Africa is a good example. We send food to countries that export food already, destroying their economy. We send money to corrupt generals and bureaucrat who simply send it to a swiss bank account. The people get nothing, and stay poor.
On the other hand, Microfinance, and Microinvestments are key. For a loan of $20 people can build a small business in the 3rd world, and repay the loan over time. This means millions of people become independent, and own their future, rahter than remaining poor.
It's an excellent, but theres no way huge corperations, who make money off those cars, and practicaly run this country, are ever going to let that happen
Apparently high speed trains have been fairly well tested by now. What about slow trains or slower trains? If i were taking a train ride i would not want it to be going too fast. Super fast is like "landing speed" but continually landing. Sooner or later something will happen with the track, which has to be absolutely idiot proof and maintanance free. i say get the energy agriculture cooking first and then everyone can benefit.
Watch the video of Lindsey Williams here on you tube. America has plenty of oil but we won't tap it because we need other counties (Saudi etc) to buy our T-bills (our debt). Job creation? We can't get the banks to disclose where all the last billions went. Bailout= America's fallout. When a bad business man runs a company down to the ground, do you offer him $ to keep going? No! Commonsense says..let him fail and a smarter man will pop up and make things right. Bailout is a scam.

Economics is the study of scarce resources with alternative uses. Those resources in a free society are allocated by prices based on supply and demand.
A discovery of iron in some mine may never reach the newspapers, but it would translate to lower prices of iron machinery in America.
Gov't trains take resources from where they would be use by individual decisions and force people to pay for them even if they never use them.

