@KrisaurusFlanger i had a pair of finches that had many! babies, thats the way probably the only way to tame a finch or even any animal. baby finches are very nice and fuzzy. I had from 2 finches till about 8! a lot of finches. cool think is that they cuddle up on you when they are babies. If anyone has baby finches, id recommed to tame them as babies because they grow fast and i mean very fast. They are not like parrots that take much longer to grow like macaws.
nonskid, i like how when websites say zebra finches can NOT be tame. then you have a tame zebra finch. i think its funny, and interesting. :D Goodjob,
I'm not the only one, I have seen several videos on youtube that show other's. It's rare only because few people go to the trouble , it's not very profitable to hand raise a bird thats worth less than 20$. To often, people are into things only for the money.
Mine aren't hand fed, and when i pur my hand in the cage, the male will go crazy, but the female just hops on my hand and lets me do whatever, its pretty cool! Im trying to get her to go outside.. Any tips?
I wish I had the time to do this. I love my finches (Marv and Beaker) and they meep all the time! It totally bums me out that they bathe in their water dish and not their bath dish though -__- I can't get them out of the habit.
My finch wouldn't come near me for 5 years and now he won't go to sleep in his bucket until he's had tail pats and a neck scruff. He got tame because I used to sit right next to his cage and read a book. One day I looked up and he was near my head and watching me turn pages of the book.
Omg very cute I also use to have a female bird named inuyasha and when i use to call him he came he fallowed meh as well and then he use to climb up on meh so cute now hes dead and i miss him
Adorable! I bought my finch at the pet store. He was too old to be hand fed, but I guess he was lonely being the only bird there. I let him out and held him and then he got attached to me. He followed me everywhere, even poked his little head under my desk to look for me when I was playing hide and go seek with him. He always came to sleep in my hand. I LOVED that little bird.
In the wild the zebra finches are a very social bird, often congregating in large flocks. If alone they sometimes end up bonding with humans and end up looking at you as the flock leader. You are lucky that you got a parent raised one that tamed down. I usually don't suggest to people to try to tame one that wasn't hand fed, but because the bird came to you, you are one of the rare exceptions.
thank you , now it follows me all over the place, I can't even go to the bathroom when it's out of it's cage. Closing the door doesn't help , It discovered it can squeeze through the gap under it.
half the the time they die... because they require the right nutrition to grow and u have to watch them and feed them like a full time job. then they start depending on u there all the time... i would just wait to they grow and get naturally fed by the parents then try to hand tame them....thats my opinion..
I have never had a baby bird die, yes they require the right nutrition I use "exact" hand feeding formula, and it is a full time job, feedings every two hours at first. but hand fed birds are the most friendly.
how do you learn thehandfed babies to eat seeds??? and when they are how many days old??? i raised 2zebras from day 5 to day 40 and they died both andi think that happend cause of tha wrong weaning time.
I personally never forced the wean, what I do is cut millet into 1 or 2 inch lengths and have it always offered along with fresh water. I keep hand-feeding until it either rejects formula or the crop is full of seed and I have observed it drinking water. My hand-fed birds usually wean in the 50 to 60 day period but each bird is different and a parent raised will wean much faster. hope that helps
It takes a big commitment to hand raise birds, do not try to do it unless you totally understand what is your getting into, if you don't, it will end up bad for you and the bird. Feedings are every 2 hours around the clock, humidity, heat, nutrition and sanitation all have to be maintained at a high and consistent standard. but the reward of a well adjusted tame friendly bird are worth it.
I'm with nonskids. I have to carry my baby finches with me everywhere. If you have a job that takes you out of the house for more than a couple of hours then handfeeding is out of the question. I'm getting ready to drive a three week old zebra finch to Kansas in a car with six people. It should be interesting.
A portable brooder or in a pinch a cooler with hot water bottles will give you some more freedom but yes you have to fully commit when the decision to hand feed is made, good luck on the trip lol you will need it .
How nice of you to take care of that little thing.

@macromeat That's a great way to tame any bird. Doing activities near them teaches them that you're part of their flock.
