R.J. Reynolds still markets "Lucky Strike" in the U.S., 'batty'. The last time Luckies stressed the words "It's Toasted" in their ad campaigns was in the fall of 1954, in print, on radio and TV, and as part of their jingle:
@no1cp I think that's intended. The light they use on him season 4 is really unforgiving and brings out wrinkles, lines and bags under the eyes. It of course works perfectly with the theme that Don's weaknesses have started to get the better of him.
today i thougt i buy a pack of cigarets for new years eve (i usually dont smoke) ... i was standing infront of the diferent brands of cigarettes and saw the lucky strik ones ... :D i took them and felt like a little mad men lol ... i opened i like 5 minutes ago, and in the inside stands "its toasted" .... i couldnt believe what i saw :D
The season 1 set in 1960 has a few historical errors. This one is a strange historical error because most tobacco isn't toasted. In general, Matt Weiner and Company have done a great job though.
Not anymore. Nowadays, advertising is about preying on people's insecurities, and that you need our product to become a normal human being. And if you don't buy our product, no man or woman will ever want to spend time with you.
Most ad creators now really need to go to the University of Draper.
@Mrster if you want something perfectly accurate historically, watch a documentary. This is a primetime drama show, they aren't supposed to be accurate, because if they did, it'd be a DOCUMENTARY, got it?
I don't want something perfectly accurate. I already fine with the alternate reality of who created what, but it shouldn't be an anachromism, that usually makes things works. I'm sure they could've found another slogan.
to reelsweedishfish: you are correct. I have seen lucky strike magazine ads as far back as the 1930s and they say "its toasted" on the pack and in advertising. This show is historically incorrect by "at leas t" 20 years"
I wasn't saying I didn't like it, it's a great moment and yes it does add drama and entertainment. I just didn't know how much creative license they used lol.
But we don't need parents like you. We are all free and independent. If I wanted to stay with my parents I'd stay with them. I know the risks I just wanna live my life the way I want.
Parents? I wasn't even thinking of that at all. I was speaking as one adult to another (you ARE an adult, are you not? or maybe you are not). In any case, I care about people. I have no desire to be a "parent" to you. I don't even know you. Why do you see my advice as being so threatening to your "freedom?" Just take my advice -- and don't smoke. If you get toasted lungs, your "freedom" will be meaningless.
@Luigi84289 , no, I am not twisting anything. The fact that you saw me as dictating to you and saw me as trying to take the role of a parent says much more about you than about me. I gave you some advice. If you didn't like it, all you had to say is that you didn't like it. You didn't have to go off on a tangent about someone dictating to you. You might be a grown man but still very young and so probably have some unresolved issues in that area. But that's okay. Whatever.
see now you're just being an ass. How can you not see you are trying to tell other people what to do? Your'e the one with the superiority complex. Let everyone be free and do what they want. Keep your preaching to those that you are responsible for.
No, sorry, wrong again. I am giving you advice. Advice can be accepted or rejected. For some reason my advice for you not to smoke has turned, by you, into an invasion of your privacy, a deprivation of your freedom, and a parental admonition from someone who you believe has a superiority complex and who preaches. This is all your doing, son. This is all in your head. Read my posts with calm and you will see the truth. I simply advise you not to smoke. ADVICE. That is all. Peace.
haha, chris, the simple fact that you are bothering to keep replying to this guy shows that you are a preachy douche with a superiority complex and your merely trying to draw attention to yourself. especially with the passive aggressive jabs at him such as
"You might be a grown man but still very young and so probably have some unresolved issues in that area"
this also shows your superiority complex in that you are trying to adopt the role of an adult to talk down to your perceived "child"
Ha ha, alliesatastyflavor, the simple fact that you and others keep replying to me explains why I keep replying to you. I had forgotten about my posts here until you posted just one day ago (the last time I posted was four weeks ago. If I am merely trying to draw attention to myself, then why did I wait an entire month to post here again? Once again, I merely gave advice. its quite apparent that you didnt post again because your final post was never replied too. and now that this most recent one has been replied to i guarantee that you will have something more to say in your endeavor to look better than everyone else. unless of course that previous sentence gives you the moxie to stay quiet. either way you wont be hearing from me again, ta ta
