Anyone doing this needs to know 1 major important detail alot of people don't show in their clips. When re-installing any of these bolts, like the one going in the trimplate or the ones holding the impeller body down, or the ones holding the foot on. USE ANTI-SEIZE on all the bolts when replacing or you may never get them out again the next time.
Everyone knows that grease would not last 2 seconds in salt water with impeller its only for ease of installation. But I do agree how did the wiring take place. Thanks for the advice I found it helpful as a new boat owner automotive mechanice.
On top of the gaskets being replaced, the one under the water pump base should be replaced also. the plastic divider block behind the base should be cleaned and a bead of silicone applied across it before the lower unit is reinstalled
I have a 2001 mercury optimax 150 and just changed the impeller but i cannot get the lower unit to fit back in correctly. i have read a lot about it and nothing has helped...i have tried to turn the drive shaft with my hand but that doesnt seem to work...i have the boat in gear. please help!!!!!

If you are going to "Harp" on the use of "Marine Grease" instead of "Never sieze" on lower unit "BOLTS" , why are you putting a "Petroleum" product like "GREASE" on a "Rubber" impeller (Petroleum degrades rubber), If you knew what the FUCK you were talking about, YOU WOULD KNOW THIS !
There is some truth to what you are saying about the "Nickel" in Never sieze however, if you just use (even marine rated) grease on the "Lower unit" bolts, it will easily wash away, and the bolts will become "ONE" with the lower unit (corrosion) making "Pump change out" a real "JOY", If you change out your water pump every two years and re-apply the "Never seize" to the bolts, it will always come apart easily, anyhow, that's how "I" Fly,....Thank's for sharing helpful info.
Just a comment for those who are considering replacing their own water pump. A marine water proof grease does not simply wash away and bolts don't become one with regular maintenance. If you are operating in severe salt conditions and want to up the ante then use Mercury Marine's anti corrosive grease. Never seize is not recommended in salt water environments and only substitutes for poor maintenance. (Marine Tech)
Hi, When I change out my w/p I use "HAIR GEL" to put the new impeller in the housing on the kit, it washes away in a few seconds, you don't want to put "grease" on rubber (although, it prolly washes away quickly in corrosive salt water). I also would glob some "NEVER-SEIZE" on those bolts before re-installation of the lower unit to make the next w/p "change out" go much easier, Thank's for sharing !
Hi, @justanotherengine Outboards should be serviced once a season. Use only a waterproof grease on your bolts and a smear of grease for water pump impeller insertion. With regular maintenance there is no need to be using Never-Seize. Never-Seize contains Nickel and by using it you are introducing another dissimilar metal. Living on the coast of the Great Barrier Reef the salt content is high and during my years of repairing outboards we often saw the electrolytic results of using never-seize.
Well for starters it's not all that easy... You need to shift in gear "forward" this allows you to align shift rod during re-install. Check housing for wear if it looks good then put it back on. Good luck you might want a buddy to help
Hi @chasingtail2 I'd disagree with putting it into forward gear. By placing the engine in neutral gear before removing the gearbox the lower shift shaft is less likely to alter as it's rotation is held in place by the neutral gear shift cam detent against the cam follower inside the gearbox. By having it in forward the lower shift shaft can rotate slightly causing misalignment of the upper and lower shift shaft and frustration on installation.
I have a boat that i have to sell, but dont know anything about boats.....Its a i think 1998 or 2000 164 cayman flats boat with the tower, 1998 Mercury 115 hp & a Loadmaster trailer ....I need to find out a price range to ask for $....Thanks!
Thanks, Never did any work on my outboard before but you saved me $60 an hour (min 4 hrs) for some guy to come fix it for me. It took me by myself 45min to do the hole job on the curb outside my house. O'ya, With lube, and new impeller kit. it cost me $57.. Thanks again...

