I was brought up in a strictly religious (Jewish) environment. But, as I got older and wiser, I rebelled against these ideas. For a time, I even went aganst Judaism. Now I do not follow any religion. No doubt, my parents are responsible for my religious scepticism.
The baby in this video is too young to remember what has gone on here. But his parents must not force their beliefs on their child because that will only alienate and drive him away from them.
I agree, wholeheartedly, with that erudite comment by my good friend, Adoor. Superstition is dying and the superstitious are a dying breed in India. This baby will reject rituals which he cannot understand and appreciate even if his parents insist on having them for their own very strange reasons - Im sure of that. And I sincerely hope that he (the baby) rejects them totallY before their own very eyes!
It is a mistake to think that all Hindus are superstitious. Opposition to superstition is growing (and not just from Marxists and Atheists) within the Hindu fold so much so that I can see a time (probably not in my lifetime but in the lifetime of this little baby, surely) when superstitious people will be regarded as the 'lunatic fringe' of mainstream Hindu faith as they have already become in western societies.
Every society has rituals which are part of their social identity. What is required is, as someone has already said, to separate those riuals which fit in with modernity from those which do not. Superstitions have no place in the modern setting. This little boy will reject them if his parents dont!
Id imagine Adithya's parents are doing what they are doing for their own satisfaction rather than for impressing the poor baby! I doubt if the little blighter will take the slightest bit of notice about any ritual that doesnt make sense to him. Why should he?
Adithya's parents, Do you really believe that tying a black thread round your baby's waist will protect it from anything? And astrology can predict his future?? If you did, dont tell him that when grows up coz he will have no respect for your views on anything thereafter!!!
Zam, If you really believe your family astrologer's prediction about your comeback, you are more stupid than you think, In Africa, too, we have witch doctors who claim they have direct link with God. They, like your astrologers, are taking advantage of people's ignorance.
Whats wrong with astrology? It is based on our ancient vedas and the most intricate of mathematics! Too complicated for ordinary minds, perhaps? As a matter of history, our family astrologer predicted our royal downfall 300 years ago. Poor astrologer!! He met the same fate as all messengers of bad news before him: he was tortured and killed!!! Look what happened to us!? Our current family astrologer has predicted our royal come-back. I hope that it happens in my life-time!!!!!
As is well known, I do not usually agree with VS on anything. But I must say that he is right on this one. By all means, let us keep our rich traditions. But let us shed these clumsy superstitions from them.
There is enough of good solid traditions in this ceremony to work on. Why do we always mix our important traditions with superstitions (like the black thread for warding off bad spirits!)? Why do we still consult astrologers in this day and age?? By doing that, we are only making ourselves the object of ridicule in many eyes! I enjoyed the video though. Another excellent production to an excellent collection of videos on our country beloved. Many thanks for uploading it.

It is good to follow family traditions but I agree we have to get rid of traditions which do not make sense in the modern world.

omg, that poor baby was not enjoying it. having the ribbon round his tummy!! He was crying. Why didn't the mother take it off?

I agree with that comment of mad. If the parents dont get rid of that stupid ribbon, the baby, when it grows up, certainly will!

Lovely baby. Shame about the stupid rituals he has to endure. If he has any brains, he will forget all this crap when he grows up!
