Actually, some Filipinos like myself feel that "Pacific Islander" is a very subtle way of othering specific Asian ethinciities. It is like we do not belong to a continent, and are relegated to a non-space, and this relagation to a non-space is another colonial trophe of "Negative Space" to disable the ability of people to trace their roots, or have a sense of roots to a larger globalized community.
At least, that's how a fraction of us Filipinos feel about that designation.
As for me, my comments about this subject have always been NEUTRAL about God and religion. Being agnostic is rare in the Philippines. Or maybe..there are more Filipinos who are just as agnostic as I am. Who knows?

There are Filipinos with Spanish ancestry. Their accents are also slightly similar because SOME words in Tagalog are derived from Spanish. Such as:

Actually, some Filipinos like myself feel that "Pacific Islander" is a very subtle way of othering specific Asian ethinciities. It is like we do not belong to a continent, and are relegated to a non-space, and this relagation to a non-space is another colonial trophe of "Negative Space" to disable the ability of people to trace their roots, or have a sense of roots to a larger globalized community.
At least, that's how a fraction of us Filipinos feel about that designation.

There are Filipinos with Spanish ancestry. Their accents are also slightly similar because SOME words in Tagalog are derived from Spanish. Such as:

Pacific Islander my ass! I'm a Filipino and have never heard of such a term. What the hell is wrong w/ this lady? I think her Filipino friends thought it was funny to tell her that and she obviously took it seriously. HAHA. But yeah, most of us have mixed race in our blood. Because we were colonized by Spain for 300 yrs, by Japs and by Americans. And there is a big chinese community here too. So that explains it. Peace.