Forgot to mention - I'm a US citizen living in Europe for a decade and use the trains every chance I get because they kick ass and are better than driving / parking. But as I said, Europe is small. I agree about using more train systems. It is just a more efficient method of travel.
I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, which has one of the best transit systems in the world, and I never really felt that I "needed" a car. Once in a while I'd move or something and borrow a truck, but other than that I can get on just fine.
And all the buses in the city mostly run on electricity...Notto mention, no gas, no insurance, and getting there quicker while not contributing to congestion.
There is developing a caste system, the Washingtonians and the rest of us. I'll be damned if I vote for one candidate that gives one single more dollar to Washington, especially when Senate Majority Leader Reid talks about how the tourists smell, so that he can get more and more money expanding a $70M project into a $621M project. No more gov't employees, or gov't funding.
Great in theory, but as soon as government types, they'll destroy it into practice. There would be so much quid-quo pro going on in land deals it'd make your head spin. Sadly, it'd take a miracle for the gov't to head a project so big efficiently and lawfully.
I'm glad you point that out. Fortunately we can do exactly that in the ballot box. The gov't is not on our side. Picking up the NYT on the net, you'd be fascinated to find an article describing how Nancy Pelosi, a very important person as leader of the House of Reps, all bills signed into law originate from her, is trying to stamp out transparency today. Anything Obama will hope to sign will go through her, and she isn't even waiting for Obama to pass her bold new plan against America.
I buy the thought. The fact DENVER/Colorado has been getting lots of money for the same concept (for local transport) proves; The money won't make it to the needed cause. I think all it did was put new Mercedes in the drive ways of politicians. We need better people in charge. I would hate to see a civil war in order to change things. I do not wish to live in a CASTE SYSTEM! I am on the wrong end for that! Hard to tax the rich when they are in power!
Also this way instead of giving money to the top of the pyramid and hope that it trickles down it gives money to people through employment and the money goes up in the economy instead of trickling down.
Great idea. This is a very similar idea to what was done in the 1930s to get out of the great depression...the government invested in several huge building projects, such as the Hoover Dam, as a way to create a large number of jobs therefore boosting the economy. And the money is not lost since eventually these projects pay for themselves. Something like a new national train system would be both good for the economy and the environment and cost a small fraction of the banking bailout.
We had intra-urban rail systems in every city in America, but nobody used them... after GM conspired to buy out the rail lines and pull up the tracks. Face it, Americans love General Motors and love GM products. All hail mighty GM!
Absolutely. Many towns in my state have been trying to get the rails back for years, but the funds just aren't there to make it happen right now. Meanwhile, money on gas refinement and automobile manufacturing is still considered acceptable, though it's breaking the back of the transportation industry. I think it's time for a complete overhaul of the network and join the rest of the G8 countries.
Los Angeles used to have quite a network or train tracks until General Motors bought them up... legally. This can't be classified as corporatism. It's just pure capitalism.
You know it sound good but..... What about people like me who live in the mid-size city. I mean some stores are 4 miles from me and up to 30. Yes we do have buses but the only run 1 an hour and don't go to most of the city...I would love to lose me car if I could but I can't.
Great idea man. I'm more into your localized subway systems, that would be GREAT!!! But tunneling costs big bucks. So from tunnel to sky! El trains, or monorails that could be incorporated to match with current highways IE: straight down the median...
good idea, but im not sure how popular it will be, people really love cars, its like a ship(pirates of carabian) its a form of freedom, once u get ur lisence, you can go pretty much anywhere you want, on road, off road. but still good idea
Federal dollars go to support the highway system and the automotive industry. By relocating those funds, cities and states will have the opportunity to invest in light and high speed commuter rail systems. In my city, we have been trying to bring a rail plan closer to fruition for years and years- and the problem always comes down to prohibitive startup and construction costs- even though the end benefits would be overwhelming.
Im quite nervous about building a new rail system. While it would introduce more jobs, etc for the City, we haven't repaired nor improved what we already have.
That goes for the aged bridges, recalled vehicles, and other means of travel.
Mass transit is the main target for terrorists. Mass transit is avoided by a lot of people because of airborne transmitted diseases and traveling with hostile or rude individuals. I personally would not use it
Hi Proteanview, it's always nice to see your vids. I like the fact you have an open mind.
France's TGV system, is not soleley French anymore btw, it also connects Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Italy and links with Eurostar to Brittain.
Anyway: The TGV does not really contend with cars in the first place, it contends with airplanes. The quick boarding and speed of the train make the TGV faster then traditional medium distance airplane routes (1K-2K kilometers)
Once you go over medium distances, the airplane becomes faster again. The main source of passengers are buisness trips. Another factor = France started the TGV project, with taxmoney, and it made no profit for over a decade, something I can't forsee happening in the USA.
So linking cities, for the sake of linking them is not enough. You will have to redo your homework, and find which routes are possibly profitable, with the info I just gave you.
My only criticism is that too few cities are connected; given that transportation is one of the primary limiting factor to development of an area, the boost in potential outlined by this map is necessarily disadvantageous to smaller cities that would be key in helping widen the economic benefits of faster, more efficient transport.
I mean, not every train has to *stop* at a given station -- but the station should be there.
Most people don't want public transportation? What fairytale world do you live in? Anyone who has to balance a budget benefits greatly from public transportation, being able to eliminate vehicle expenses from your budget can be a godsend. Students, lower class people, even people from the upper classes would benefit greatly from this.
You're just spitting out the same old conservative propaganda. If you build a high-speed train network, it will cost significantly less for people to ride than the alternatives, and people will choose to ride it. On the other hand, we can pump money into the big three, which instead of being an investment, is more like pumping down the drain. We'll never see any of it again.
Maybe it might be cheaper; but, this country emphasizes freedom and being able to ride one's own transportation whenever one wants to wherever one wants is a major factor in that freedom equation.
Small agile up-start businesses can create huge amounts of wealth, taking in money and producing something worth 10 times as much. On the flip side, giant dying corporations like the big three are like black holes, sucking up huge sums of money and producing nothing in return for the unwilling investor.
...or SF to Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara, LA to OC, OC to San Diego, Detroit to Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, Dallas to New Orleans, Miami to Orlando...
SF to SC is less than a 2 hour drive, or 3 hour bus ride. I don't see a super train as necessary for that...I'm not sure about the rest, but it would certainly make more sense to stop at the maximum number of cities while still keeping the time a relevant factor. I would guess a project like this would require at least 1 city per state as the funds to build it would come from a federal coffer...
