@TheVLtor Its strange, I learnt that Fruits and vegetables are the most healthful foods one can eat when I was In School for Nutrition 8 years ago. Since then I have eaten a diet consisting entirely of Fresh Raw Fruits and Vegetables with some Nuts/seeds and have only seen increases in every measurable faucet of health. After havin been tested extensively by 2 MD's (3 years in a row) with full blood n urine work, 2 PT's/DC's each saying I have the best results they have ever seen. Bunk? hahah :)
I think it is a disservice to the cause of veganism and health to tell people that they don't need to worry about protein. Most plant foods do not provide the essential amino acids in the proportion in which we need them in order to make our own protein. Jack Norris has recommendation for minimum amounts, and he's discovered that vegans who do not worry about protein are likely to be deficient in lysine. The solution? Less grains, more legumes.
@Klytemnest It all depends upon what type of vegan diet you follow. True if your diet is based around Cooked Grains and Processed vegan foods there are predicable issues. On the other hand if your diet is made up entirely of or mostly of a variety of Whole Fresh Ripe Raw Organic Fruits and Vegetables your Golden. Many Fruits n nearly all vegetables contain al 8 of the essential Amino acids we need to make protein structures.
@TheRogueMonk: try cooking beans a bit longer, perhaps 80-90 minutes; that should help. Peas and lentils (the other vegan protein superheroes) are easier to digest. Also, pistachios and pumpkin seeds are a decent source of protein, and more to the point, lysine, the amino acid we are most likely to be deficient in. Crimini mushrooms are 37% protein!
why does all the plant based foods haves o little protein then... when you read its like 13 pr 100 grams if you rlucky... meat says it has 19 to 20 .. so is it strange i choose meat? its easier ..
@TheRogueMonk You are still caught in the belief system that we need lot's of protein. When you eat meat you are getting second hand protein. Where does the cow get it's protein? From the grass in the form of amino acids. We can do the same. Get the raw materials from the plants to build our own protein. A balanced high raw vegan diet will give you everything you need. Fruits vegetables nuts and seeds, there is your meal plan! : )
@BeYourPotential that is so general... i want a real meal plan...
also a lot of people have allergy to peanuts ... i am not sure if i have... the amount of protein pr serving of vegetarian food is SO MUCH you get full before getting that amount of protein .
are you suggesting we need half the amount of protein that they recommend because you mean that the little protein in vegeterian foods can account for the large amount of meat protein?
@TheRogueMonk I am saying that you don't need any protein. There is plenty of amino acids in fruits and vegetables that will allow the body to build it's own protein. A daily green smoothie with 500gms of spinach or other green leaf will be more than enough.
@BeYourPotential a meal plan that will make me understand... this does not... you buy 600 g of meat it says 19 gram of protein .. that makes sense to me that i understand...
but like a fruit? it has like 2 grams of protein? common..
@BeYourPotential i have another question is it true that beans are not health food? i keep reading beans are bad for you and that they are not health food and that they contain toxins and they are meant for animals and that they can injure or harm your cells
is this true? ... yet i keep reading its a staple food in many countries? i am mostly talking about kidney beans....
@nextinline777 i think i am sensetive to beans... cause it gets hot or something... now i dont have anything to replaace it.. can you help me putt a good vegan diet high protien vegan diet ?
i am so new to all these... all i know is that plant foods are very low in protein
@TheRogueMonk Blessings :) The trick is to look at protien per calorie, not per Weight. Fruits and veg contain more than enough viable protein when you consume enough to fulfil your caloric needs, this is why Carb Based Raw foodists eat such High volumes of food. @Klytemnest When you eat a healthful raw vegan diet of a range of Fresh Fruits, Vegetables nuts and seeds you do not run into those AA problems. This is a reason why a Simple low fat raw diet is lightyears ahead of a cooked vegan diet
@ck1nsh so what do you sugest for me to do? ... well fruit are ver filling... anyu food that fills the stomach too much will make you fat or atleast troubled...
i know that nuts contain good protien and calories... but fruits?
i truly want to learn to eat green diet but its so new and ironically that is exactly what we lack these days.... we should be expertes at eating green why are we not? it was the first things on earth... still we are only experts at meat .. what is pasta and spagheti
@TheRogueMonk Blessings, myself I follow a High fruit low fat 100% raw vegan program filled with lots of greens. On average I eat 6 - 8 lbs of fruit and 1 - 4 lb of veggies per day. Ive followed this for nearing 8 years and had blood work 3 years in a row. Each and ever Doctor, PT or Naturopath I have seen has all told me after extensive testing that I had the best test results they have ever seen. Fruits on average contain 4 - 8 % protein, or rather Amino acids, the Building Blocks of protein.
