  • Mm i have a question about tip#1, I don't get why japanese restaurants give a spoon with the miso soup then?;o

  • More tips!!

  • I'm gonna go do EVERYTHING you said not to do... Ha!

  • You have no idea how hungry I am after watching this! It's currently 10:35am here. Do you think I could get away with eating sushi this early? :)

  • @andyknowsyou It's never too early for sushi. ;-)

  • @onepov Awesome! :D Also I learned a lot of new things about Japanese food etiquette. Five new things to be exact. Great vid :)

  • My favorite quote from this vid - "a little piece of me dies every single time you try to use knife and fork for sushi" I agree in 100% :)

  • It's supposed to be stick a fork on a salmon not the other way around

  • Well instead of telling us what not to do, can you get off your high horse and tell us what we are suposed to do please.

  • @alicerose192 I see that maybe you're frustrated and didn't realize that the video not only included what you shouldn't do but for most of the points, also included the appropriate alternatives.

  • @onepov Sorry, I am frustrated by this but there are still many things he brought up and didn't tell us what to do istead. Hence the reason I'm still frustrated.

  • @alicerose192 There's only 5 points that were made in the video. Only one wasn't addressed - "Don't pass your food chopstick to chopstick" , Answer: Pass the plate instead.

What question are you hoping to get answered?

  • @onepov Alright then, I don't understand why Japanese resturants would suply miso soup with a (not the American type) spoon if we are not supposed to use it.

In Australia, at Sushi bars, when a Sushi roll has been made, they cut it in half so there is no way I could fit a 10CM roll of sushi in my mouth in one go. I couldn' teven do it in 2 bites like he said to so what is the correct way to eat it?

Also he say not to put soy sauce

  • @alicerose192 directly onto your sushi and that they give you a little dipping bowl. Well I've never been given one and I eat alot of sushi!!

(my post didnt fit in one)

  • @alicerose192 I see where you might be getting confused. What is traditionally provided by the chef/server/restaurant are not things you've been getting.

You should be getting a soy sauce dish or something similar where you can put the sauce into.

I don't know any real sushi chef who would give a roll uncut, unless the customer asked. That's very weird and not in any way traditional. The correct way to eat that would be to send it back and ask them to cut it properly. (in my opinion).

  • @onepov Alright I shall do that. Thankyou very much :)

  • what if you eat a big roll in two bites, not swallowing on the first bite.

  • Yay! I already knew these Japanese etiquettes :) It's all common sense to me and am baffled when I see these rules broken haha!

Makes me want to go back to Japan and have more of the unagi and sushi this chef prepared for us (he complimented me on my Japanese and wondered where I learned it hehe).

    Great job on the video!

  • Qt Ken: How bout the Temaki (Cone) Sushi's? Is it possible to eat those in one bite?

  • @pualani No, cones are not one-bite portions. Though I'd love to see you try. :-)

  • @onepov hehehehe..no that would be too difficult! Have fun in LA! If I still lived there..I would have shown you around the area. But if ever your in the SF/Bay Area..let me know Ken.

  • i'm soooo glad i already follow all of his Japanese etiquette rules. =D

  • So, how bad is it to eat the pickled ginger WITH the sushi? I'm given to understand that it's meant to be a palate cleanser, but I like to put little pieces of it on each roll. Is it "die a little death" bad, or "I will silently judge you, but whatever" bad, or somewhere in between?

  • @wavesandmoon I will admit that I enjoy my ginger and have mixed it with my sushi. But you're right, it's meant to cleanse the palate. Doing it certainly is not as universally bad as the chopsticks-to-chopsticks rule or the soy sauce pool. I think I would mark that down as more of a "fushion" sushi decision as people could request ginger in their sushi as well. And it's a vegetable. So you're still ok in my books.

  • I wonder what your hair looks like, not spiked?

  • @HesseKun It looks horrible. And I did a video a long time ago to show it. Look for one titled "hair, hat, and li'l lie"

  • HOUSEROLL IN ONE BITE!!!

