Am I wrong or wasn't a man named "John Edwards" a famous psychic who had a television show in which the audience asked him questions about dead relatives and he contacted them? That's the first thing I thought of when I saw your name. Second, the fake background was apparent when you began talking, when your out in the woods your voice dosn't sound like your in a small boxed room. If you going to be real, be real. We have enough fake people in government already.
I don't have a video, but here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to write letters to the Congress to keep fighting! Keep fighting for alternative energy, universal healthcare and bringing our troops home. I will also blog and write the newspapers. I will try to give my friends and my community information that they will otherwise not get from mainstream channels. Knowledge is power. And the American people have been deprived of it for too long.
Edwards also believes the American society must redefine its values and the role of the family to fit new lifestyle concepts, which have resulted from the 60's counter-culture movement and an attitude that promotes an abrogation of individual responsibility.
Mr. Edwards believes that government, more and more of it, is the answer. I believe that would make him a socialist then. So, if you like socialism, vote for Mr. Edwards. But if you like individual liberty, private-property rights, less gov't intrusion, etc., as I adamantly do, I would vote for Dr. Ron Paul.
Mr. Edwards, I have a lot of respect for you, but I have heard horror stories about how socialized health care diminished the quality of care that people in Canada and the UK got. How is American Health care going to be different from that of other countries? Will it cost more for people with greater incomes? Is it going to be based on need, or "rationed"?
There still will be private care, if you choose to go with it. So you can keep everything as it is right now. But for those of us who don't have health insurance or who have bad health insurance, we will get adequate health insurance. The richest Americans still will have premium care, as they do now. So, think of it as Medicare for all uninsured Americans. (And Medicare, unlike HMO care, is incredibly efficient.)

bottom line: John Edwards supports infanticide. I'm not talking about abortion.. I'm talking about a baby delivered breech all the way until just the head is yet to come out - then the abortionist crushes the baby's skull to complete delivery. Edwards mourned the partial-birth abortion ban & the Supreme Court's upholding of it.
for the safety/health of the woman only, as any sane person should support. Drop your desperate attempts at slander, beg your man in the sky for help. Aborted babies go directly to heaven btw, no so bad really..
The best way to reduce partial-birth abortion is to prevent unwanted pregnancies. However, the Religious Right is its own worst enemy by preventing communication on effective birth control techniques. According to medical experts, 92 percent of abortions occur in women who said they used birth control. Six in 10 used contraception the month they got pregnant. Or, they accidently skipped a month. Much birth control is ineffective because of lack of proper education.
tag I'm it. Say I think this is the sharpest you've looked so far. Right on the issues too. I've had three bumper stickers on my car for over a year now;
Don't blame me, I voted for Kerry. <--- Turn Left At Next Election.
Nobody says "cut and run" anymore, man! Didn't you get the new talking points memo? Now we say "micromanage" the "war." Also, we don't say "Islamofascism" anymore because Americans realized that doesn't make any sense. And we also no longer say "stay the course," which the President says we never actually said, and that liberals made it up.
Healthcare! Ha! Please John. Get real. That reminds me I need to go to my HMO and get my regular check up. Got to stay healthy all the oil America burns in our air may affect my health so I need to be sure I am safe and sound. Thank you Edwards for amusing me. Makes me keep my integrity.
I know what I will do. Like a true American I will get rich by using the poor. I will work long and hard to buy a V-12 engine Mercedes that uses lots of oil. Why will I do it. Thats what my politicians do. Edwards and the rest of my political puppeteers. Have a nice day in your global warming mansions.
"The only thing connecting Edward's policy switches has been popularity. He wasw for war when it was popular, against it after it became umnpopular." Reason June 2007 issue
Whats wrong with re-evaluating one's position if it reflects the majority of the american populace. At least he is honest about his reasoning and consistently represents public opinion.
I would rather him be fickle to represent public opinion, as opposed to stubborn and strongheaded (re: bush) for the sake of not wanting to admit mistakes in the face of disaster or new evidence.
On ever evolving positions; when is it real and when is it pandering? Ever listened to Sean Hannity? He keeps telling his listeners to pressure the top tier (GOP) candidates to move to the right.
