We're all used to seeing Mischa Barton as Marissa, but seriously, she is such a bad actress, they could have made a better choice. IMHO, Ben McKenzie didn't exactly fit the role of badboy Ryan either, but at least he acted better than her.
Human animals should be smart. Why get into pairs?. Too weak can't live on our own? Burrow someone else nose to breath? Just more heavy thing to carry for our life. Shy of single animals? Even some animals can live on their own. Don't rely on anyone. it is more thing to carry for our life.