  • LOL . I ate sushi with a fork and a knife xD

i'm still embarrased, but i couldn't hold chopsticks correctly.

  • You should've added a "The more you know" sign in there. ;)

I appreciate the tips and will in no doubt remember them when I finally get to eat in a Japanese restaurant. I've already began to practice my chopsticks technique with my drumsticks (I have no real chopsticks, but if I manage to do it with drumsticks, I'll be able to do it with anything :P)

  • @echomiketwo If the chopsticks actually lodged into the wall, it would've been epicly awesome! :-)

  • The sushi rice breaks up anyways when you dunk it in the soy sauce for extended period of time.

  • i've tried eating the bigger sushis in one bite... and i ended up almost throwing up.. =_=

  • @FroggieReturns That's unfortunate but I can't help but to find that a bit amusing. :-P

  • @onepov i easily "wanna throw up" (what is the word called in english, when you almost throw up, but dont?).. i wanna throw up every time i brush my teeth... =_= and really throw up when i hear, smell or see people throw vomit... that's such a pain...

  • Thanks for this video!

I actually work in a japanese resturant in Norther Minnesota (weird since I'm Korean, eh), but I feel the need to post this on our Facebook account, or make my own... hmmm..it may happen... Thank you, friend!

  • @mlipski213 Thanks! And I guess you know what I mean since you work in one.

  • This is awesome!!! Thumbs Up!!!! My Favorite Japanese Canadian!

  • @HesseKun Awww thanks! And I'll still feel good if I find out that I'm the only Japanese-Canadian you know. lol

  • im hungry now.. fuck pawlow

  • thumbs up if u saw Ken in "Untold stories of the E.R".. hahaha i was watching it and i was like.. mmmm looks like..onepov.. then he ran in and the camera was focused on him.. i was like.. "ZOMG.. that is him!!".. hahahahaha..

  • @musicbuff1992 Yup that was me. :-) I'm on two separate episodes of that show. In both I run into a scene so not sure which ones you saw. Funny that you randomly saw me on tv though.

  • @onepov the first one was uhm.. the woman who had a baby and then had seizures and they ran out of magnesium or somethin.. and then other one..was uhm.. with a woman who was a burn victim and she had a valve replacement or somethin.

  • @musicbuff1992 Oh! You watched both episodes. :-) I haven't even been able to catch them yet.

  • I could eat sushi all day and not feel stuffed! Never doused soy sauce on my rolls anyway!

  • I like pouring soysauce all over my ramen. And sometimes with my donburi.

Anyway, most of those dining etiquettes are only observed in special occasions.

Sometimes during lunch, me and my classmates pass on food with our chopsticks.

Does that make us bad Japanese people? lol ^^,

And YES, thank you very much for reminding everyone that sushi is meant to eat as whole. I hate seeing some foreigners eating it like a KFC chicken.

  • @kentaokabe I'm not sure of a "special occasion" when it's appropriate to ever pass food between chopsticks. It's like passing food between two forks.

lol - Did you know that KFC is a standard and expected food during the holidays in Okinawa? It's like a delicacy particularly during Christmas time.

  • @onepov Oh no, I did not mean it that way. I guess I used the wrong words. What I mean was, we pass food through our chopsticks (or with our chopsticks) to each others bowl/plate/bento. Like I get food from his/her bento or I pick food in my bento and pass it on her/him.

lol this Christmas my mom bought a KFC chicken bucket.

  • VERY USEFUL INFORMATION. Thanks! :)

  • Super funny stuff man :D

  • i use a fork. judge me.

  • @blankz121 Your wish has been granted. You have now been judged.

  • @onepov dammit. thats not how this was was suppose to work.

  • @blankz121 LOL

  • #2 what is the correct way? You said not to pick it up and pass it over to the other person Chopsticks... So what should I do?