The problem with that is we end up electing people that fed us exactly what we wanted to hear during the election and then we end up being horribly suprised once they're actually elected, whereas if we'd been paying attention all along...
1.) Funding for your health care plan is vague, which seems to imply raising taxes.
2.)Your plan to end proverty sounds an awful lot like socialism.
3.)And regarding global warming, unless you can "cap" the gasses emitted by the oceans of the world, you cannot effect global warming. Due some actual scientific research PLEASE!
John, you are a real pain sometimes, you know that? It's annoyingly inspiring to see you working nonstop for a better country. My goodness you set a high bar!
I've already changed lightbulbs, turned down my thermostat, done One Corps events, written my congressman, and I'm working every day to get you elected president. And I'm going to keep ON doing it too! And once you're elected, I'm going to bug you on issues, and I won't always be as nice as I am now, either! (Well, probably I will.)
Mr. Edwards, I am looking forward to learning more about you and your position on more of the issues. At this time I have 3 questions: 1) why do you disagree with the Supreme Court on the recent Partial Birth Abortion issue? 2) Recently on Hardball, why did your wife make a race issue out of Pres. Bush going to VT quickly after the tragedy? That seemed really wrong to me. 3) why did you not speak out more on the horrific Iraq is lost comments by Mr. Reid? That also seems really wrong to me.
What gets me is the claim that we need to listen to the generals. If the Administration had listened to the generals, we wouldn't have occupied without at least 500000 troops. We should listen to the generals, and should have done so. They saw this coming.
that is not to say that it is too late. In fact they are saying it is NOT too late. Unfortunately congress lacks leadership. What they need to do is worry more about leading this country and less about their next election. Unfortunately again, I voted for them and I regrets it greatly.
Clearly a comment without intellect and off point. "if we follow the Presidents course the war is lost" Here is fact, he gave an opinion which is different from a fact... and his opinion is that the US Military cannot win the war. I think you and Reid would be better off living in France. You really have no understanding of reality do you. And what happen we surrender as our weak gutless congress wants to do? See if you can answer that one.
*My* country was founded by a bunch of intellectuals who loved the French and French thought. Indeed, the constitution of my country is full of French philosophical thought (and British, as well). Not only were the people who founded my country intellectuals who loved the French, but they would have laughed at the "If you don't like it, go to France" sentiment. Indeed, they said, "If you don't like it, *stay* and change the government." *I'm* an American, btw.
that was then, this is now. France is weak. Harry Reid is weak and a disgrace. Typical to the partisan political baloney that is Reid's trademark , he simply tried to spare himself the public fury by quoting what he thought others believe, as if he knows at all what Rice and Gates thinks. He is completely transparent and it is beyond obvious what he implied. Anyone who thinks differently is naive and fooling himself or herself. Reid is a disgrace and his comments are irresponsible.
Damn you live in the same country I do. Gee who is that French fellow referred to so often in the Federalist Papers? Hmmm I won't tell I bet someone around here has never read them nor understands the principals this country was founded on.
I can answer any intelligent question put to me. But fear mongering tripe is worthless. I have always gone for the give the military everything they need approach and kill your enemy until the beg you to stop, unlike the Clown Posse running this show.
Give them half of what they need and expect to succeed.
France went through the experience of Algeria, and this experience was even more gut-wrenching than Iraq because the Algerian terrorists were taking their battles directly to France. The French saw what was coming and wanted no part in it. President Bush and his advisors did not take enough history and were too full of their own arrogance and cocksureness.
by the way, is your name Mr. Edwards? why does your type always start with the hate and anger responses. Is it that difficult to give a simple respectful comment?
Zontor2, "Get it right" "I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and - you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows - (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday," said Reid, D-Nev. Is that for a fact enough for you? Reid implied it himself is a partisan baloney statement.
You misquoted Reid period. I provided the correct quote. Apparently it is much easier to misquote Reid and attack what he didn't say (the straw man argument) than to correctly quote him and defend Bush's failed policies.
