steam Locomotive shall live FOREVER!

  • wanker

  • @Cockroach2008 go away

  • 1:39 That engine looks like she could give several more decades with just a little bit of repair.

This whole movie brought tears to my eyes. =(

    Great job though.5*****

  • Cheers mate.

  • @ludwigviper4468 i was crying

  • WoW

  • STEAM WILL NEVER DIE !!!

  • Steam should come-back, now that petroleum is so expensive. Diesels are dependent on petroleum products to run, while steam engines are not. The only petroleum product steam engines use is oil to lubricate moving parts (which most heavy machinery requires anyway). Steam engines can run on any heat source capable of boiling water and generating enough steam. Coal is cheaper than petroleum, which can ease steam back-into service until a new heat source is developed.

  • let me gess ur a modern deisel fan with all the fuckin shitty computers in that break down every 5 seconds and wudnt appreciate how steam engines are better and more reliable
