It's weird...I first got this album on cassette with the third through fifth songs listed here in a different sequence (More Fool Me, THEN Battle, THEN Firth). Sounds foreign listening to those songs in this order when playing the album on the reissued CD!! But still a joy...
@shwaaank : I've had this album on CD for fifteen years. It's just...do I wanna buy it again for the even-better bit depth? I did it before for George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" so I'll probably do it again for the progressive rock years of Genesis because the songs of those years have far too rich a sound to not want to hear it all :-)
Eliot. Dopo la loro Progressive, il vuoto.
Prog fans have debated x decades over which of these 2 works is to be considered the best "Prog Album O A T": CTTE or this one. But in my opinion, despite the fact of been 2 albums supposedly from the same genre of music (Prog or Experimental can't b a genre), they're so different and with their own very characteristic beauties and strengths that I can't really find a parameter to base a fare and reasonable judgement, unless you go to other factors such as the virtuosity in the interpretation

I truly envy "that" Genesis' fan that can enjoy Cinema Show while taking a shower with his significant other or a love making session with "Visions of Angels". . It's really getting boring shower sex with the Brazilian or Dodo or any of those other progmantico (Prog romantico) Collins' songs
What can I do Abby? I don't think conversion is an option for neither one of us.
The Battle Of Epping Forest is so underestimated. In the sense, it's everything that was Gabriel's era in Genesis. Not the best piece of their music, but full of richness and artistic style.
God. I played this album on vinyl when i was 16yrs old.........a great prog masterpiece,-
i was a long blonde haired young man back then with a lonely acceptance of having a soul.....in particular the track ''a firth of fifth'' carried me away to dimensions that i loved but never completely understood......i then moved to punk & alternative music , but still love this album as much as ''king crimzon'' ''red album'' (in particular the song ''starless'' rock on !! -mark :)
IMO, Prog induced itself into a coma for a few years in order to survive the rest of the 70's, which it did, and we see later the re-surging of the genre in the 80's, now without the stigmatization it got in the prior decade. It became cool to like and play Prog. Don't know if it has ever been like that.
Btw, does anybody know what happened with its alleged murderer? (probably killed itself, the fucker)
Cant get enough of Pete Gabriel era Genesis. Lived it in my teens, then kinda left prog rock behind for punk, indie, techno, dance, electro, dubstep etc. then recently - right back here! Like finding an old friend you lost touch with. If your lucky enough to get this stuff in your teens it's indelibly there in your psyche for ever. Tingling as I listen to FirthofFifth right now... ahhhhhhhhhh. These guys just KNEW! Shame what happened to Phil Collins though :\
Genesis downgraded from being a priest o musicology to a lapdog of the priest. It is a fairy tale about a magician who chose to be a hampster in a golden cage instead of an eagle on a snow-capped tree. Sad and dramatic collapse of the genius behind the group that vanished by 1978. In the same way a toothless hag looks at her teen portrait with a smile of an imecile. "That was you, Dorris, and look at what became of you..." Unlike Dorris, they did it to themselves. Age had nothing to do with it.
ok since you put it that way u have a point, and i admitt he did cheapen him/themselves in the 80s with the comercialism, , but as far as talent goes phil is rite up there also peter gabrial, fantastic, i even liked some of his newer stuff, sledgehammer, dont hate me i love peters voice in that song and the way he sings it more than the actual lyrics, thanks bud good
this was one of my first albums when i was 16 that was 40 years ago and it still gives me listening enjoyment, how ever you guys are running down phil collins and i wont have it, no one who knows talent would ever slam phil, hes a fucken musical geneius, sure some of his stuff was a bit on the edge but he has a great voice and is a fantastic drummer, any music is someones cup a tea somewhere so dont diss music u dont like, like its no good, to some it may be the shit, think about it bone heads.
@1budgood No one is saying he's not a musical genius (when he wanted) and one of the best drummers ever. And yes, any music is someone's cup of tea, but not ALL music is good or equally composed to challenge our perceptiveness, as an art form. And only a few of us can see it that way That's why we're here listening to this album and not in a Gaga video right?
What we discuss here, is the waste of talent this band became when they decided to do what they did half way into their careers
SEBTP is the best thing in the world! let alone best album. No doubt about it as far as I'm concerned.
After years of listening to a burned CD I decided it's time to by my own copy.
Getting to the point: I was disappointed by the "2008 digital remaster and stereo mix" version (that's what I found). I usually don't even notice minor editing nuances but here I was really itched by the way this "remastering" kind of messed it up.
I dunno, Maybe I didn't give it a chance. For your consideration.
@vivelavidarocka Wow, how do you know what I Iisten to? :o) I must admit now, that I like Genesis(and this song too), I was just joking, funny how you all jumped on me :)
@joshua1ba I was actually stating that it is a shame that OTHER ARTISTS in 2011 don't make music like this anymore... but it's just a misunderstanding i guess ;) :D
I do like "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" better with Gabriel singing. Saw them when they came to Verizon center, in Wash. DC and the Collins rendition was not as good in my opinion.
I guess I am in the minority, but I like Genesis with both Gabriel and Collins. The later stuff of Genesis with Phil was not as good (everything after the Genesis album in 1984), but some of the songs were ok. Most of the albums after Genesis weren't that bad except the one they did not release in the US released in the late nineties, that one was pretty terrible, but Collins was not part of that one.
@lammterra Not necessarily.... I know what you mean. How come didn't happened with Zappa, Davis, Ponty, Corea, Mozart and others. They were committed for life to excellence and uniqueness ( not to the dollar)
Maybe (just maybe) they ran out of ideas to offer between each other. But then you split from the group, and keep doing "your thing"
"Hey guys: I've got an idea for a song: starts like this: TA ra ra ra ra TA ra ra ra ra ra TA TA (Invisible Bullshit's beginning chords)
Peter interrupts: "I'm not singing this crap. Keep that shit for your solo albums, Phil. We do REAL MUSIC in this band." (throws the paper he was handed by Collins)
Oh, sorry Peter.... (retrieves the paper from the trash can, walks away in shame and quietly sits behind the drums)
@dynmohum ...but Patrick Bateman, Collins and Gaga refused to renounce to their first one, and he had to pull the trigger....the world was a better place since then....and Gabriel could make that movie he wanted, and the idea of a musical perished with Collins.
Fun fact: While I was playing around with my guitar I noticed that the riff at 0:50 is actually based on the Locrian scale, played on 3 different octaves. The Locrian scale was, traditionally a garbage scale, and many classical composers wanted to get rid of it, it was that hard to make anything of it. It is use alot in heavy metal music.
My point? whoever wrote that riff is very gifted.
@glaxko2 I dont think its actually in Locrian. Most of the song sounds very natural, its a standard major mode from what I can tell it's just that the second and third chord in the verse have augmented intervals in them. if we knew what key it was in and what the chords are, we could tell if it was originally written in Locrian, or simply (as I suspect) Ionic that doesn't start on "do." Of course I could always be wrong.
@Artemissa1965 Genesis isnt really melancholic, maybe this song, but listen to The Knife, Watcher of the Skies, Get em out by Friday, maybe a few more.
excelent, beautiful, unique, one of the best recordings in the history. thank you very much!! please, check my videos of my band Marania if you can, and let me know your opinnion. once again thanks.

