huntergatherers is correct. But you are certainly not alone in thinking that. Donny Hathaway had a popular hit with this song, and every time someone sings it on American Idol they call it a Donny Hathaway song, but Leon Russell wrote the song and was the first to record it. (Heck, even The Carpenters recorded it!) My version is based on Leon's version. I encourage you to "Google" it or "iTunes" it, or "YouTube" it or whatever. It's a true classic.