Great video, I agree 100 %. They should do the same for our rail system here in Canada. Our problem is that the freight haulers rule the lines so we get slow and low frequency passenger service. Rail in Europe and parts of Asia is amazing. The States for the most part dropped the ball on this one.
Yeah a highspeed connect for that line would be very nice. Currently it is more of a scenic/take your time route. A very nice trip for sure but pretty slow.
i could not agree more. one more thing that i must add though... if an investment like this goes into effect we have to have the new rails set at a different gauge so that no freight can use it. amtrak is often delayed, and it is almost always because a freight car is broke down or simply in the way at a yard.. i know because i got stuck this way on my way back to d.c. this morning.. as was the same a month ago going to denver. great idea. it would help greatly for everyone.
Nothing will replace cars as long as there is oil to profited from and to go to war for.
Too many people continue having ridiculously high income from it. They'll do anything to protect their source of money on the expense of people and planet, such is greed.
you also forget where are the poor gunna liv , if not there cars , god man get your prioritise right ,, , i hope one day to gain respect in the tray'la park if ,I could afford to live in one. ha,ha,ha
socialism, burn him at the cross, how can assholes feel good about them self unless there not screwing the poor and underprivileged ,,god, man get your mind right , whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaats uuuuuuuuuuuuup.
It seems like a good idea, but getting the right people to fund it would be a major challenge. I'm still wondering where the Waste to Energy plants are! True efficiecy is not profitable, industry knows this and will spend billions in efforts against it! How do any of us change that? Capitalism has become a force to be reckoned with. Big Money is keeping us from advancing in just about every area. So how do we change the roots of the tree without killing the tree first? Set me straight here!
I've been wondering for years why we don't already have a developed system in place like this. I don't think the government should be in charge of building such a thing, but if the government is going to spend billions of dollars anyway (which they are) then this would be a much better alternative to bailouts.
Its es-zo'teric to where your heading here lad. Currently theres a massive power grab being undertaken by the glut of the worst examples of humanity trying to recoup now through the fraudulant greed and failings of efforts at our expense. These pigs see capital as food and power to remaining lazy as the blue Bloods of Spain. If your going to invest, Do it the green plan but in this your needing to realy do your research and Get first hand with. Before you toss a single Dime. Its even money now.
it's a good idea, but it seems very expensive and may take a long time to build. may I suggest a czar for the improvement of america's transportation infrastructure?.
Great idea Protean. Makes a lot of sense. However, not many people are inflexible in their mentality. They are so short-sighted that they only see two choices between bailing out the big three or paying for the effects such as unemployment welfare if they let these companies slide. They don't have the same practical common sense approach like you do. Or maybe they have their own agendas.
Trains uses more energy per person than a car does. The difference is that the train (potentially) uses much 'cleaner' energy. Nuclear and solar power plants and electrical cars and/or an expansive rail system would solve so many pollution problems. The issue would be the extreme investment needed to pull it off right.
"the per person energy output is dependent upon the amount of people taking the train isnt it?"
Well, yeah, of course. Same as with buses and cars. Most trains aren't even filled to half capacity. My point is that you'll end up wasting a huge amount of energy running empty trains, so you'd need clean energy to compensate for it. Better to leave an electric car running than a fossil fuel car, right? Not that you can leave electric cars 'running'.
If it costs anything under $800 Billion, I don't think we have any excuse to say "no." What lacks is political will. We spend heedlessly on anything the powerful are pedling and believe all kinds of reasons why it is "necessary." Meanwhile, we are told that there is "no money" for projects the public really would benefit from. Sounds like all they need to do is put numbers in different columns. Or give the contract to Halliburton. Nah, it will never get done and will be full of maggots.
This is common sense and many have suggested taking this route, however as a society we are caught up trying to save jobs that depend on corporate welfare...without looking into future prospects. Much of the time, this dictates our fiscal policy and government expenditures.
you know I don't agree with everything you say, but on the whole your video are filled with so much common sense, workable solutions that it inspires me to have greater faith and confidence with humanity.
I must agree...I also find it very inspiring that there are people out there like you who are thinking of ways to make the world a better place and do something about it to spread their message...thank you.
Creative Idea's are the spawn of creative minds. Keep it up Protean. I love your Vids and your Ideas and most of all, the perceptions you glean from the world. Your perceptions much more so than your chosen alternatives.
My Professor told me that there are some talks in Detroit to build an electric high-speed train line based in Detroit running from Royal Oak, MI - Ann Arbor, MI (Home to U of M) - Chicago - Cleveland and back again.
This plan isn't for certain, but it just might boost Michigan's economy by creating labor.
Wize up kids. These companies have collapsed because the SYSTEM AND THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THE SYSTEM ARE GREEDY CROOKS.This is the way the system is operated. They are not so stupid that they make mistakes. They are Greedy, and these collapses are a part of the game. The Rich stay Rich. The poor get poorer. THAT'S the design. There's no money in WINNING wars, just WAGING wars. Try to think outside of the Box. It's sad,but true..911 WAS AN INSIDE JOB."But if that's true they must be truly EVIL!" YES!
Trains FTW!!! I would invest into the raiload. Looks like a good idea. It will make more bussniess, more money for us, and good make people travel allot more easier also that's a good thing.
First off i love train systems and really want a better one in America. The problem is that at this point they are not economically or culturally feasible. Investing into a train systems that already has to be subsidized not only in America but in Europe is not getting away from the gov. wasting money on companies that are irresponsible or are being pushed out of business by the market. Of course if you give me a choice of having to waste billions on Detroit or trains i will pick trains.
If I was the CEO of one of the big car companies, I'd be seriously looking at trains. It's not just a niche market that could make the companies a lot of money. It's also good for the economy!
A train system is such a good call..all over Europe has it and the trains in spain go upwards to 600km/h ..we really dont need cars as much as we think and even if you really needed one just get a green one that runs off electric/batteries/solar ..if only major companies decided to go green would it become cheaper and easier for people to afford but in the long run would bring back a lot of money and well benefit everyone
I agree that this could improve interstate transit. But local transit requires a different solution. In the large cities on the map, local transit infrastructure is sufficient enough that people don't need cars, NY, SF. But this would not work as well in the rural midwest or south, were ppl need to cover large distances. Most people need cars in the US. Public transit can be relied on to a greater extent in Europe because it's much smaller than the US. Less people need cars in Europe.
idiot. i hope you feel real happy about how you were used by the clinton family. everyone should have voted 3rd party..... alas there are people like you who do not get the hint.

