  • Is that Phil Collins on the drums? :O

  • Who cares whether Phil Collins has talent or not, we should be talking about the undisputed talent in this video; John Martyn

  • A beautiful soul searching tune as ever from

    John Martyn. Makes me melt.

  • Sweet little mystery

  • phil collins is a bigoted twat, and with his tiresome melodies took Genesis down the pop road, so shut it phenix

  • Even in my hometown less people know Martyn; but there had been a wonderfull moment just talking about him; thank`s for posting!

  • Genius

  • i rember this on the whistle test, back the 1981, i could not get it out of my head , first class" and now 2011 still first class "

  • Just a lovely song and such a soulful voice. Wonder if we shall ever see a return of the genre and be able to hear music of this calibre and spirit again? Oh, and as an aside, I thought Phil Collins did a great job on backing vocals...perfectly in sync with Mr. Martyn and clearly understanding what Mr Martyn was going for here. Don't know why people have to bring the negativism in...what a waste of time.

  • that one dislike, fuck off

  • Great upload - o, those sweet times ...

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Different song from the live acoustic on here. This is so much worse!

  • Sweet little memories....

  • My eyes fill with tears every time I watch this.

  • an absolute ledgent, who will be sadly missed,

listerning to john on a dark and stormy night, bottle of red wine, and sit and watch patterns in the rain with some one you love, who could ask for more

  • unique. impossible to replace. his talent and modesty. a treasure

  • Just to give old Phil a little support: He's doing most of the backing vocals, and the bit at the end is so sweet. His intonation and phrasing is spot on, noticeably good on just two repeated lines. Oh, and he's a bloody good drummer too.

  • that was incredible.

  • Thanks for posting this. This is the actual performance that made me go and buy 'Grace & Danger', having never heard of John Martyn before. I was maybe coming to the party a few years late but I've been there ever since :-)

  • Yup, Phil Collins on drums. Phil guested on the album Grace and Danger which is what this track is from. The album was an homage to the break up of John's marriage at the time. He had to fight tooth and nail with Island Records who didn't want to release the album as they felt it was 'too depressing'. So much for record companies. Saw the guy many times. Such a loss.

  • ....."I watch the radio - I don't need to turn it on..." this is just great.... what a guy...

  • As the anniversary of John's passing is drawing to a close, I thought I'd finish with this superlative version of one my favourites.

  • Oh how i LOVE John Martyn's music! My seven year old son is learning to appreciate his work too as we usually have something of JM on the stereo...However, in this song, he is convinced that John sings.... "SNOTTY ARMS IS OUR NEW FRIEND"....hmmm

  • Love his wonderful voice, nice guitar player and songwriter. Thanks John

  • Oh in case you missed it, Mr Phil Collins in drums ; )

  • Oh Wow... This is the first time I've seen this since the OGWT NYE special 81/82. It's the song that woke me up to JM, what a great talent he was, and a shame that he's no longer with us... Yes RIP John, you are sorely missed...

    Alxx

  • So glad he left us with some beautiful memories,RIP John...

  • beautiful song, superbly performed live

  • Sheer class - Those who never discovered John Martyn's music I feel for you.

    The man was superb!!!

  • Totally totally agree. There will never be anyone like him.

  • I just have dicovered him......(ABOUT TIME TOO)

  • What a fuckin endin!

    Get in john!

    Gone but not forgotten

  • One of those songs that just says what you feel. Sometimes all you can do is hide that sweet little mystery in your heart and Dream. Then even though it may never happen, it will stay safe inside your heart. John Martyn, you have left us with such gems we romantics just cling to. May you see How much you are remembered and so Loved. Peace and Love to all that listen to your beautiful voice. :)

  • What a way to find out he had passed on....fucking youtube comments...saw him in Glasgow and was gobsmacked at how good he was...R.I.P. John!x

  • timeless music from a man with so much talent

  • I am commenting on John Martyn and the video I have just watched.....nothing to do with Phil Collins........!!!...John Martyn, to me, is a bloody genius and I thought he was a fantastic talent and , to me , he is and will be the most talented and able guitarist/songwriter .LOVE YOU JOHN MARTYN....mine and a lot of other peoples musical experience will be totally devastated by your passing. May Heaven take you and hold you close. xx

  • pEOPLE who dont' like phil collins' music understand nothing to talent is

in song making, in drums, in harmony, in backing vocals and in melody

  • shhshhhshhh

  • heard this voice over thirty years ago .still has the same feeling(brilliant)

    thankyou R.I.P.

  • i m surprised this song wasnt a number 1 or anything .

    its amazing!

  • Yes they did - but then again they were / are devoid of any home grown talent.

  • wet wet wet had a hit with this one...

  • like this one very different

  • What a shame but thank you anyway. The live version on OGWT (now added to Grace & Danger remastered) is wonderful and it would have been great to have seen it.

  • Dear Waggonersled. Do you have "Lookin' On"? from the same OGWT performance?

  • Sorry, no. It's not on the video I got this from.

  • i think peolpe like below making fun of phil collins´ "lack of talent" are just pigheaded idiots,- i´m no taste-cop, but these abundant remarks make me angry. phil collins has made so much, lesser known, fucking brillant music and stayed a simple man throughout. He is one of the most gifted musicians on this jerk-covered planet! brand x, earlier genesis (up to 1983), countless uncredited drumjobs...so shut up

  • @MoveOverCasanova PHIL IS GREAT AND BRILLIANT AND GENIOUS AND MORE ... A MAN WHO HAS MAKE MILLIONS PEOPLE ENJOY AND BE HAPPY WITH ALL HIS MUSIC... I ´¨LOVE PHIL FOR EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MoveOverCasanova But he's a TORY!

