well as someone said a couple of comments below, this has just a bit of belly dance and is not really traditional belly dance.Ultra Gipsies know that also better than us. In fact is another way of fusion with Techno/ Industrial tendencies. The piano melody and some elements of the 20s, the misterious atmosphere, those movements with hands and arms, the dark, somehow depressive dressing aproach us to the Gothic. And as you say it is a theatrical piece,a very important aspect of the gothic.
Great music, needs a lot of work in the gestures and overall sync, but really is not very much about belly dance at all. Not sure I like this piece. It's trying to expand, for sure, but it seems more like a theater piece rather than a showcase of experimental belly dance fusion. Ultra Gypsy a few years back was far better.... what's up?
Thanks for your comments! You are right! Ultra Gypsy is a dance theatre company. This is a theatrical piece, and is actually a fusion of jazz with Turkish Roman (among other dance forms), as choreographed by two dancers who went to Turkey extensively to study the style. You can see other examples of Turkish Roman dance on YouTube, like this one by Ozgen - watch?v=OHp5vg6HWvg
I love it. This is progressive fusion. It's not mostly belly dance but it incorporates core elements of belly dance into a more fosse style number.