What I wrote above is exactly what Reid said. Do the research or watch his news clip on YouTube or CNN or MSNBC or Fox. Your own arrogance got in the way of sound judgment and fact finding. For one who writes with such conviction, I'd think you'd want to have your facts correct. why defend this paritsan blow hard? He is everything that is wrong with politics in my opinion
What Reid said was that he believed that Rice and Gates believed the war was lost. The issue isn't as cut-and-dried as the media makes it out to be. It would be an interesting debate to have as to why he would say that he believed they believed (I think "know" was the verb used) the war was lost. But that can't happen if the media doesn't report the statement correctly.
Excellent work at the debate last night! You were the only one not made of plastic. I especially like how you took your time on the mentor question- you came off like a genuine, real person. Go you!
You have a good point. i liked it because i feel that thinking quick on one's feet is overrated. It's unusual for anyone, especially a candidate, to actually think about what to say before it comes out of their mouth. i wish more people would do that and in that moment he seemed the exception to the rule, so it impressed me. i just assumed that candidates are well-trained in automatically spewing what sounds good and that answering genuinely is so difficult that it takes more time to uncover.
If he'd been triangulating, I'd think he'd have said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Not that it wouldn't have been a perfectly sound choice, but, if one were thinking politically, it would've played very well in the venue.
Well, I thought Richardson was a little different from the run-of-the-mill tax, spend, and grow the government postition that far too many Dems put forth (as opposed to Republicans who SAY their for reducing gov. spending, taxes, etc. and then do the exact same thing the Dems do.)
I don't understand what is wrong with a big government if that government is providing essential services. Now, right now the Goverment is huge, and too much of that money is going to building better ways to kill people. That's no good. But I trust the Government more than I trust the corporations, at least in terms of who has my best interest in mind. Who else will protect us from the corporations who will do anything to make money?
Nothing is wrong with "big government", ord, if we, the owners of government, want it so. Keep the faith and question! This will keep strong our great republic (ya, I stole their name).
This new batch of Republicans wants to bankrupt the government. They want to take over government, loot it, and make over the USA as Dilbert-land. If you turn government over to people who absolutely hate government, you won't get quality government--you'll get Halliburton.
bottom line: John Edwards supports infanticide. I'm not talking about abortion.. I'm talking about a baby delivered breech all the way until just the head is yet to come out - then the abortionist crushes the baby's skull to complete delivery. Edwards mourned the partial-birth abortion ban & the Supreme Court's upholding of it.
He mourned the thought that the law now requires that doctors, in partial-birth abortion situations, have to let a woman die before they can legally remove the fetus that's killing her. It's not a choice issue, it's a health issue, and the Supreme Court said women don't matter.
One subject many democrats lose me on is "so called gun control" What are your views on our 2nd ammendment rights? And the role of state laws in these matters? I don't mind the government knowing what fireararms I own, I just don't want my rights taken away. Making new laws never helps with crime- why? Criminals don't give a damn about laws. I'm from NY and here the laws are VERY strict- for honest citizens. But if you're a bad guy, getting guns iligally is easy.
A few gun shop owners are responsible for a huge % of the guns that fall into the hands of criminals. Some lawmakers want to penalize such shop owners, but NRA tries to stop the essential record-keeping. NRA also insists that gun shows allow instant sales with no background checks, to permit sales of assault weapons, and to limit sharing of gun registration data by law officers. NRA is responsible for aiding and abetting criminals. Law enforcement officers get no help from the NRA.
I have dedicated myself to teaching first-generation college students in a state university. My students learn about global warming and what they can do about it, and they learn about global poverty. We discuss the ethical implications of both states of affairs. So, what am I doing? I'm teaching my students to think critically, to evaluate arguments, and to investigate the ethical implications of two of the most pressing issues we face today.
I USED to like John Edwards, until I heard that he paid $400 for a haircut!!! I mean, even if he DID use his own money for it, it STILL proves that he does NOT have his priorities in order!!! VOTE FOR KUCINICH!!!
What do you think, he shopped around? He told his staff, "I need a haircut," they found a stylist who could come to John Edwards and cut his hair while on the move, John Edwards' staff paid the bill, and that was that. I wonder how much your haircut would cost if they had to come to you to do it.
