Good footwork, good speed. Don't underestimate the usefulness of the straight punch, as it counts for points. Snap it hard though. Follow up after you kick. Keep coming. Follow that roundhouse up with a good belt shaker. Mix it up a little as well, back kick, axe kick, inside and outside crescent kicks. One of my instructors has taught me how useful a quick pop sidekick is in jamming your opponent's roundhouse. Keep at it!!
I think you did ok. It looked like you were a little tired by the last guy. By the time you were sparring him, you didn't throw that many multi kick combo's, you would just throw one and then he would throw one (and repeat). It sucks competing with an injury. That can ruin your confidence in a heart beat.
It's just that this is more sport-based...as in, there are rules, so yes, when you see something like this and ask if it would work in the "real world" you are really asking a pretty stupid question...because it's not MEANT to work in the real world. As anyone who practices martial arts for practical self defense knows, you don't move around with your hands at your sides and expect to last long in a real situation. Appreciate it for what it is, not what you think it should be.
Man punching is so overrated, and so is keeping your hands up. >.>
Back when I used to do TKD, if you ever did a flying kick at all during a sparring match, my instructor would just say, "What are you, a fricken Fairy?" I loled so hard when he said that to a new guy who came from a different TKD school, he was like "Whaaa" Haha, I miss my instructor, to bad he came back from Iraq and is now recovering from PTSD, and sold his school to some wushu BSer.
Ha ha thats funny, Without a high guard and the ability to punch you lose teeth. Why buy a car with only two wheels and then challenge people to a race?
This is my problem with WTF...this is a black belt Dan test right? So, why test the efficacy of the Martial Art TKD by using the sports application as a demonstration of acquired skills? No punching, no takedowns, no locks/restraints...these are all part of the ITF 3rd Dan test. so why not here?
I'm not down on the WTF per se, i just think its totally unrealistic in a real life or death situation.
Is there no takedowns or no punching? I just ask because I saw SO MANY opportunities for when one guy kicked, the other could have easily laid a fast across his face or any other target. Not to mention catching the leg and taking them down putting them in a controlling maneuver such as a standing ankle lock.
nope, in WTF (world taekwondo federation) style tkd, grabing or take downs are illegal. punches to the face/head are also illegal. though punches to the body are acceptable, they r rather pointless. it is practicaly 100% kicking...and it ROCKS!!! :-)
I think his footwork is standard and pretty good, the "lousy" sparring, however, could be because he has been through a really exhaustive test, and no more energy for sparring. I witnessed that in my dojang for a highly skilled guy testing for his 2nd dan. His sparring sucked at the end, but quite understandable!
Im sorry but tae kwon do sucks, its not even a style is a god damn sport, I reckon you go learn something. A black belt tae kwon do practitioner means NOTHING.
I respectfully beg to differ. Though the Taekwondo seen is sporty the type i train in is not. Just as you may think wu-shu is far too flashy chinese martial art to be of any use i believe the no punching types are ridiculous. I also think that just because a person makes a coment that upsets you gives you no right to down an entire Martial art. Also Kung Fu means excelence or achieving greatness in something not chinese martial arts us Americans messed it up. This coming from a taekwndo red belt
I say kung fu on youtube because alot of people would be like
WTF IS CHUAN FA?!
And no, I matured a bit since my comments, people can do what they want and have there own style.. I should not have been immature and slanderd someones art. But anyways, congrats ony our rank.. Im only a yellow belt :P
(right after white)
But i am teaching kids class... im the first yellow belt to do that :D
actually neither suck. all martial arts r unique. as for tkd being a sport, ITF (international taekwondo federation) style isn't. it is based off of the traditional style of tkd. WTF (world taekwondo federation) style (the style i do) IS considered to be more sport than art. but it still qualifies as a martial art.
and i actually love kung fu. wushu especially because Jet Li (my idol) does it :-)
Overall, pretty good kicking. Has it been pointed out to you to use your hands? At least for blocking - might save some of you some bloody lips. After all, it is Tae KWON Do. Also, please learn some flag protocol - hang the US flag on the left unless you're training in Korea.
I love full range sparring better. I also take tae Kwon do . I'm a green belt currently. I sprain my big toe knuckle in "light' sparring. been sore for 3 weeeks!!
no skill..
