  • an opening snap occurs faster than an s3 sound.. s3 is generally louder...

  • What about S1 split? how normal is it to hear that? I was told that my heart sounded normal, but I didn't ask if she heard an S1 split, which I've read is pretty normal

  • It can be difficult differentiating between S3 and opening span (of mitral valve in mitral stenosis). Both are best heard in the apex/mitral area. However, S3 is best heard using the bell of the stethoscope while an opening snap is best heard with the diaphragm. Also, S3 is low-pitched while an opening snap is high-pitched.
