You're all SO right! OUATIA really is one of the greatest, most moving, most astonishing, films ever made. Magnificent acting, profound and tragic story, exquisite, most perfect musical score.
Did you know that the Director (Leone) and the Composer (Morricone) went to school together? They knew each other as kids! That tells you a lot.
It is Number One on my list of the world's greatest films. (And the Hollywood moguls hated it.)
No film has ever moved me s deeply as this. A true Masterpiece.
fav film of all time, along with once upon a time in the west and fistful of dynamite, the soundtracks are amazing, and they always bring a rear to my eyes no matter where i am,even got the soundtrack on cd for the car, proper love it,cant stop playin it.
thers a reason why Il Volo took the melody of this song for "E piu Ti Penso" Ennio Morricone is just an amazing Composer... this is truly beautiful and the Film is too..
The best movie of the 20s centry. I have seen this movie back in 80s. Today generation would never ever understand this movie. Everyone or anybody who wants to know what really is life is all about, once upon a time in america is the answer. I am so happy that I was a part of generation of 70s and 80s. It was a such great time.
Almost all of the greatness in this world is constantly beeing created by men. Women are constantly staring at men like hopeless childs not able to fully understand the imaginary emotions. Yet everything is created for them without them ever realising the amount of truth that is beeing enclosed in these feelings. And still, all broken hearts in this world are due to women's feebleness. Their inner denial to exist equal to men which prevents them from loving them equally true.
Tears pouring down your cheeks, that soundtrack, the story and the acting over 3 hours of sheer brilliant cinema. A masterpiece and it does make you relate to your own life. Love and betrayal you really feel for these people and spanning several decades its even more emotional. But that score has anyone ever written something so beautiful for a film. Ennio Morricone brought something special to this film and it would be very hollow without his magic. Sergio and Ennio I love you
I love this film, it always keeps me enthralled right through. The acting is superb and the music makes my hair stand on end. I agree with a previous comment that it hurts the soul.
@WarThug13 If you loved this then you really ought to watch Once Upon a Time in the West (also by Sergio Leone). That is possibly my all time favorite film.
@ThePhrozenPhoenix yeah I've seen it, along with most other of leone's films, I didnt like it much at all, it had some nice moments, but overall I cant say I liked it
@WarThug13 figlio di puttana sono italiano questo è stato il piu' gran bel film della storia del cinema italiano noi abbiamo fatto l'america gli italiani emigrati... americano di merda figlio di puttana...
Doesn't this particular scene integrate you so much that you become the young Noodles. Each time I see this movie I relive my youth through the eyes of DeNiro as he captures his past through a missed opportunity. We have all been there - we really don't appreciate the things we lost - inspite of never really having them. Morricone's brilliance enriches us all with solemnity and imagination - a true genius!
This is not just a movie, this work of art, after seeing it hurts the soul, probably because the music in conjunction with the arts and to affect our soul and it is very rare in world cinema
Agreed, it takes its place amongst the greatest. It makes demands of the audience in that you have to be ready to receive it. It took me two times to appreciate its brilliance. The same happened for the Deer Hunter. Both films are slow burns but reward the patient. Outstanding, outstanding.
I accidently kicked off two versions of Deborah's Theme (this one and varadero1839) within a couple of seconds of each other and the outcome was unbelievable. I got real lucky with how they harmonised... but in my opinion I think it brought something different to a very beautiful piece of music. Right up there with Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings
The scenes are intended o convey the complexity of noodles character. In the real world many things are not entirely black or white. Sometimes good people do bad things and sometimes bad people do something good. Life is greyer than we assume.
This movie has one weakness - the sex scenes!!! This movie had so much going for it including: Ennio Morricone's music, Sergio Leone's directing, actors like Robert De Niro. Violence, not a problem. Scene Rambo 4 and other such epic movies. But the sex, please! I have no idea what Leone was thinking. That's what made his westerns awesome. He made Clint Eastwood mysterious instead of adding grotesque scenes. But, the music is great. Well done Ennio!
Does everyone know Leone did a cameo in one scene of this classic, portraying the ticket agent? I like to watch this movie for the beautiful score. The Director's Cut is longer and much better.
@xaxie1 That's funny you say that. The story makes sense to me, but I found how the film progressed was terrible. Teen prostitution, two rape scenes that go on and on and on, an elongated scene of a kid eating a desert with blaring music, etc. Leone should've kept his focus on just the story; not gratitutous sex and violence; and I've seen my fair share of violent movies--this is up there. I also could not stand Elizabeth McGovern, such a horrible actress. I love Sergio, but his westerns are god
While I kind of agree with what you said about the actress, I disagree with the notion that the films progression is 'terrible'. Yes it is violent and at time sexually violent, but all of these factors do indeed focus on the story and add to the narrative.
The scene where a young Patsy eats a desert with 'blaring music' is SO important. Either way I'm glad you liked it, one of my all time favorite films
@xaxie1 I agree with you. When I purchased the DVD and saw the deleted rape scene, at first I was horrified because it made me violently HATE Noodles when I so loved his character before I knew the extent of how he hurt the only woman he loved. Then later, I watched it again and fell in love with him all over. I just felt tragic in how you can love AND hate someone at the same time.
movies like this are constantly reminding you that Cinema truly is The Seventh Art and in my opinion the best one of all 7. A good production ,and by good I mean well directed, well played and an amazing soundtrack, can transmit very strong emotions in a very unique and powerful way.
does anyone think that maybe the cinema and film in general is just the logical evolution of 75000 years of culture into the most amazing form of art?

