  • Pryor's partner in "Soul Club" is Louis Gossett Jr.

  • David Cassidy had a great voice!

  • More cowbell, Shirley!

    Many Thoughts.

  • I recall that during this episode, "Soul Club", David (looking for a way to connect musically with the black neighborhood with a new song) said with a straight face to the two club owners (played by, of all people, Richard Pryor and Lou Gossett), "I'm looking for something with an AFRO beat!" I was nine when this episode came out, and I still laughed my ass off at that line! Ah, so innocently, deliciously patronizing! Gotta love TV in the awkward late 60s/early 70s!

  • @howmer001 If Pryor was ever going to drop a "m*****f*****" during the taping, THAT was the point I'd choose for him! This song is good, but it's about as "afro" as "White Christmas" . . . and I like the fact that, apparently, Chuck D and a couple of S1Ws travelled back in time to appear in this scene . . .

  • @howmer001 - I saw rhis episode in reruns on Nickelodeon late one night with my sister, and when he said that about the "afro beat" my sister and I looked at each other in utter disbelief. I thought I was the only person who remembered that line!! I don't know what "Beat"this song has, but I would have to say that "afro" is not it!

  • @TypesALot It's so randomly, off-the-cuff offensive, it's actually hilarious! It was funny then, but even funnier now in this day and age! He's lucky Richard Pryor didn't have any pull in the industry back then (that's apparent by the fact that Pryor's appearing on, of all things, "The Partridge Family") - that line would have been unceremoniously dropped ASAP. I guess Richard needed the money too much to complain!

  • It's on of my fav Song from the Partridge and is so wonderful and peaceful to see all they Black and White, they Dance and sing together! David Cassidy is After Elvis for me the Most amazist singer! Danny Boneduce is so lovley and to smiling as Danny Partridge!Absolutly an excpirence to all of this Songs again to hear on a Trip in the 70's on the DVDs!:)

  • @Hummelchen1966 I was playing craps as Mohegan Sun in CT a few years ago; while I played some guy and his band were playing to a packed house on the casino's open center stage. The women there, mostly older, were going crazy. I turned to the guy next to me and said, "Those chicks are screaming like its David Cassidy out there!" He replied "It IS David Cassidy!" Didn't think much of him before, but he absolutely burned the joint down that night - Best version of "Gimme Shelter" I ever heard!

  • Hey, you can hear Susan. That's a first

  • Ah cool espisode-it was great viewing this again! Cool seeing Lou and Richard. Groovy soul tune as well!

  • love this song!!

  • richard pryor

  • As you see and hear, the original tv version was mixed differently and featured horns in the mix plus extended the song. Plus showed Richard Pryor and Louis Gosset Jr. dealing with the enemy in the crowd as the group is singing. the LP version is much shorter.

  • @punchcar Little known at the time this episode was made the head of the African Cultural Society is Herbert Jefferson, Jr, who is better know as Lt. Boomer from the original Battlestar Gallactica.

  • those were the days

  • I need more cow bell Shirley!

  • LOL - I remember when this came out! Love it still.

  • Look at how uncomfortable Shirley Jones is while being filmed surrounded by nonwhites and hippies. This is from the Partridge Family Show, but no amount of acting can hide the disgust on her face. Is she dead yet?

  • @polishkatie a lot of screen gems/columbia tv shows were touching on racial issues. this was their attempt. pretty good for 1970-71. and got a alternative version of the song than the LP. I guess the episode woke Shirley up...LOL

  • @polishkatie I don't see any overt discomfort. They are all wearing the same stage smiles that they do during all of their performances. I don't know what Shirley Jones' social views were, but I don't think it's accurate to say that they leak onto her face during this short clip.

  • @polishkatie Yes,she was on Joy Behar's show recently. She has some very talented grandkids too.

  • @polishkatie

It's called acting, hon. If you ever saw the entire episode, you might be able to figure it out. The look on Shirley's face at the beginning of the clip has to do with the context of the episode, not any personal feelings of her own. Do you believe that the actors who play murderers on crime shows actually killed someone too?

  • I saw David when I was 6, Thanks Mom

  • @EltownProductions lucky. I had a crush on David and Shaun. I saw Shaun when i was 14.

  • ok david can have Bandala but i want Susan!

  • Richard Pryor and Louis Gossett Jr.

  • Richard Pryor was the guy in the blue shirt.

  • I agree. These were songs by as far as I have heard by studio musicians, but so what. It sounds fantastic. I love the music.