You're assuming that planes never would have gotten off the ground but for the government monopolization and funding. There is no evidence of it.
Also, since the majority don't use the trains, the argument that it is more efficient is meaningless. That is assuming it is true.

CaptainAhab789 3 years ago
Great in theory, but as soon as government types, they'll destroy it into practice. There would be so much quid-quo pro going on in land deals it'd make your head spin. Sadly, it'd take a miracle for the gov't to head a project so big efficiently and lawfully.
CaptainAhab789 3 years ago
When a government no longer operates in the interest of the people, I think it's time to recreate the government from the ground up.
dimensionwarped 3 years ago 2
I'm glad you point that out. Fortunately we can do exactly that in the ballot box. The gov't is not on our side. Picking up the NYT on the net, you'd be fascinated to find an article describing how Nancy Pelosi, a very important person as leader of the House of Reps, all bills signed into law originate from her, is trying to stamp out transparency today. Anything Obama will hope to sign will go through her, and she isn't even waiting for Obama to pass her bold new plan against America.

All hail mighty GM!
sLeepPastNooN 3 years ago

(to be continued)
Lamstraler 3 years ago
However.
You will have to redo your homework, and find which routes are possibly profitable, with the info I just gave you.
;-)
Lamstraler 3 years ago
great idea. great starting point.
chronicremorse 3 years ago
My only criticism is that too few cities are connected; given that transportation is one of the primary limiting factor to development of an area, the boost in potential outlined by this map is necessarily disadvantageous to smaller cities that would be key in helping widen the economic benefits of faster, more efficient transport.
I mean, not every train has to *stop* at a given station -- but the station should be there.

lukewarmstorm 3 years ago
Most people don't want public transportation? What fairytale world do you live in? Anyone who has to balance a budget benefits greatly from public transportation, being able to eliminate vehicle expenses from your budget can be a godsend. Students, lower class people, even people from the upper classes would benefit greatly from this.
T8R 3 years ago
'Most people don't want public transportation?"
90% of citizens drive.
"being able to eliminate vehicle expenses from your budget can be a godsend"
Moving closer to your job, buying an apartment, walking more can remove expenses but like i said some people prefer the extra cost for convince.
"Students, lower class people, even people from the upper classes would benefit greatly from this."
Again if that were the case most would be using public transportation now.

Very few of that 90% are willing to drive cross-country. This is more of a challenger to airlines than autos.

