@Guss67T Its called 'select and link' if yours isn't there u may have just hidden the tool bar, u might be able find the same button in the 'group' menu. If not your'll have to go to the customize menu and turn on the group tool bar
Hello good tutorial, now ive made the window and linked it to the wall how do apply a material to it? I know i can select the window and get a material from my library but when i apply the material either by dragging it or using the apply to selection button it applies it to everything, panes and frame, how do u apply one material to the pane and another to the frame? Do u use a multi-sub object material or do u convert the window to an editable poly? If the latter, can i revert it back? THANKS!
@Nastypsychoboy Hi, it does say in the information about the video, 'to texture the windows, use a muti/sub object material and use ID3 for the glass and the others for the frame'
if u want the frame in different colours then just use the other ID numbers and see what effects each part (can't remember of head but think there is 4 frame ID's) (for ease of use I wouldn't recommend converting the window to a editable poly at any point unless u have to)
@mrkurtman oh yeah, dur. Cheers for the reply tho. Yea i was wondering once its converted to an editable poly how u could convert it back, so u can open the window adjust parameters etc, guess the answer is not to if u can help it. ta
@mrkurtman k i need some help about the part where ye put a different material on the glass than on the frame, what is that multi/sub? and ID3? i dont know what these things are? pls help nice vid btw
@b112938 Multi/Sub is a material type, it allows lots of different materials/bitmaps on one object. Each object you create can have a number of ID's for example for a box you could have 6 ID's one for each side and then you can assign a different material or bitmap to each of them. With the windows they have by default been assigned ID's for each section, ie the glass, the frame, the window sill etc. Do a search for material ID's and for Multi/Sub materials for other peoples tutorials on them.
@vidasnake3000 You simply make a box the size you want the hole, place it in the wall then do a boolean on it. (select wall- go to compound objects and choose boolean - press the pick operand B button and select the box and you should now have a hole. if the wall disappeared just select a different operation in the parameters section until its the way you want it)
sorry to say, but that was a fail. if you turn that in as a project you will get an f. what you want to do in make a rectangle in the area u had, from the go to material editor and create a custom material that is almost see through, add gloss to it and then attach it to the wall
@hok32012 I dont see why you think that, ok you can do it both ways but my way isnt wrong, if I did it your way any objects that need to pass through the window would probably produce rendering errors (flickering etc) either way this is just a tutorial of how to use the built in wall and window fuctions, so if you think they are a "fail" then you should take it up with Autodesk as they made the program.
i still don't get it how you made the window seeing-through... i mean you activated the "select and link" button, you pulled some dotted line and then what ?
If you pull the dotted line from the window to the wall the window will become linked to the wall, so when you open the window you will see through it rather than just seeing the wall. (this is done automatically) if it didn't work for you make sure you did actually link the window & wall and didn't get something else instead, or try adjusting the size and or the position of the window in the wall. (from what I remember the window has to be slightly wider than the wall is)
It would help if you would narrate what you are doing.
