There is one bad mistake early in the commentary. Caruso's first recordings were made on flat discs, not cylinders. FW Gaisberg first recorded Caruso in a Milan hotel in March 1902 - ten titles were issued by Gramophone and Typewriter [later HMV]. A second G&T series was made in November, also on flat discs. Only in 1903 did Caruso make 10 recordings for AICC, three of which were issues as Pathe cylinders, the other 7 only as Zonophone flat discs.
I love Domingo's remarks on Caruso. :) (Domingo might be considered a modern Caruso.) I'm glad Pavarotti had something to say, but there's one tenor missing: Jose Carreras. I wish he would've said a few words about Caruso too.
Beyond great- Caruso's singing voice was the first I ever heard. After 50 years of listening to opera - Caruso's uniqueness grows. Melchior in his own repetoire is the only tenor with similar gifts and talents.
@65attila: Thanks, John. I remember very clearly the first time I heard the golden voice of Caruso. Bought a Caruso LP around 1972 (actually my first "operatic experience") and was completely enchanted. A voice and empathy that somehow escapes definition.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful documentary. Caruso is my idol. I agree with what Domingo said because when I heard Caruso sing, I all of a sudden knew how to sing!
ES CIERTO.....CARUSO SÓLO GRABÓ CILINDROS PARA PATHÈ EN 1905. BUENA FOTO DE LÁZARO,CARUSO Y RUFFO TOMADA EN BUENOS AIRES.

No other tenor in all history ever sang this aria quite the way Caruso did.
