  • Stewie Griffith lives...

  • genius

  • Too fast too young too die

  • One of the best lectures I've seen. There is no youth culture movement because all the corporations have everything sown up. Individual vision has been crushed underfoot and homogeneity is allowed to thrive. We need another McLaren.

  • I've heard my grandparents rant about this. It's just the usual mish-mash of superficial nostalgia and cliches. Want a struggle? Why don't you prepare quality speech with some original insight?

  • @oliversisson Well, maybe you should go and sing some karaoke; you'll feel alright.

  • @oliversisson wow, a bit harsh?

  • Fear of failure really causes people to never try to achieve their greatness. Everyone fails, but it his how you endure the struggle that will allow you to appreciate your accomplishments and respect those who try to achieve greatness as well.

  • r.i.p

  • Karaoke Culture? Apparently there was no pre-lecture visit to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where a group of misfit, trained, highly educated, humble, hilarious and innovative new school soul artists began integrating culture into karaoke. This is not your pianoman karaoke. This is real. This is cultural. This is intellectual and intriguing. This is Art. I think art has something to do with culture, both definitions.

  • Great philosophy.......

  • When I feel like I haven't been academic enough...I go to TED.

  • THIS WINE!!

  • There need to be more people thinking like this in the world

  • He is actually dead now, there should be a note at the top: "the Late".

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • All of the audio is in the left channel... and my left earbud is shot.

    Dammit.

  • man, cant it be more like:

    1. Un-cool people have time to study

    2. idiots dont die by natural causes anymore (tigers and disease)

    3. Idiots seem more prolific... and thats why everyone wants to be famous, because they're idiots, and even idiots want to be rich and powerful.

Inelegance has nothing to do with sympathy so why should the inelegant take care of the stupid?

  • @nerdStarwars Yes. It's more like that.

  • "He arrived at the venue tired and short of breath, which you can hear during his talk. We thought it was just a cold. Days later we discovered he was unwell and then soon diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos many years earlier. Some believe this exposure occurred when creating the shop on London's Kings Road referred to during his talk." -Ted

  • @Ustp27

It is more likely to be at his "home"in the bathroom than the shop.

  • so negative

  • @check537 wanker.

  • @FishyMoe I felt the same in my 20's. Word of wisdom then, from an old codger - get out there and join a philosophy group, book club, something like that. Volunteer at a university.. anything to get you mixing with people that stimulate your mind. Don't let yourself go without that mental nutrition, or you'll be wasting your talent. You obviously have an enquiring mind.. find out what it's seeking and pursue it!

  • @foiblebear yeah i am mixing with more people, but sadly even uni wasn't stimulating enough for me. No one wanted to question the validity of research, no one wanted to contribute or debate the knowledge they were being presented, everyone (my age) was very apathetic. I got along well with the teachers at least haha. I will try book clubs or a philosophy group sounds like something i need to do. If it wasn't for the internet, i'd feel even worse so thank Christ for it. and thanks for commenting

  • @FishyMoe I find Meetup.com is great for finding groups of people with the same interests. It's also important to take that feeling of dissatisfaction and do something with it. If you feel the need to question further, sit in on some higher level lectures. Follow your interests. If you just feel the need to express your thoughts, try Toastmasters (public speaking group). Just as the body needs exercise outside the daily routine, I think the brain does too.

  • @FishyMoe Dear Fishy, are you a doctor, then?

  • Hi

Apologies to those having problems with audio.

Clip has been reviewed on a variety of Windows PC's, MacBooks, MacPro's, Imac's, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, PlayStation 3 and so on without trouble. So a bit baffled at the moment.

In the meantime if you're still experiencing difficulty you can also catch this video on:

    Blip TV - bit.ly / mclaren-vid

    iTunes - bit.ly / HHLiTunes or bit.ly / LWFiTunes

  • Yeh this guy talks pretty damn slow, but it's also pretty damn funny when his voice cracks unexpectedly now and then..

  • yes it is a good idea to reupload it, jus copy audio to left chanel, that is all, then it would be more enjoyible

  • Why the hell does he talk so slowly?

  • @KRA3030 - "Why the hell does he talk so slowly?"

Because he was old, giving a speech about an area outside his normal expertise, and about to die of mesothelioma. Too bad he didn't come with a cheat code, but thanks for proving his point. Your karaoke is calling you back, shoo.

  • karaoke culture is like fucking an inflatable doll! lmfao. yep, the real deal is waayyy better. he's brilliant

  • Yes, I here because TED! The left channel it´s the only one working! Still a great talk! And the end is brilliant!

  • 1 of the best TED speeches

  • I think he is wrong about any kind of failure being better than success... yeah, sure it's great to not let failure deter you but don't settle for it

  • This needs to be reupped ... I had to turn my speakers up to the max to hear the audio, and just barely at that.

  • I'm afraid I don't get the point of this talk at all.

  • @fantysq You don't get it because you are of the karaoke generation.

  • snoozer

  • holy shit this guy talks slow

  • @damancandance1 your brain works slow

  • ANYONE that considers themselves a free thinker owes it to themselves to watch this. Malcolm is brilliant in his speech.

  • TED brought me here. Thanks for the upload.

  • No audio at all?

  • @lh526 Audio is left side only

  • @Vennificus Thanks, audio totaly distorted on Apple / MacPro, confirmed on three other machines.

  • What's with the audio? It seems all just in the left channel?

  • @adsr303 nah not for me

  • @adsr303 i just pulled my earphones out halfway and it spread the left channel over both sides of the earphones, it was irritating with only the left channel

  • @adsr303 : Yeah...thanks for the comment...I thought my right channel stopped working...
