Sting was created in the forges of Gondolin (ancient Elven stronghold), along with Orcrist (Theoden's blade) and Glamdring (Gandalf's sword). At the time, the elves were defending against Morgoth, Sauron's original master. Morgoth commanded hordes of goblins, orcs, trolls and spiders. Enchantments were placed on the elvish blades to make them the bane of Morgoth's minions. This made Sting an ideal weapon when Frodo faced Shelob, the queen spider of the Morgul pass.
Sting actually has a very cool story behind it. It was made in the forges of Gondolin, bastion of the old Elves. It, along with other Elvish blades back then, were constructed with the solo purpose of being the bane of the minions of Morgoth, Sauron's original master. These minions included goblins, orcs and spiders. When the spiders in Mirkwood (in The Hobbit) and Shelob the giant spider (from Twin Towers) saw Sting, they instinctively felt the sword was their deaths... a fell blade to them.
@Tanson32 wow, im impressed. and i thought i belonged on a LOTR game show. you sure answerd several questions i had. we should get togather and have a LOTR party. he, he.
@transtat74 bilbo and his companions found it in the trolls' cave (the trolls that bilbo describes to the hobbit children at his b-day party in fellowship) they found it with Glamdring (Gandalf's sword) and Orcrist (Thorin Oakenshield's sword) and all three glow blue when orcs are near. so Gandalf's sword should glow in the movies. Thorin Oakenshield is one of the 13 dwarves that Bilbo goes on his journey with in The Hobbit.
lord of the rings and hobbit are the same thing and if you actually watch or read the lord of the rings bilbo has a book here and back again which is the hobbit
ha lol, me to, i am buying one of these fx sting swords on eBay in a couple of days and also the museum edition of sting and a sting scabbard and i already have king theodens sword
it was found in the trolls den by bilbo and he named it sting after slaying the spiders. it was made by the elvs. ya dude i love lord of the rings its like my life
@reallyrandomdude23 You have to consider the size of Hobbits, for a Hobbit it would be a sword but, for a full grown man or elf, it would be a dagger or knife.
on the sword it ses sting is my name im the spiders bane

You should read the hobbit. way better than the lord of the rings. and sting was more notably used for killing spiders in mirkwood forest.