I used to be a hairdresser. I can guarantee it wouldn't cost that much:)
I don't give a rip how much he pays, but I'm tired of rich politicians, like Gore & Edwards, in my face telling me I now need to ride a bike to work and buy $5 light bulbs (that I have no way of disposing of because of the mercury). The same politicians call us selfish because we don't want to give them even more out of our paychecks so they can stay in office by buying votes through lobbyists.
You're right about the taxes. The rich wind up paying proportionally less in taxes than does the middle class. That's not right. It began with Reagan, and continued to get worse with Clinton, though it slowed down somewhat. Neither Gore nor Edwards has ever exhorted anyone in the way you suggest, though.
Uh, I'm pretty sure he's a Republican. I mean, he scrubbed his '06 campaign website of the word, but that just means he's ashamed of it. Which shows good judgment, but also deception, and I've had enough of that.
Matthews and now Olberman have proven they're paid help Hillary "no shrillness in her voice.. sounding presidential" Obama giving multi-layered answers.. " sounding presidential?" Obama answered NOT ONE question...
Corp. media is shoving Obama Clinton down our throats, aided/ abetted by the likes of Richardson/ Biden... Dems will lose in '08 if this sham continues. Anyone notice how the camera followed Obama around post debate to the near exclusion of everyone else?
Miseryman can't stop using spin to make his point, he's just another slack-jawed yokel living in the dark ages. He should put his money where his mouth is and join the army instead of insisting someone else to flex muscle for him.
Hey missourimammoth...Not much, except I've traveled to every corner of this state from the Ozarks to Hannibal, from St. Joseph to my home in St. Louis that I've called my home for 31 years. So go use a spell check and read something besides the bible and sports illustrated to understand what's really happening in this messy world. Booyakasha...Wesside...
USA USA! Sloga slogan slogan! Mindless mindless mindless! Drone drone drone! Baah baah baaah! Don't worry people, not everyone from Missouri is as big of a pawn for the ignorant as 'missouriman'
NO TO WAR. War never solved anything. Except to make the war Profiteers richer and made more Generals. If you must have a war, then tax it and pay for it. And open up the draft with no deferments.
Universal Health Care. Make Medicare accessible to everyone.
Have a Foreign Policy that is good for all the people not just for a few multi national corporations.
Universal health care scares me. If we can't trust the government to pave roads and keep New Orleans from flooding, how can we trust you with the health of all those that we love? After Katrina, I came to realize one thing... if you depend on the government for your well being you are screwed. Period.
I understand this. But with universal health care, could go with a private company. It turns out, though, that health care is one thing that the Federal Government does well. Medicare is incredibly efficient, much more so than privately-run insurance. Other industrialized countries spend no more than 10% of GDP to insure all of their people. We spend almost 15% to insure some of ours, and many of those who have insurance have sub-par insurance.
Yes, Medicare does a fair job. But we're talking about UNIVERSAL health care. No longer dealing with a percentage of the population, the government will find a way to screw it up. I'll never put my faith in the government to take care of me or those that I love.
That's what makes the Edwards plan so great for our time. If you don't have confidence in public health care, you can still go private. You choose. If the public plan succeeds here the way it has in Europe (I have an American, Republican sister in Italy and she prefers it), then privatized health care will collapse on its own in the spirit of free-market economic Darwinism.
It all sounds good. Do you think the votes will be there or will this falter like the Clinton plan? I'm going to look at Edwards plan and see what he has to say. I'm a conservative libertarian and I'm not sure where my vote will go. I'm also a thirty-something African American married woman (to a Jewish Republican) and mother of one. There are more of us than the Democrats want to admit. Times are changing Mr. Edwards.
Some universal HC will go through. What is different from 1993 is that a) people see no private sector solution to insuring people adequately (it's very hard to make money insuring all the people who need to be insured) and b) businesses are calling for reform (it's getting too expensive for them to provide health care). The question is as to the details-will Federal money go to private companies to insure people (a bad idea-far too expensive), or will the Government itself run the plan?
The Clinton fiasco unfairly damaged the reputation of universal care, but I think the Edwards plan will be able to differentiate itself from that failure. My hope is that it'll function to ease Americans into the idea like a hot bath. But definitely do look into it -- I'm not with the campaign, so I may have missed some of the ins and outs. Hopefully I've represented it fairly and accurately, though. Good luck in finding a candidate who's as satisfactory to you as John Edwards is to me!
