i just ran an overhead on a e7 400 in a snow plow what a pain in the ass i like the top drop rear ends and maxdyne trans but mack engines are a bitch to work on AND RETARDS its a diesel if you got oil pressure REV the shit out of you wont hurt it if is cold
My dad had a 77 U model he used to haul piggyback and containers with in the late 80's here in Chicago. The cool thing about that nasty old truck is it had an air starter on it also.We used to love scaring the shit out of people with it.
I was on a hike yesterday and came across a single axle R-Series salt truck. It had all three knobs and a Fuller 4 x 4 transmission. I just find that weird because that is pretty heavy duty setup for a relatively small truck.
Hi, can anyone help me figure out a Mack. I work for a recovery company in the north of england and we have just got a 1977 Mack. It was imported from Australia so it's a right hand drive. So far as I can see from driving it a few miles is that it has a 4 spd box with a splitter (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 etc) But it also has a 2nd stick much smaller than the main. I'm sure it's running too slow, max is about 40mph but my boss insists the 2nd stick is for the winches on the back, I'm not so sure?
Does the splitter have spot for low, direct , neutral and reverse? If it does it might be an old 12 speed mack tranny, some had a second stick for granny low and some had a switch on the dash to put into low. If it is the 12 speed the second stick will only have 2 positions, low or go, I've seen guys cut them down low because they never use the second stick. Not sure if i'm right , its been a long time since I drove one of them.
Yeah, the spitter has those 4 positions but still the stick only has 4 positions, so even in 4th high it's only getting about 45mph. maybe thats right but it just seems desperatley high revving to reach it. by what your saying I'm guessing the 2nd stick MUST be in the right position or it'd be maxing out at about 20mph?! Thinking of contacting a mack dealer with the chassis number to see if I can get more info, without even the model type no one can really help me! Too many types out there!!
@brian93ist LOL. You are a dumbass. anybody who knows diesels first doesnt just turn the key like he did, and you never step on the accelerator on a diesel when its that cold. Especially that big of an engine. The engine will idle itself up or there is a knob to idle it up. But you sir, are an imbecile and obviously drive a prius.
When you don't own a bolt in 'er you can afford to drive it like it's stolen.

The last Mack I dealt with that had the second stck set up was a 1978 and the second stick had LOW, HIGH, and REVERSE.

what does the blue knob do? I have driven a tractor before and know that yellow is tractor brakes, and red is trailer, but never seen the blue.
Cumminsturbo205 2 years ago
The blue knob is tractor parking brakes only.
Yellow is tractor and trailer brakes.
Red is trailer air supply.

Check with the dealer, but if it was not a highway truck it may just have very low geared rears. Good luck.

s172mch 3 years ago
Its an air brake for one of the axles the yellow one is for the other. The red one is for the trailer. Newer trucks only have the yellow and red.
ideot411 3 years ago
It is the parking brake for the tractor only. The yellow one sets both the tractor and the trailer brakes.
jd450lh 2 years ago
its the Tractor brakes. the yellow is all parking brakes, and red is trailer. the red usually comes on when you pull the yellow.