Actually, there are already plans for a highspeed train from San Francisco to San Diego. It got passed during last election.
toxzen 3 years ago
Waste of money to build trainways when too few people want to ride it.
Will you FORCE people to ride it instead of taking a car or plane? Of course not.
Government is almost always less efficient at creating jobs as the private sector.
So the best way to stimulate employment is to reduce taxes and let small businesses invest and grow.
Taxing more, or even at the same level, and wasting it via the government will destroy net jobs, by killing some private sector employment.
freesk8 3 years ago
You're just spitting out the same old conservative propaganda. If you build a high-speed train network, it will cost significantly less for people to ride than the alternatives, and people will choose to ride it. On the other hand, we can pump money into the big three, which instead of being an investment, is more like pumping down the drain. We'll never see any of it again.
rmessenger 3 years ago
I agree that it is a waste to give the money to the big 3, or any for-profit company.
But my point is that it would be just as big a waste to spend it on rail transportation.
Think about it: what tends to be less efficient, big corporations or big government projects? Answer: government projects.
I know that throwing money at the big 3 is waste, but rail transportation is even worse. Better to leave the money in the hands of taxpayers.
People don't want to leave their cars.
freesk8 3 years ago
Maybe it might be cheaper; but, this country emphasizes freedom and being able to ride one's own transportation whenever one wants to wherever one wants is a major factor in that freedom equation.
Say that 5 time fast. :)
danheg 3 years ago
Small agile up-start businesses can create huge amounts of wealth, taking in money and producing something worth 10 times as much. On the flip side, giant dying corporations like the big three are like black holes, sucking up huge sums of money and producing nothing in return for the unwilling investor.
rmessenger 3 years ago
I totally agree with your comment above.
But the solution is not to give the money to small corps either.
Government will tend to do a lousy job of figuring out which small co. to give money to.
Instead, leave the money untaxed.
And I'm not a conservative.

proteanview 3 years ago
SF to SC is less than a 2 hour drive, or 3 hour bus ride. I don't see a super train as necessary for that...I'm not sure about the rest, but it would certainly make more sense to stop at the maximum number of cities while still keeping the time a relevant factor. I would guess a project like this would require at least 1 city per state as the funds to build it would come from a federal coffer...
3dbeing 3 years ago
Great video, I agree 100 %. They should do the same for our rail system here in Canada. Our problem is that the freight haulers rule the lines so we get slow and low frequency passenger service. Rail in Europe and parts of Asia is amazing. The States for the most part dropped the ball on this one.

proteanview 3 years ago
Yeah a highspeed connect for that line would be very nice. Currently it is more of a scenic/take your time route. A very nice trip for sure but pretty slow.
fatmoleman 3 years ago
i could not agree more. one more thing that i must add though... if an investment like this goes into effect we have to have the new rails set at a different gauge so that no freight can use it. amtrak is often delayed, and it is almost always because a freight car is broke down or simply in the way at a yard.. i know because i got stuck this way on my way back to d.c. this morning.. as was the same a month ago going to denver. great idea. it would help greatly for everyone.

Big Money is keeping us from advancing in just about every area. So how do we change the roots of the tree without killing the tree first? Set me straight here!
woodyrimshot 3 years ago
I've been wondering for years why we don't already have a developed system in place like this. Trains uses more energy per person than a car does. The difference is that the train (potentially) uses much 'cleaner' energy. Nuclear and solar power plants and electrical cars and/or an expansive rail system would solve so many pollution problems. The issue would be the extreme investment needed to pull it off right.
Denamic 3 years ago
the per person energy output is dependent upon the amount of people taking the train isnt it?
InfiniteGXT 3 years ago 2
"the per person energy output is dependent upon the amount of people taking the train isnt it?"
Well, yeah, of course. Same as with buses and cars. Most trains aren't even filled to half capacity. My point is that you'll end up wasting a huge amount of energy running empty trains, so you'd need clean energy to compensate for it. Better to leave an electric car running than a fossil fuel car, right? Not that you can leave electric cars 'running'.
Denamic 3 years ago
If it costs anything under $800 Billion, I don't think we have any excuse to say "no." What lacks is political will. We spend heedlessly on anything the powerful are pedling and believe all kinds of reasons why it is "necessary." Meanwhile, we are told that there is "no money" for projects the public really would benefit from. Sounds like all they need to do is put numbers in different columns. Or give the contract to Halliburton. Nah, it will never get done and will be full of maggots.
hollywoodartchick 3 years ago
That's what I meant with 'issue'. Also why I used the term 'investment'. In the long run, I definitively think it'd pay off.
Large amounts of money going to something that'll basically ruin oil companies? The oil people obviously doesn't like that. Hence the issue.
Denamic 3 years ago
This is common sense and many have suggested taking this route, however as a society we are caught up trying to save jobs that depend on corporate welfare...without looking into future prospects. Much of the time, this dictates our fiscal policy and government expenditures.

Nikg420 3 years ago
I agree that this could improve interstate transit. But local transit requires a different solution. In the large cities on the map, local transit infrastructure is sufficient enough that people don't need cars, NY, SF. But this would not work as well in the rural midwest or south, were ppl need to cover large distances. Most people need cars in the US. Public transit can be relied on to a greater extent in Europe because it's much smaller than the US. Less people need cars in Europe.
