The protest are against the government of Australia for giving into Greek pressure and negating self-determination and freedom of expression. It is to make sure the Australian government understands the lack of recognition does not allow Macedonian Australians to integrate into Australian society completely, it is a smack in the face.
This is about self-determination, and I'm sure you are unfamiliar with the issue, but believe me its far from being the same situation in Britain.

Before 1913 the region of Macedonia included the Republic of Macedonia but was only 10% Greeks.

There was a Bucharest treaty which divided Macedonia into todays three parts even though the Macedonians rejected its division and protested to keep it united. After the division the Greek part discriminated, suppressed and tortured Macedonians into new last names, joining Greek church & 2 talk Greek only.

Scientist can prove our Macedonian origin through Genetics (gene pairing). This has already been done though, which showed the amount of Slavic marker genes in Macedonians were small compared to ancient inhabitant marker genes (I'm not talking about the HLA studies).
Historians are in argument as to the ethnic affiliation of the ancient Macedonians. Many believe they are separate from the Greeks, and many believe they are Greeks (though their view is influenced by Greece).

Another note on your argument. When speaking to Greeks I have noticed that the fear that they fear people think of them... they castrate onto another ethnic group to avoid being concentrated on. In your case, you stated I was jealous and cultureless, then try to make an argument as to how the Macedonians weren't Slavicized.
In Northern Greece, there are >200,000 "bilingual speakers" in which the people speak Slavic/act Slavic/have Slavic customs, but state they are "Greek Macedonian".

The Greeks in the 1800-1900s never called themselves "Macedonian" nor is their any text which stated they are related to the ancient Macedonians.
"Greek Macedonian" is the real fantasy. A combination of Pontic Greeks who were forced to give up their history so Greece doesn't lose land, Macedonians/Bulgarians/other Slavics who were forced to convert into a Greek identity, and Vlach who aren't recognized by Greece as a minority.