great videos. I'm having a problem now with a 175 EFI giving me an overheat alarm at around 2500-3000RPM, but when Im running 4000RPM or more it doesn't do it. I'm going to change the thermostats first and had no idea where they were and the next step will be changing the water pump. I always thought it would be easy, but these videos make it really easy!
@OutboardAdvice i did actually! i forgot exactly what was going on with it, i was doing something stupid and wrong though. thanks so much man, good lookin out man!
@clifflindsey@clifflindsey - Had the same problem with my merc 150 that had been sitting up for 2 years. Removed lower unit and used pressure sprayer to shoot water through pee-hole. Then hooked water hose directly to intake tube in unit and ran enginge to get hot. Finally put vinegar only in sprayer and shoot into pee-hole while engine was hot and let sit for 10 minutes. Put engine back together and worked. Vinegar breaks up deposits...worth a try before taking to shop.
After removed the lower unit pump by overheat, I seen a horizontal and vertical movement of the shaft and move the shaft clock or counterclock wise feel a hard gear (mercury 200hp 2004 2 stroke) Are movement is correct or something happen there.
thaNK you for that helping info. man know I now how my idiot friend fucked my boat up !!!! know I just took my 115 mercuy apart .. it has a broken piston and I had to look for as how it happened and yes there it was the impelor was all mest up ... if any of you have the 1983 mercury 115 motor guide i realy apprisiate if you sent it to me via e-mail cause I cant find mine and I ccannot realy afford it than you thats why i'm doing it my self....
you made many mistakes... first of all you have to put forward gear otherwise it's difficult to put back the lower unit, then you have to take off the mile hose behind the impeller pump and not all the hose from top, you put the gasket wrong it goes under the metal one and then another on top. after all these, you have to grease all bolts nuts and drivers and finally put silicon between exhaust and impeller for this model.. and much more sorry but this is how it works....
Thanks for the Information! i need to do this to my 07 Merc. Verado 150. Would you say everything would be the same on a 4 stroke?? I heard you need to drain the oil?
did u find out which way to turn it? does the motor need to be in reverse to change impellar? do you have to replace oil? would a merc 9.9 four stroke be any different to change impellar? should you replace water pump at the same time as impellar?
Very nice video. I have a merc 150 from 1993. I have never changed the impeller before. What did you do with all the wires that came out when you removed the lower unit.? Thanks from Denmark!
I have replced the pump, greased the splines and have tried to insert the shaft back into the engine housing but get stuck about 2 inches from flush. I removed it in neutral plus I have rotated the shaft incrementally with no effect. Any suggestions?
the wire has a disconnect point inside the engine i had to pull it apart. after you disconnect...... tie a fishing line to the wire leading to your lower unit. as you pull the lower unit off ..let the cable slide thru the shaft. when your done... slowly fish the line back thru the shaft and connect again .. i havent had any problem with this.