Damn, this is good! If I close my eyes I'm right back in 1973 - Lights off, laying face up on the floor inches from a pair of bass-reflexes, trying to follow Phil in the Epping Forest! Hell, those were the days - you're tellin' me!
One of the best albums of its time. One of the few where every song was good from cover to cover. Was very popular in the music stores. I bought one when it came out. Still one of my favorites after all these years.
I remember how many times I passed up buying some of this early Genesis. What a fool I have been. I mean the earliest album I had was wind and wuthering. But wow....great stuff on these early albums!!
@period187 Same here. Graduated high school in 1980 in NJ. All we knew was Bruce Springsteen then. Luckily the juniors and seniors of my college fraternity in Philadelphia exposed me to new music like Genesis. Studied endlessly to Trick of Tail and Wind & Wuthering with headphones. However never explored the Gabriel years of Genesis even though I bought Gabriel solo albums. Catching up later in life. Easier with postings like this on YouTube.
You Were Here" Pink Floyd

@vivelavidarocka Two words: Peter Gabriel
GeoJoe2000 1 month ago
@GeoJoe2000 Imagine this:
Year 1986. Peter's still in the band

@vivelavidarocka Phil should have stuck to drums.

dynmohum 2 months ago

My point? whoever wrote that riff is very gifted.
glaxko2 3 months ago
@glaxko2 I dont think its actually in Locrian. Most of the song sounds very natural, its a standard major mode from what I can tell it's just that the second and third chord in the verse have augmented intervals in them. if we knew what key it was in and what the chords are, we could tell if it was originally written in Locrian, or simply (as I suspect) Ionic that doesn't start on "do." Of course I could always be wrong.

I find Genesis music beautiful, though deeply melancholic.
Artemissa1965 3 months ago
@Artemissa1965 Genesis isnt really melancholic, maybe this song, but listen to The Knife, Watcher of the Skies, Get em out by Friday, maybe a few more.

But wow....great stuff on these early albums!!
period187 4 months ago
@period187 Same here. Graduated high school in 1980 in NJ. All we knew was Bruce Springsteen then. Luckily the juniors and seniors of my college fraternity in Philadelphia exposed me to new music like Genesis. Studied endlessly to Trick of Tail and Wind & Wuthering with headphones. However never explored the Gabriel years of Genesis even though I bought Gabriel solo albums. Catching up later in life. Easier with postings like this on YouTube.