What's a conservative to do when corporations have redefined wasteful inefficiency? Throw more money down the hole out of principle? I hope you have some choice stocks to go with your philosophical consistency.
Actually, I believe the GOVERNMENT has redefined wasteful inefficiency.
I happen to be a lower-middle class working stiff who happens to see that politicians on BOTH sides of the aisle are ruining us with Federal entitlement programs for business AND the poor.
Local communities/your neighbors are in a much better position to decide who really needs help and who is content to live off the government teat.
Fair enough, then! I don't agree with you, but you're clearly not the fool I presumptuously gave you credit for (sorry about that). Not a big FDR fan, then?
The way poverty is figured is suspect. Since it is based entirely on income, you could be retired and have plenty of assets and still be considered below the poverty line.
I'm not against helping those in need. I AM against Federal programs throwing money at everything when they're too far away from the problem to have a clue. Katrina anyone?
I'm living in Katrina land, and have seen corrupt pols my entire life... and the results.
My point was that there would be far fewer people in need if people who worked were paid a living fair wage. I would rather pay more for my goods than save a few cents at Wall Mart, only have it cost me 1000s when an employee w/o health care ends up in the ER.
Katrina is a perfect example. Campers that cost $12K -$18K have now passed the $100K mark in taxpayer costs. Most of the money is sucked up by contractors. Bechtel anyone?
FEMA send out 2 different people each month to each camper to "evaluate & inspect". Employees make $10/hr, contractor charges taxpayer $20/hr.
With your universal health care plan, you said it would require higher taxes, but aren't the American people already paying enough taxes as it is? If you want a universal health care plan, maybe you should look into what Mitt Romney did with Health Care in Massachusetts and consider putting that plan in place nationwide. Oh wait, Romney is already talking about encouraging states to develop similar plans. Oops, too late, sorry Mr. Edwards.
If the rich paid more, and we closed the loopholes used by the rich to get out of paying taxes, we'd have plenty of money for this. (I recommend highly the book *Perfectly Legal*, about how the US tax system is regressive, de facto.)
You mean loopholes like John Edwards no doubt uses? The middle class gets gamed from both sides on this issue. The poor no taxes, the rich (think Edwards, Romney, etc.) can afford to take advantage of all the loopholes, which is perfectly legal. Get RID of the 16th Amendment and ennact the Fair Tax.
I'll tell you what I'm doing - I'm building an electric car powered by solar panels that can run for 300 miles in the dark or where there is no sunlight. It will go from 0mph to 60mph in 7 secs and not require a single drop of American Soldier's blood.
Edwards you're going to have a tough time changing the perception of other nations in the world about America when America is still addicted to OIL. Tell us how you're going to get the US off OIL then you'll be worth voting for.
To paraphrase another luminary, Ayn Rand said the altruism (at its most pure form) is inherently EVIL. Why should I (a private person) make such an expensive sacrifice while World Corporations continue to make vast amounts of money while polluting the Earth. That money could be put to much better use for my family (like stockpiling the goods that we'll need when wheel stops turning). Idealism had its time and place but that time is over.
I also don't believe in altruism. You try to be an example to the world b/c this is how you ensure the world is sustainable for humanity including yourself; it's pretty selfish of me. Actually if you vote for John Edwards or Dennis Kucinich, they will bring in carbon markets to America and the big companies will stop polluting too.
And when America shows the world how to be economically prosperous and environmentally sustainable, India and China will follow. This way you will save humanity and yourself. It's a win-win! :-)!
Everything sounds good...in a campaign. Once the elections are over it is the same ole, same ole. Tell me Senator, why would be any different. Why should us voters give you politicians the benefit of the doubt any more? How many times can we be let down?
I am very interested and supportive of your goals, ideas, and campaign.
I attend Lowell High School in SF (come by and visit!) which just started a big program to curb unnecessary waste. We've installed compost and recycle bins everywhere on campus, and participation and compliance has been overwhelming.
I like your goals, but I'd like to hear further details on how you plan to achieve each goal.
