@sksman71. That s correct. The origin of the Black Irish is in fact much older. Some point to a prehistoric eolithic arrival in Ireland from what is now the Basque country in Spain, others believe it may even be an incursion of people from North Africa. There is some (albeit flimsy) evidence that Galway might even have started as a Phoenician trading port.
Celtic as a term may be problematic. The only people who can DEFINITELY so called are a people who lived North of Greece in ancient times. It is probably better to think of these cultures as a general Atlantic culture bound by Maritime trade routes - see Bob Quinn-
Also Prince Nyther was the prince of the Albions, I do belive there is a football team called the West Bromwich Albions (or something like that)...and also there are two rivers in England called the Stour (that means the ASTUR...or the Asturian river).
SEMPERGALAICUS...The Basque Country was a "county" of Asturias, the same as Cantabria (known as santander nowadays). And we Asturians Appear in the first map ever drawn (Ptolomews). We had an Asturian prince called Nyther Munyel (2 B.C.)...we are Pre-Celts...a very, very old country. It's true that we were deeply romanized, but we are very proud of our celtic Blood and we hold fiercely to our traditions. ¡¡¡PUXA ASTURIES DIXEBRÁ¡¡¡
For what I've read there is very little Celtic blood - whatever that means - in Western Europe. It's obvious that Gaelic is a celtic language, that in Iberia, Gaul Celtic languages were spoken and that there are Celtic toponymes in Iberia, but - as in the B. Islands - there was very little genetic influence. The most common genetic markers in Western Europe: the basque markers. Read Oppenheimer or Sykes to understand why. As for Celtic music... after so many centuries who knows?
Asturias IS a Celtic nation. Rome needed more time and men to take Asturias than to take all Gaul. The reason for this conquest was that Emperor Augustus wanted to fix the limits of the Empire and needed fresh men in his legions. (The men of my city, Gijón, called themselves Cymru, like modern Wales.) Most of those Asturians the Romans enlisted were sent to Britain and Scotland, to build the Hadrian Wall, possibly because they spoke a language quite similar to that of the British Celts.
in conclusion the spaniards are among these "celtic" ethnic groups spaniard are more related to the british(specially the irish) than the europeans in the mainland even the french whom you'd bet are more compatible
@billiecorpse91 I have read that there was a genetic study done. The Irish have more in common with the Spanish than with main land Europe.Maybe the Celtic ancestors came up through what is now Spain and Portugal and settled in Ireland? So strange to know that.my moms dad had pitch black hair. They would call people who had that hair color black Irish LOL.My great grandma would say that the reason was because the Spaniards,Danes or the moors.invaded Ireland.I dont know about the moors.
@telondeacero I'd say more than roots. hell all spaniards if not I'd say 85% of spaniards have celtic ancestry especially galicia & asturias kudos I'm 25% asturian, though my spanish sucks
i'm 100 % asturian and i consider myself more asturian than spaniard, it's difficult to explain. Like another people in Catalunya, Euskal Herria, Galiza, Andalucía... it's something like the old Yugoslavia.
yup that's the thing to love about spain cultural diversities & identities in every province, its nice to know there are allot of proud asturians out there
Following the accounts found in the book of invasions, called Lebor Gebala Erenn, the Irish celts are indeed descendants of the galician celts, but I don't know if it is historically proven that this relation really exists.
I believe all celtic peoples are a "big family"; relatives in the sense of ethnic background and culture.
@raonipaes yeah i'm not sure any one could prove historically that there is a connection.Especially in Ireland when there are not too many Celtic artifacts.Maybe there was trade of some sort but to say that there is an absolute genetic connection is hard to say but not impossible. It is very obvious that there is a Celtic influence in northern Spain but culturally speaking there is in Ireland as well. The best thing to do would be to compare the dialects of Ireland and those in northern Spain .
@shambles7ful Oh im sure they dont look like the Irish but that doesn't mean that they don't share certain genetic markers. The Irish are fair skinned but if you look at the Irish that live in western Ireland. They have black hair like the Spanish.Like my moms dad.I am not saying all Irish in the west have black hair just more than usual. The book of invasions might be a clue to the origins of the Irish.
@sksman71 The dark hair and dark eyes you find sometimes in that part of the country is believed to attributed to the ship wrecked spainish armada, I've been told this by the locals themselves.........
@shambles7ful Yeas ive heard the same tall tale from my Irish great grand mother. The problem with that story is that any Spaniard who might of survived a ship wreck would of been killed if they made it to shore. The Black Irish as they are sometimes called existed way before any Spanish ship wreck.
Bassdrummer91, this pipe band comes from Asturies. It is a small region in the north of Spain, surrounded by the mountains and looking to British Islands.

I'm 25% Asturian too (Paes) and 75% Galician (Peres).
I feel very proud to be part of a culture which survived thousands of years of opression, such as the moorish invasion and the romanization.
Well, we're still here kicking some ass!

Thanks, Earthjig! I'll have to learn that tune.

La canción se llama "Xuanin de Mieres". Aunqué las gaitas tengan un aspecto de gaita Escocesa, le garantizo que son Asturianas.

The tune is called "Xuanin de Mieres". Although the gaitas look like Scottish bagpipes, I can assure you they're Asturian.

Because the tone sounds the same

¿Cuál canción tocaban en el video? Es elegante y linda al mismo tiempo.
Algunos de las gaitas tienen el aspecto de las escocesas (en el diámetro y número de los roncones). Me hace sentir vergüenza ajena.

What tune were the bands playing in the video? It's elegant and pretty at same time.
When I see gaitas that look Scottish, like some of those gaitas did (in the diameter and number of the drones), I cringe a little.