@TheRogueMonk only if its free man.. only if its free....
i cant afford to eat so much fruit as you do man.. fruit here is not cheap :(
but you eat too much fruit lLOL if you eat anything in that quantity you get protein.. but are you against vegetables? i dont see you eat too much vetgetables... ? i thought vegetables is easier to eat ..
please someoen help me make a diet with vegan for protein.. something that is easy to understand ... and eat... all these videos talk about it but never actually give us a meal plan
@TheRogueMonk You could read the 80-10-10 book from Dr. Graham, that will clarify a lot of what you're asking. Chris follows that diet, the Low Fat Raw Vegan, which consists mostly of fruits to get enough calories per day. By eating fruit the amount of food eaten is less than the amount of veggies you would need to eat to get the same amount of calories. Fruit is the star of this diet, although vegetables too. In any case you need to eat very large amounts of food. Fats are avoided
We as a family turned vegetarian 4 months ago. My son (5) had to have a blood test for other medical reasons. When we returned for the results before I had the chance to tell her of the change, she read through his blood results, she said his protein is perfectly in the middle, exactly where it is supposed to be. I was delighted of course. My ulcerative colitis has gone and my husband has dropped one of his bp tabs. None of us are overweight and never have been. I feel 10 years younger too!

@TheVLtor .. that anyone is spreading misinformation. There is already an incredible amount of misinformation being circulated within this topic merely due to the interests of the meat, poultry and dairy industries... so do your own research, and constantly question what you hear. Peace.
@TheVLtor .. other species do"? There is really only one way to get your protein quota - take either vegetable or animal protein, break it down into amino acids and then rebuild them inside a cell in the mitochondria into the protein you need. there no advantage whatsoever in animal protein since all protein gets broken down anyway into amino acids - simple building blocks. Finally, I would like to say that in the world of health and biology, I would not be so quick to assume you know it all or.
@TheVLtor Merely because a cow has 4 stomachs does not imply their sole purpose is to derive the amount of protein it needs. From what I understand, the 4 stomachs are necessary to break down cellulose which we can't digest (it passes through our system as insoluble fiber). These complex polysaccharides break down into simple sugars. This is what I understand the purpose of the 4 stomachs to be. Now what exactly do you mean by "our human biology is not capable of deriving proteins the way the...
@TheVLtor Totally agreed. Where do these vegans get their pseudo-science from? It's simply horrible how they come up with false information and make everyone believe it's true.
pseudo-science? There have been many scientific dietary studies done by many Doctors and scientists that prove the benefits of a vegan/plant based diet. If you would like to educate yourself on the subject there are many sources to view just by using google search. May I suggest: American Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Oxford Journal: Cancer risk of heterocyclic amines in cooked foods: an analysis and implications for research, etc. Peace.
@BeYourPotential What makes me think I'm right? One of them is my degree in biology. Read peer reviewed scientific journals on the subject, and you will find that there is essentially no debate over the fact that the human stomach more readily digests animal (meat) proteins than plant proteins.
It doesn't mean you shouldn't be a vegan or vegetarian. But don't turn a blind eye to some of the issues those choices present. Eating meat poses issues too.
@TheVLtor Interesting perspective. What I notice is that generally the more meat a person eats the more unhealthy they are and the less meat consumed the more healthy. There are of course exceptions, but this can be seen across all cultures world wide. Okinawans, Sardinians and Hunzas who all eat mostly plant based diet with minimal meat and they live the longest boasting the most centurians.
@BeYourPotential What I will agree with is that, in general, the average western diet is composed of entirely too much animal derived protein. What you will notice among the populations you cite are food cultures that feature a plant based diet augmented with fish.
I would say for the those not ready to take to leap to vegetarianism or veganism, a more realistically balanced diet is a good goal. Contemporary intake of animal derived protein is very much higher than historical levels.
Of course the negative to my just posted comment is that fish populations are *not* sustainable. While the ideal diet may be that of Okinawans or Sardinians, our commercial fisheries are, again, not sustainable.
To speak quite frankly, I don't know what the answer is. I would posit increasing entomophagy as perhaps the most viable of options, but popular resistance to acultural norms is likely to win out over pragmatism.
@BeYourPotential What a bunch of crap! Most of those tribes eat more meat than the average american. Animal products are essential for good health. You took the China Study too seriously, did you not? I'll say this once, and I hope I won't have to say this again : correlation is not causation. Most people that eat more meat also smoke more, drink more, do less exercise, eat poor-quality meat, ...
I personally eat a meat-only diet to cure me. I got sick on a vegan diet because of my mold allergy.
there are no "issues" with being a healthy vegan. i suspect you have an agenda.
why spread confusion? he did not say we digest plant proteins easier than animal protein.. he said amino acids.. you do know they are not the same, right? Amino acids don't need digestion. They are absorbed in the small intestine without need for HCl and proteolytic enzymes in the stomach. Fruit is very low in protein but has plenty of aminos per calorie. Perhaps you need to go back to school.
I love it when people ask me that....I just ask them back...."Where do cows, chickens, and pigs get their protein from?" They usually look confused and you can see them really start to think. :D