Energy: We have already changed most of our bulbs. We're replacing our old windows. We're looking into solar, right now, but it's a little expensive.
Environment: I went online & found a recipe for organic pesticide spray, instead of the toxic stuff. Growing my own produce. We're not mowing every weekend, more like one every 3 weeks. We recycle & reuse.

Also, we don't say "Islamofascism" anymore because Americans realized that doesn't make any sense. And we also no longer say "stay the course," which the President says we never actually said, and that liberals made it up.

ord1711 4 years ago
that is not to say that it is too late. In fact they are saying it is NOT too late. Unfortunately congress lacks leadership. What they need to do is worry more about leading this country and less about their next election. Unfortunately again, I voted for them and I regrets it greatly.
tjw12 4 years ago
Clearly a comment without intellect and off point. "if we follow the Presidents course the war is lost" Here is fact, he gave an opinion which is different from a fact... and his opinion is that the US Military cannot win the war. I think you and Reid would be better off living in France. You really have no understanding of reality do you. And what happen we surrender as our weak gutless congress wants to do? See if you can answer that one.
tjw12 4 years ago
*My* country was founded by a bunch of intellectuals who loved the French and French thought. Indeed, the constitution of my country is full of French philosophical thought (and British, as well). Not only were the people who founded my country intellectuals who loved the French, but they would have laughed at the "If you don't like it, go to France" sentiment. Indeed, they said, "If you don't like it, *stay* and change the government." *I'm* an American, btw.
ord1711 4 years ago
that was then, this is now. Reid is a disgrace and his comments are irresponsible.
tjw12 4 years ago
Damn you live in the same country I do. Gee who is that French fellow referred to so often in the Federalist Papers? Hmmm I won't tell I bet someone around here has never read them nor understands the principals this country was founded on.

Reid implied it himself is a partisan baloney statement.
tjw12 4 years ago
You misquoted Reid period. I provided the correct quote. Apparently it is much easier to misquote Reid and attack what he didn't say (the straw man argument) than to correctly quote him and defend Bush's failed policies.
Zontor2 4 years ago
What I wrote above is exactly what Reid said. Do the research or watch his news clip on YouTube or CNN or MSNBC or Fox. Your own arrogance got in the way of sound judgment and fact finding. For one who writes with such conviction, I'd think you'd want to have your facts correct. why defend this paritsan blow hard? He is everything that is wrong with politics in my opinion
tjw12 4 years ago
What Reid said was that he believed that Rice and Gates believed the war was lost. The issue isn't as cut-and-dried as the media makes it out to be. It would be an interesting debate to have as to why he would say that he believed they believed (I think "know" was the verb used) the war was lost. But that can't happen if the media doesn't report the statement correctly.

You have a good point. i liked it because i feel that thinking quick on one's feet is overrated. bottom line: John Edwards supports infanticide. I'm not talking about abortion.. I'm talking about a baby delivered breech all the way until just the head is yet to come out - then the abortionist crushes the baby's skull to complete delivery. Edwards mourned the partial-birth abortion ban & the Supreme Court's upholding of it.
CarsonWeber 4 years ago
He mourned the thought that the law now requires that doctors, in partial-birth abortion situations, have to let a woman die before they can legally remove the fetus that's killing her. It's not a choice issue, it's a health issue, and the Supreme Court said women don't matter.

NO TO WAR. War never solved anything. Except to make the war Profiteers richer and made more Generals. If you must have a war, then tax it and pay for it. And open up the draft with no deferments.
Universal Health Care. Make Medicare accessible to everyone.
Have a Foreign Policy that is good for all the people not just for a few multi national corporations.
fiberyarn 4 years ago
Universal health care scares me. If we can't trust the government to pave roads and keep New Orleans from flooding, how can we trust you with the health of all those that we love? After Katrina, I came to realize one thing... if you depend on the government for your well being you are screwed. Period.
