Oh, and 'barato' is not Visayan, it is Spanish adjective meaning cheap. Remember, there are 72 dialects in the Philippines? and most of them 'absorbed' the Spanish influence like 'mesa', 'silya', 'puerta', 'cubiertos' and even our kumusta which is 'como esta'..I am from Toronto & Pinoy/Canadian also...

Just an addition to what I've said here. I am Visayan actually from Leyte (town Merida) but, my dialect is Cebuano and some of our words are based in Spanish. I am 1/8% Spanish (my grandparents on both sides are half-Spanish) mixed with Chinese and Filipino, etc.

Addendum : LOL, I know first hand that "BARATO" is use in some Visayan provinces to describe a CHEAP item cuz my parants are from the island of PANAY and my Ilongo fiends from Negros uses BARATO also. Philippines had the Galleon Trade with Spain after Ferdinand Magellan "discovered" the Philippines on March 16,1521. Speaking of Filipino talent, David Foster was in Calgary last year for the same fundraising,(bout $10,000 per round table, Sponsors only) and he held a singing contest to pick a male and a female winner. The female winner was half Filipino and half Polish, I think.