  • @Chuckyboyboy Oh yeah. I actually cut out the "what to actually do" part of that section. You basically pass the plate over and let the other person grab the food with their own chopsticks (or fingers). That's the best (and most appropriate) way.

  • ONE MORE THING!

If you have a bowl of rice, do not stick your chopsticks in the bowl and leave them there! This is death in Japanese culture.

  • @MusicManiac0123 Yes, I know I didn't include that one. Maybe I'll do a follow-up vid with more to add to the list. :-)

  • when I was in Japan my host-family looked at me like I was a criminal when I poured soy sauce on my white rice as a side dish. They were like, " um... what are you doing?" and I was like, "what? Is this wrong?" "Yea. Yea, it's wrong."

oops. lol. Don't even get me started on the chopsticks sticking up in my food. You'd think I murdered their son.

  • @killakiki lol I love your host family story! :-)

  • Your way of explaining all this was really funny, haha!

  • I knew all these I am proud to say.

Though this video makes me sad for I haven't gone out for sushi recently. It is one of my favourite things to go out and eat.

  • @jaystreete How are you?! It feels like forever ago since we last spoke. Though I don't think we actually "spoke" to each other. But I feel like we did converse more in the past. Just sayin'. I hope you're well. :-) Maybe one day we'll go out for sushi together.

  • This is why i eat at an asian buffet with sushi :)

  • @MiN4meIzJay Yes, the buffet's do serve a particular purpose.

  • I almost never even dip rolls in soy sauce but if i get sashimi that gets covered in my little soy sauce wasabi mix.

  • @RainGlobule ...and *high five* for you. :-)

  • I break #3 and #5 because I want to enjoy 9 rolls in 18 bites or I won't get full and I don't get high quality sushi. Also, soy sauce is like ketchup for people who don't like their fries tasting like potatoes.

  • @Paruuparo Then people should just eat rice rolls and soy sauce. It'll be much cheaper than buying it with the fish. :-P

  • @onepov In a sense, but I'm biased. I usually just order California rolls, which are very, very tame compared to anything else and sometimes a little bit of soy sauce doesn't hurt. Heck, I'm a fan of Korean gimbap more than cali rolls and I dunk that in soy sauce more often when it shouldn't be. :x But this was certainly very informative, I'll keep this in mind next time I hit the buffets. :)

  • Hey! Where should I go for best sushi in Vancouver?

  • @DesiRockMetal Everyone keeps asking me that. lol Uh. I don't know what is the "best" because I often go to convenient places. I don't mind Kamei Royale on Burrard. But there's a place in Coquitlam by the mall that was really good, but I forget the name of the place. But in general I like going to the various izakaya's like Guu Gastown. Which places do you like?

  • sushi isnt crack

  • @danieltuent178 Actually sushi IS crack.

  • @drsheldoncooperftw who you telling? I love the spicy salmon roll with wasabi!

  • i want sushi NOW!!!!

  • @TheDKing67 I felt that way when I was editing it. :-P

  • shit i think i broke ever rule when i went to japan LOL!!

  • @deatharising And now you know how to mend the wounds when you go back.

  • Fantastic! <3

  • This looks totally shopped. I can tell.

And my sushi swims in soy sauce.

  • @ExplorationB And that's why we don't hang out anymore.

  • @onepov Okay totally have to go to your Parents restaurant for dinner then with Lance, the girls from the firm and you.

I'm going to request a fork, i'm going to pass you Sushi with my chopsticks and I am going to swim in soy sauce.

Well to be honest I will just eat sushi but whatevs. I am good at Sushi Eating.

  • @ExplorationB If you want to go on a road trip all the way to my parents' restaurant, you let me know.

  • o_o sorry lol.... i think i might of killed you the most D:

  • @1piecemage lol I forgive you.

  • Omg THANK YOU so much for this vid. I cringe when I see people eating japanese food wrong like that!

  • omg #5 pisses me off so much -_____-

  • @manga292 Thanks! We all love @gunnarolla. The song was Sneaky Snitch.