Interminablespirt 4 years ago
I understand this. But with universal health care, could go with a private company. It turns out, though, that health care is one thing that the Federal Government does well. Medicare is incredibly efficient, much more so than privately-run insurance. Other industrialized countries spend no more than 10% of GDP to insure all of their people. We spend almost 15% to insure some of ours, and many of those who have insurance have sub-par insurance.
ord1711 4 years ago
Yes, Medicare does a fair job. But we're talking about UNIVERSAL health care. No longer dealing with a percentage of the population, the government will find a way to screw it up. I'll never put my faith in the government to take care of me or those that I love.
Interminablespirt 4 years ago
That's what makes the Edwards plan so great for our time. If you don't have confidence in public health care, you can still go private. You choose. If the public plan succeeds here the way it has in Europe (I have an American, Republican sister in Italy and she prefers it), then privatized health care will collapse on its own in the spirit of free-market economic Darwinism.
ILoooooveCamels 4 years ago
It all sounds good. Do you think the votes will be there or will this falter like the Clinton plan? I'm going to look at Edwards plan and see what he has to say. I'm a conservative libertarian and I'm not sure where my vote will go. I'm also a thirty-something African American married woman (to a Jewish Republican) and mother of one. There are more of us than the Democrats want to admit. Times are changing Mr. Edwards.
Interminablespirt 4 years ago
Some universal HC will go through. What is different from 1993 is that a) people see no private sector solution to insuring people adequately (it's very hard to make money insuring all the people who need to be insured) and b) businesses are calling for reform (it's getting too expensive for them to provide health care). The question is as to the details-will Federal money go to private companies to insure people (a bad idea-far too expensive), or will the Government itself run the plan?
ord1711 4 years ago
The Clinton fiasco unfairly damaged the reputation of universal care, but I think the Edwards plan will be able to differentiate itself from that failure. My hope is that it'll function to ease Americans into the idea like a hot bath. But definitely do look into it -- I'm not with the campaign, so I may have missed some of the ins and outs. Hopefully I've represented it fairly and accurately, though. Good luck in finding a candidate who's as satisfactory to you as John Edwards is to me!

Most of the poor do work, their employers fail to pay them enough to care for themselves and the gov't (you & me) pay for the difference.
gmfutube 4 years ago
The way poverty is figured is suspect. Since it is based entirely on income, you could be retired and have plenty of assets and still be considered below the poverty line.
I'm not against helping those in need. I AM against Federal programs throwing money at everything when they're too far away from the problem to have a clue. Katrina anyone?
Area417 4 years ago
I'm living in Katrina land, and have seen corrupt pols my entire life... and the results.
My point was that there would be far fewer people in need if people who worked were paid a living fair wage. I would rather pay more for my goods than save a few cents at Wall Mart, only have it cost me 1000s when an employee w/o health care ends up in the ER.
gmfutube 4 years ago
Katrina is a perfect example. Campers that cost $12K -$18K have now passed the $100K mark in taxpayer costs. Most of the money is sucked up by contractors. Bechtel anyone?
FEMA send out 2 different people each month to each camper to "evaluate & inspect". Employees make $10/hr, contractor charges taxpayer $20/hr.
gmfutube 4 years ago
What do you mean and are you addressing me?
Interminablespirt 4 years ago
With your universal health care plan, you said it would require higher taxes, but aren't the American people already paying enough taxes as it is? If you want a universal health care plan, maybe you should look into what Mitt Romney did with Health Care in Massachusetts and consider putting that plan in place nationwide. Oh wait, Romney is already talking about encouraging states to develop similar plans. Oops, too late, sorry Mr. Edwards.
romney08 4 years ago
If the rich paid more, and we closed the loopholes used by the rich to get out of paying taxes, we'd have plenty of money for this. (I recommend highly the book *Perfectly Legal*, about how the US tax system is regressive, de facto.)
ord1711 4 years ago
You mean loopholes like John Edwards no doubt uses? The middle class gets gamed from both sides on this issue. The poor no taxes, the rich (think Edwards, Romney, etc.) can afford to take advantage of all the loopholes, which is perfectly legal. Get RID of the 16th Amendment and ennact the Fair Tax.

To paraphrase another luminary, Ayn Rand said the altruism (at its most pure form) is inherently EVIL. Why should I (a private person) make such an expensive sacrifice while World Corporations continue to make vast amounts of money while polluting the Earth.
