I live in Beckley and I travel that mtn for years to see my folks in Man. My Dad drove the road just below for 23 yrs going to work over towards Wharton, on the way to Madison. I have always wanted to go up to the tower but never knew what road to take or if it's open to the public..
Ivy Knob is 3620 feet high. I live near the base of it between Fairdale & Bolt, WV. I can see it from where I live by going out back of my woods. A cousin of ours took my dad and myself in 1965 I believe to the fire tower. Rt.99 was still not completed yet. We went up Drews Creek hollow of the Peachtree getting to it. This was the road many took to work in the coal mines at Kopperston in Wyoming county. The mud was so thick my cousin had to put chains on the front of his 1965 Chevy powerwagon.
There isn't a fence around it, but there's about a 1/4 of a mile hike up to the top. The tower hasn't been used in a while. I'm surprised it hasn't been torn down yet. It has been there since the 30's, I believe. The view of the fire tower has been ruined by the giant cell tower next to it. This area looked much nicer when I was younger.
wow, i can't believe we both went to the top when we were younger. it looks different now that the little house is gone, not to mention the new cell tower.
Yeah same thing happened to me when I tried sending you an email! Glad you like the video. It's quite a hike up there... and steep. It was about 5 degrees, way below zero with the wind chill (very, very windy way up there). Well worth the trip, but definately not safe to try and climb the tower anymore. Boards and steps are broken or missing.
Great vid! Really puts things in perspective! A coal truck hit a black bear near there this past year, maybe she heard one of his cousins. Thanks for sharing!!!

Nice Video. I guess there is no fence? Is the Fire tower still used? WV is a Great State to see.

I know, it looks a little different now. I don't think I could go to the top now. The older I get, the more heights bother me!

Oops, lol, thought it didn't take the first time.
