Didn’t all 3 do some westerns before Trek? I guess Bones did the most being the oldest. Is that why they called him Bones? I’m dead Jim! He was the best. LOL... Come get some Catspit~! ☠
Is it wrong that the thought of DeForest Kelley jumping onto a wagon to bitch slap someone with a pistol makes me super happy. Cause if it is well...I'm wrong. Thank you for this. God Bless the old Cowboys. Those still alive and those who've left us.
It is a real shame the way todays actors (a lot of them but not all) carry on. Married & divorced like yo-yos. De was in a different league, with others such as Alan Alda who actually had character and talent themselves and not mimicked from others. They made their won paths and left a woth wild legacy for future genreations.
He came up to Sacramento CA for a local convention omgosh back in the middle 1970's. I had the chance to meet him briefly then. Very quiet, private individual. Polite and so full of life. Very understated talent. We'll not likely see his type again.
I remember seeing DeForest Kelley live at a New York Star Trek convention about 20 years ago, and stood about 20 feet from him. He was extremely slender -- and extremely humble. For as many conventions he had been to even at that point, he was still blown away by the outpouring of adulation we as fans gave him.
Kelley was not a social sort -- Shatner and Nimoy described him as "very private," a guy who would just go home at the end of the day to his wife and dog.
Is it just me or does he look too... fragile/cute/adorable to be a cowboy? He's like the shy, sweet guy dressing in cowboy clothes that don't quite suit him. :D
De was "One Take Kelley." He could nail his scene in one take every time--and get to the core of the role and the scene--exactly what the director needed--all by instinct. (Shatner on the other hand required many, many takes!) I learned a lot about acting from De.
De was well aware that he had been honored with the Golden Boot award. His good friend William Campbell (you'll remember him from Squire of Gothos on ST) nominated him and secured the award and told De about it before he died. De was very proud to win that award.
I'm also a huge fan of his western roles. These are the roles that Gene Roddenberry referred to when he said that De was the finest actor he ever knew. He felt De deserved an Oscar or an Emmy--which of course he never won.
This is so cool! I'd never seen anything of Kelley before the Trek era. I especially like the stills where he is smiling - that's the way I see him in my mind when I think of him :). The last picture was a fun conclusion to the video.
Perfect match. By choosing this song you made it sound as if Cash had written it for Kelley. I'm really impressed. I thought I'd heard all the Johnny Cash songs, especially the hits from Walk the Line. This video makes me sorry Mr. Kelley's Golden Boot award came posthumously. However, what's cool about him is that he intensely enjoyed acting the whole time: for him it was the journey, not the finish. He knew he was special and shared it for over 40 years.
Hey there! Where are the images at :58 and 1:43 from? I've been trying to find them myself but its hard to find good information about Mr. Kelley's pre-Star Trek days.

A couple of times, he looks a little like pre-Trek William Shatner.
I always enjoy seeing Trek regulars (of any of the series) in roles before the show.

I'm so desperately jealous of you. His portrayal of McCoy inspires me on a daily basis. I'm pre-med, and that's the kind of doctor I want to be.

If Mr Kelley's Dr McCoy character on Star Trek had been a proctologist, would he have been able to find out if there are rings around Uranus???

De is not dead, as long as we remember him.
Though I still miss him very very much.

Kelley was a wonderful actor and he deserved to have a much greater role than what offered him the filmmakers.

At 0:58 this is a picture from Gunfight at the Ok Corral.

Hope this helps
