People on both party sides refuse to believe that a candidate on their side could be wrong about any question. They already have it in their head to back up their party before they hear and issue or debate. So when he gives this awful response, they overlook the fact that he avoided the question for the sake of their party appearing correct. No one in congress is a "maverick" (dem or rep) because you wouldn't make it that far being a "maverick"
