Their mistake was not to go hiking in Iran, which is not dangerous at all for foreigners in most parts of the country; but they were hiking in an unsafe region (Iraq/Iran border) and they entered the country illegally and by accident. That was pretty thoughtless.

I think they should not be attacked for going on vacation there. At least Iran is a quite safe place for foreigners, as long as you don't get into trouble they got themselves into...

I hope they can return home soon.