@editboi hello you seem educated on outboard motors. I have a question I was told I needed to change my lower unit seal, is it the seal around the water pump, or are there more seals other than those around the pump? Thanks in advance.
I have merc 1995 150 hp . that really helped me how to change my impeller pump, but I ran into problem after the changout. After changing the impeller, there is a good amount of water pressure seen in my water pressure gauge like around between 5-10 psi what is used to be less than 3 at idle. The problem is the water coming out from the tell tail and not continious stream of water but like it hesitate when it pumping out every seconds like on off on off. Not really sure whats the problem.
Great video, I have a '78 Merc outboard 800, and your video worked well. What is the trick to the drive shaft going back in, I've given it many several turns, and I'm still 2 inches away?
Great info .. we need to know about that wire and where is it connected prior to pulling off the bottom portion of the motor. Does this need to be disconnected first? How do you feed that back into the motor?
hey jose, good info. i think i have the same make and model motor. your boat even looks like mine, a 21' pro-line sport. anyhow, does this motor have a poppet valve?
yesterday me and dad was out on our 19 foot nitro with 150 on a 80000 acre lake and it ran fine to the spot we wanted to go to so we dicied to move and no water persure and motor was over heating badly and its a 3 year old motor and y would water pump go out?
well 3 years isnt uncommon for a pump to wear down, especially if the motor sees a lot of use, water pumps can fail for many of reasons, you can catch something over your intake vents and not have adequate water supply, you may be in a silty lake which can be ard on the impeller, salt water without a flush afterwards, you may have hit a little bit of sand and thats probably the worse for an impeller... these are just a few reasons why u may have burnt your impeller, changing it is easy tho :)
yo dude nice one,,the metal thing you spoke of is a anode, you forgot to mention about the seized bolts that ring and break, and about one zillion things that can go wrong, alice in wonderland could do this in a perfect world, iam going to post some real life outboard work soon, drills ,chisels, and hammers are all involved...ye real life MAN,,,,back to the office dude, have some T
I was out on my boat last summer when the overheat alarm fired off a long beeeeeeepppp. After talking to a few marine mechanics and seeing some how to youtube videos we decided to go ahead and change the water pump and thermostat. if this isnt a real life scenario for you please tell me what is ? and as far as a zillion things going wrong ... well...i guess we'll have to wait for your videos.
CJ...I recently bought a '88merc from a guy that hadnt been ran in about 6 years. I couldn't get it started when I first tried but I have since taken the cabs off and cleaned them up and that did the trick. Also check that you have a good fuel supply to your pump and that your pump is working good. If you do get it to run good, buy some "Seafoam" and mix it up in your fuel and run in through your first tank. It will help flush out any little things you may have missed. GOOD LUCK!!
Okay I'm sitting here witha 1984 50 horse power mercury and I can't get it to start, been taking it apart changed the spark plugs and the outboard but it's not getting gas I think is the problem. It turns over but wont start. Anyone have a suggestion if you do then message me.
I have an old mercury 35hp, the tail just wont come off. I have taken off all the screws/bolts and taken of the shift thing that is located behind the carb.
The lower unit has come off for about 1 inch but wont come any further down. What should I try next? thanks all
Removing gearboxes off old mercury engines used to be a nightmare, much like the problem you are having. This video shows the long driveshaft when the gearbox is removed. These were made of steel in 1976 and earlier. They would rust solid into the crankshaft spline. To test this remove your spark plug leads tap a couple of wedges into the 1" gap between the gearbox and the mid section. Then turn the flywheel. If it goes tight as you apply pressure to the wedges, your splines are seized together.
Your video shows the water pump gaskets being installed in the wrong order. The last gasket fitted, goes underneath the stainless steel wear plate and the first one on top of it. The correct gasket allows the impeller to spin freely. The way you have them will only lead to premature impeller and possible engine failure. Best to pull the box back off and do it again.
I have 1995 Mariner 150 that I would like to change the water pump and thermosat in the spring as a PM along with a tune up, similiar set up between merc and mariner should I assume?
the trasnmission rod goes back in the way it came out.the wire has a disconnect point. before we removed the lower unit we tied some fishing line to the disconnect point so that when we remove the lower unit we can fish the wire back in.
My Optimax 150 occasionally overheats, but only when going 7-10 mph for extended periods of time (about 5 minutes). Other than that it runs perfect. Is that indicative of an impeller issue?
Hi how are you...i have a question...once i go faster around half troutle and go back a little since started planing and i will for a longer period of time some times starts a short beep continues and goes a long one and then shots off sometimes does it sometimes does not, i ve checked the gear lube container and its full but a looses i have to fill the half to up every 5 weeks..what this mean a leak or regular consume? its an 05 mariah low hrs
Anyone doing this needs to know 1 major important detail alot of people don't show in their clips. well 3 years isnt uncommon for a pump to wear down, especially if the motor sees a lot of use, water pumps can fail for many of reasons, you can catch something over your intake vents and not have adequate water supply, you may be in a silty lake which can be ard on the impeller, salt water without a flush afterwards, you may have hit a little bit of sand and thats probably the worse for an impeller... these are just a few reasons why u may have burnt your impeller, changing it is easy tho :)

Hi,
I have an old mercury 35hp, the tail just wont come off.

Nice job, that will definitely help me to do my Chrysler 70hp this spring.
mrwiggles2 3 years ago
don't run it again until you have performed this repair,,sounds like your impeller is destroyed, therefore no water flowing through the block.

Great job except no mention of the transmission rod and how it hooks back into the lower unit. Also how long is that wire????
ttopflyer 3 years ago
the trasnmission rod goes back in the way it came out.the wire has a disconnect point. before we removed the lower unit we tied some fishing line to the disconnect point so that when we remove the lower unit we can fish the wire back in.
editboi 3 years ago
Where is the disconnect point on that wire? It'd be great to see a video of that.
Great videos by the way, very helpful!
arjayache 2 years ago
i believe that was actually a water tube and not a wire. if so, it went to the speedometer.

My Optimax 150 occasionally overheats, but only when going 7-10 mph for extended periods of time (about 5 minutes). Other than that it runs perfect. Is that indicative of an impeller issue?
Redneckbakkie 3 years ago
if your alarm goes off single long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppp
everytime you run your engine it means your running a little hot check or replace impeller, thermostat.
