Shockingly, the only penalty shootout England have ever won. If only they'd have been more solid at shootouts, their tournament record would be vastly superior. In all honesty it's the main difference between England and Germany in terms of results.

Not that it would have brought us any WC championships, since we lost all three we participated in, in the first 90 minutes or in 30 minutes added time. But it would have given us a few more WC finals. After Holland England always been my favourite squad, I hope they never play each other in the WC unless its the final.

I think most football fans regard the Dutch side as having been the best team in the tournament at both WC 1974 and 1978, and unlucky on both occasions. (I wouldn't say the same of 2010, though, when I felt Spain were legitimately the best side in the finals.)

I believe this is the only penalty shoot out, which England have ever won. I sure was relieved, even though I thought Spain were the better side on the day. We tend to mythologise these things, because on all the other occasions, when we lost, in fact justice was done from the penalty spot. I do wish we would practise these things properly though!
