They'd been conscripted. They had to fight or go to a concentration camp. Could've only been avoided it if working for a "Kriegswichtiger Betrieb", i.e. a company which was officially declared important for war or for production of important military or civil supplies.

The SS and even the Wehrmacht were killing civilians. Your opinion is more based on cod, because they only show the war from the heroic perspective. They'd been conscripted. They had to fight or go to a concentration camp. Could've only been avoided it if working for a "Kriegswichtiger Betrieb", i.e. a company which was officially declared important for war or for production of important military or civil supplies.
But: they were defending our nation and they knew it, so morale was high a long time, what does explain a great part of their effectiveness. Minority of them fought for NSDAP or idiot Hitler. They fought for Germany!

For example the "Dolchstoßlegende" ("Legend of the Backstabbing") which is fictional opinion of a group people after ww1, which said that the democrats and socialists (including jews by he NSDAP) are responsible for the defeat and not the army itself. Jews were also made responsible for the financial stock crash on 1929 the Hyperinflation around 1924 and for many other problems in the Weimarer Republic, like joblessness etc.

Im german and im thankfull that our country was freed from that. And proud of what germany has become since the end of ww2. Only 65 years ago almost whole germany was in ruins. And now, its one of the most peacefull, welcoming countries, hosting events like Fifa world cup in 2006. What a development.

I was told by history teacher, the Germans were treated unfairly after WWI and that set the stage for WWII. If Hitler had been assassinated his generals would have taken over and made better military decisions. God only knows how differently it might have turned out.