@chrisman737 Because it becomes more than that through fear the masses look at smoking as negative never fully investigating facts for themselves or looking at the amount smoked for these effects to occur. You are telling people inadvertantly to get people to stop smoking. The reality is that you have to smoke very heavily for the people on the tubes conditions. The risk is much much lower if you smoke like me 1 pack for a week and a half that's 2 cigs a day. Substance abuse is the problem.
I can see your point. It is very clear that those who smoke three packs a day are much more at risk than those who smoke two cigarettes a day. I certainly see your point and agree with it. However, it is probable that smoking no cigarettes a day is healthier than smoking two cigarettes a day.
@chrisman737 And drinking no alcohol a day is more beneficial than drinking 1beer/1glass of wine etc. Risk is a part of life. If you abuse anything it will have dire consequences for you. Our bodies naturally produce imperfections over time leading to their eventual breakdown and decay. (aging) If I am going to die anyway I don't see anything wrong with enjoying the time I have. Abstaining for the sake of abstaining is not a very fun way to spend the time you have here.
No, he's right. He's not forcing you to do anything, he's just exercising his freedom to speak his mind, and allowing you to do the same thing with regard to ignoring or taking his advice.
There's no reason to get upset at someone for giving you good advice. If it makes you uncomfortable, that's not because he's taking away your freedom or forcing you to do anything, but because he's reminding you of your own poor decisions and making an argument to which you have no answer.
@pickmanfox And let me ask you do you want someone commenting to you on what the dangers are with everything you do in your life pulling out statistics? Technically it's very dangerous to leave your residence should people be telling you to stay indoors? it's good advice after all. My great grandmother would have lived into old age if she hadn't gone outside one day and been in a bus accident.
It really doesn't bother me. If someone wants to give me advice, he's welcome to do so. If it's good advice based on real facts, that's even better.
It's a bit silly to compare smoking with leaving the house. Automobiles do exact a terrible toll in lives, and that's a fact that is worth considering, but the actual chance of dying in a car accident over your whole lifetime is around 1 in 100 - it's not worth staying indoors for that.
@Luigi84289 hey now, hes not necessarily a liberal or a conservative either (i consider myself a conservative liberal and obama smoke). all this guy is, is a douchebag, who thinks that hes better than everyone else and wants everyone to know it.
@iDraw3G sigh... lol the idea is, the consumer believes what you tell them. even if it is poisonous, that's not the point because its "toasted". they don't have to mention that it's poisonous..
Are you kidding me? They needed Don Draper to tell them, "Hey, it's not a good idea to mention that your product kills people"? Were they actually considering TELLING consumers that it was poisonous; like they were trying to come up with a slogan that incorporated the word "poisonous"?
No see this is how market consumers make slogans...
It's no doubt cigarrettes are bad for you... obviously... but the whole point of "It's Toasted", is supposed to draw away the fears of your life, into the very shame fact if you ignore all the poisonous aspects, that you'll be fine.
Use your head. They are not going to say that they are not poisonous, since they don't have to. The advertising distracts people from that fact.
The slogan "It's toasted" ignores the poisonous aspect of smoking, and reassures people indirectly that smoking Lucky Strike's is alright and that they will be alright for doing so. This advertising, like most, preys on fear and tension people have in everyday life.
In Budweiser's case, "beechwood aging" is legitimate, because Anheuser-Busch DOES add beechwood chips during the aging process in brewing their beer, and is an exclusive process...
Do you brew beer, fromthesidelines, I do. If you try to duplicate a particular style you might try to make the water the same mineral content as the orginal. Example Indian Pale Ale you add Oak chips,to give it the flavor of this grand ale that was shipped to the British soldiers in India, a long sea trip. I think freedom, means you have the freedom to f... up!Other than children we all should have the 'right' to do anything we want, as long as it harms no one,but also pay the price.