@Raoh you can believe what you want to believe. I'd like to think he did because I dont want the movie to be a dream. Leone is dead so we will probably never know.
This made me cry because this movie is essentially about the dreams of children, something we all have growing up. What became of that dream, whether it was ever achieved, whether it was achieved and not what we expected, or whether it was achieved immorally, we remain ourselves best critic. What is beautiful is the journey, and for me personally, that journey coincides that with Noodles, for I am not the man I wanted to be but I too get old.

@Fzed89 It amazes me when people try to associate themselves with others based on nationality, color, or race.. You're just another one of 6 billion, he was not. Until you distinguish yourself accordingly, don't diverge his greatness onto you, he's the source, you're a mere self-perceived reflection.
When asked what movie and score I would be perusing, if only one and once, this is what I would select. The movie, and this theme reinforcing it, present one with the maximum levels of love and tenderness; also with horrendous samples of violence and rape. As in describing the human race...
I am 17 now and I also like the great blockbusters of todays time, but after watching this great movie with it's great score I learned more about making good films. Leone is a master of moviemaking and Morricone a master of composing! Wonderful movie!!
God, I remember the scene with this beautiful piece of work playing when young Deborah wouldn't let young Noodles into her restaurant after he just got the shit kicked out of him by Bugsy. Noodles tells Deborah to open the door, but she just stands there, completely heartbroken. Amazing acting by Jennifer Connelly. Its like she knows she can't love Noodles because he is so dedicated to his friends.
I was 18 when I saw this... and precisely that scene is the one that stayed with me, joy and bitter loss, went on *haunting* me (...and made me fall in love with Jennifer Connelly for the rest of my life ;-) ...I remember I was so delighted when I saw her in "The $treet", a dark humored show about traders on FOX that got cancelled after 11 episodes... Never made it onto DVD of course. It can be looked up on imdb, careful to spell $treet with the dollar symbol!)
This is probably one of the most beautiful movie themes of all times. It's amazing that Mr. Morricone can evoke such emotion and passion all within major key. What a gifted writer. I get choked up every time I hear this beautiful piece of music.
im love old school and underground rap, indie bands, i LOVE classical music. I love ennio morricone his music always inspires me and makes my mind explore the corners of my imagination. i drive around and i blast hardcore hip hop but i do as well, and nobody knows of this, have a cd thats all just ennio morricone. and ive got it stashed in my glove compartment hidden with no label on it. and when the time is right and im alone i put that cd in on a late night drive home.
This music is very moving and yet very beautiful at the same time. Whenever I hear it, I'm reminded of the scene from the film in Grand Central Station where Deborah departs on the train leaving Noodles on the platform. All of the music that accompanies this film is just incredible.
6 people do not like this.I love all types of music and cannot believe someone would go out of their way to post a negative comment,Morricone BRILLIANT.!!!!!!!!
I saw this movie for the first time when i was like 15 (15 years ago). I woke up in the middle of the night and this movie was playing on a movie channel. I saw Robert De Niro so i thought this was gonna be a good movie but what really kept me watching was the MUSIC. This movie has some of the best music ever composed. Great movie!!! Great music!!!
a modern classic from a classically modern composer ....what can a down to earth person say about an out of this world composer..god bless morricone..and if there is a god i would like to think that he has morricone by his side helping him compose tunes that are fit for heaven itself...
@derrenvictorbrown The movie soundtrack by Ennio Morricone was my first attraction.. but I also found the movie to be a draw...Robert De Niro was a an immediate draw as an a class A actor ...Loved this film
Listen to the theme from Once Upon A Time in the West, directed by Sergio Leone as well with music by Ennio Morricone. The music has the same haunting quality and I can't hear one without thinking immediately of the other film. Two Cinematic Masterpieces that bookend a fabulous carerr.
This is without a doubt, THE BEST movie made. All Star Cast, and Excellent Story Line.. its worth watching 25+ plus and its only 4hrs 52 minutes long..lol...
@storm43701 I could really say that too, if one day appears a list of the best movies of all time (not only from the US or Europe but in the whole world) and this one appears in the first position, I wouldn't say something against it. I know it'd be arbitrary cause I haven't seen all movies (nobody), but this movie is just amazing. There nothing left to say. Mr. Leone: Bravo, Bravísimo!!!
If I had a wedding this song would be played.

@thelupoistheman1

Great music!!!

en el fondo, detras de esta musica esta ese sentimiento grandioso llamado amor.

a modern classic from a classically modern composer ....what can a down to earth person say about an out of this world composer..god bless morricone..and if there is a god i would like to think that he has morricone by his side helping him compose tunes that are fit for heaven itself...

Listen to the theme from Once Upon A Time in the West, directed by Sergio Leone as well with music by Ennio Morricone. The music has the same haunting quality and I can't hear one without thinking immediately of the other film. Two Cinematic Masterpieces that bookend a fabulous carerr.