But I think less expensive is some other countries. A friend brought some Lucky from Andorra. A 20 cigs box cost less than 3€ (4,5 $ approximatively). Damn lucky Andorrans ^^
ALL cigarettes are "toasted". Lucky Strike was the only brand during the '50s that got away with promoting the fact that THEIRS might be better than all the others because it was "toasted", and they played this up in all of their advertising....
This moment captivated me, especially the precursor conversation about how everyone dies any how, and that you've got to get where you're going regardless, so you mine as well smoke.
It's been my argument my whole life, seeing it take place in 'the 50's' made it all the better.
In this case "where you're going" is all too often spending the latter half of your life short of breath, coughing, and eventually enduring the horrific effects of throat and lung cancer.
It's about putting more life in your years, not more years on your life.
This is such an obviously weak argument the only explanation for anyone buying it, ever, is that it allows people to feel less dumb for doing something obviously self-destructive. It's a convenient belief, not a true belief.
@pickmanfox Yes but i know all that i don't need his advice. people should be free to smoke without getting bombarded with stuff like we're retarded. Smoking does have positive effects that are ignored like stimulating mental activity and helping digestion. I never have problems going to the john. They actually make smokeless E cigs now. Getting lung cancer like those old guys on TV is from years of smoking heavy 2, 3 packs a day. They abuse the substance too much. This is what is untold.
Firstly, you may not need his advice but it's up to you whether you take it. It's not up to you whether he 'should' be allowed to talk or not.
You have a right to smoke, he has a right to speak.
Secondly, he didn't give you any advice until you started arguing with him. All he did was state a fact to nobody in particular; you were the one who took it personally.
@pickmanfox see this is what I am talking about. All a bunch of misconceptions. You equate any kind of smoking with getting cancer, hole in the throat, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and on and on. All the while never looking at how much of the substance you have to use on a daily basis for those effects to have a moderate chance of occuring. You body is constantly cleaning itself, flushing unwanted substances and toxins.
It's true that lower rates of usage are less dangerous. If you smoke a pipe once a week then you're probably not in great danger, though I don't know the numbers. E cigarettes or vaporisers are an interesting idea, there isn't much data on the safety of them yet.
@frankwhite2020 no it's what's called reality. Going without smoking is a bitch but it's all a matter of how badly you want it. I have a friend who just quit cold turkey last month. No cig for 30 days and no desire to smoke at all.
@pickmanfox Most people don't know that it only takes 2 weeks for nicotine to clear the body. Thus no more cravings. They make it out like it's impossible to quit like the cigarettes/cigars have you in a deathgrip. It's a vice like anything else.
When you smoke nicotine binds to acetycholene receptors in your brain. Your brain gradually produces more of these receptors to deal with what it perceives as a surplus of acetycholene. When you stop smoking, you continue to have cravings until these receptors die off. It has nothing to do with when the nicotine actually leaves your body. This is why nicotine patches work, they allow you to lower the dose gradually.

Take the obvious and accentuate it!

@Luigi84289

@Luigi84289
It's true that lower rates of usage are less dangerous. If you smoke a pipe once a week then you're probably not in great danger, though I don't know the numbers. E cigarettes or vaporisers are an interesting idea, there isn't much data on the safety of them yet.

@Luigi84289 That's what's called wishful thinking.
frankwhite2020 1 year ago
@frankwhite2020 no it's what's called reality. Going without smoking is a bitch but it's all a matter of how badly you want it. I have a friend who just quit cold turkey last month. No cig for 30 days and no desire to smoke at all.

@Luigi84289
Though I'm sure he had the desire to beat the shit out of someone.

@pickmanfox Most people don't know that it only takes 2 weeks for nicotine to clear the body. Thus no more cravings. They make it out like it's impossible to quit like the cigarettes/cigars have you in a deathgrip. It's a vice like anything else.
Luigi84289 1 year ago
@Luigi84289

@pickmanfox It's all a matter of will power. Do you want to quit or keep smoking? If you want to quit 2 weeks is not that long to go.