  • @sid4me lol

  • @MoveOverCasanova

Right on ~ well said. He's contributed infinitely more than any of his armchair-hero-critics ever have or will.

  • i have seen him live :) the only bad thing was i was only 3 nd a bit so i hardly remember it :( he is an amzin musician

  • my fav version too just the electric guitar is amazing

  • john martyn wasnt an artist he was a musician live on john

  • I will never, best times ever.

  • Any one out there that has a video of One World, its his best.

John , still remember me at Glastonbury?

  • This guy is a one off a great song writer;and vocalist. Never saw him knew of him though, but it took such a long time to get into what he was about!!! what a talent

  • This is amazingi really love it

i wish i had gone to see him in concert more often!

  • if you think you've written a song more amazing than this please let me know!

  • top that!

  • Wow.

  • this is one of the nicest songs ive heard for some time now. its just a shame i discover such talented musicians once they've diedso i wont see them live. ho hum

  • Phil is a cracking drummer, but he's still an absolute bellend.

Like Eric Clapton. Cracking musician; abhorrent individual.

I'm just waiting for the 'killjoy liberal' comments to come a-hurling at me now...

  • Ur absolutely 100% right there. Especially about Clapton. U have to admit that if it wasnt for Phil Collins though we mightnt have got such a perfect pop tune out of JM. Not that he couldnt have written it without him, but he would have probably shelved it if it werent for Collins commercial leaning.

  • Right behind you there.... but what a band,!

  • as a matter of interest why are collins and clapton "abhorrent individuals"

  • I was probably over-stating the case a tad... Eric Clapton supported Enoch Powell. Pretty ironic, given that his music is a positive result of multiculturalism!

Phil Collins moved to Switzerland in 1997 because he said the country would crumble as soon as Tony Blair took office. We all like to overreact, but Phil took it more than a little too far.

Neither of these facts prevent me from enjoying their music. You don't necessarily have to like the guys though.

  • Yeah, Collins rules!

  • My friends all tell me that I look so sad,

They don't need to ask me why,

They know the reason that I feel so bad,

Since the night you said goodbye.

    Rest Easy Big Fella!

  • legend

  • THe best drummer in the world with a fantastic writer singer= 2 wonderful albums and this rare live!

stop laugh at Phil because nobody has his talent

  • prince has more talent in his left testicle than phil collins, i would say thats regarded largley as a blatent fact, but the joy of music, whateva floats the boat..john martyn legend.

  • Rest in perfect peace John. Condolences to all friends & Family x

  • It is very sad to hear that Mr. Martyn is no longer amoung us, I had such fine moments with his music.

Condoleances to all friens & relatives.

  • I'd echo that. I loved Johns music. The world is a lesser place without him. A concert with him was like a gathering of friends in his own kitchen - so personal. RIP John

    Benny

  • Phil and John... and I bet you, when Phil's friends wi' someone this means that person must have somethin' special indeed!

Another huge piece o' Scotland's gone now...

    R.I.P. Iainie.

  • I Saw John about 8 times in the 80's in the London Guildford Days with the "Heads" from Cranleigh in Surrey. He was an original. The percussive use of guitar and the belnd with Danny;s bass was sublime. The recordings with Phil on drums and backing vocals are priceless.

May You Never John. RIP Mate.

    Mark Selfe

  • BEAUTIFULLY said!

  • The Glorious Fool.

    rip John

  • Marvelous song, so sweet . What guitar! What voice! Rest in peace.

  • RIP John, hell we had some times my man as I recall, memories and music will live for ever

  • The train has reached the final station John. Thanks for everything, I'll always cherish the memories of your great gigs.

  • Rip Big Bad John

  • Another Legend has left us.RIP John

  • a true legend.may he rest in peace

  • what a legacy of music left behind will play it forever at sometime or other R.I.P. x

  • ... and RIP John Martyn. Privileged to have met him once in Lisdoonvarna as a young whippersnapper. This is the song I always I think of when I hear his name.

Just a sweet, sublime piece of music.

  • Phil Collins has to be one of the most god awful songwriters from the 80s. How he ever got so popular is beyond me.

Just listen to Another Day in Paradise to remind yourself how awful he was back in the day.

Best place for him was behind a drum kit.

  • Sad news today, another legend has left us behind. My friend gave me his biography for Christmas. Must get around to reading it now

  • RIP John and thanks

  • SirOliverReed, you cannot be asserting that Phil Collins is not a talent. You simply cannot. Collins is a titan of British music, and always will be, as much as the great John Martyn is. The former attained more commercial success, it is true, but this does not detract from the Genesis drummer's genius. Yes, genius.

  • Nice one; but who was the drummer who sang those great harmonies?

  • doh! - just had to read down the page!

  • Beautiful song great singer!

  • super top song.

  • Why do I love this man ? let me count the ways: he writes songs which are sublime, he performs them with skill and passion, he was friends with Nick Drake, above all he is his own man

  • John - thank you

    RIP

  • Sublime!

  • Magic John..

    God bless

  • As a new John Martyn fan, and a huge one, this is my favorite song yet. Also, Phil is superb on backup, as evidenced by his near perfect timing with John once the instruments stop. Just beautiful.

  • Phil Collins produced the Grace and Danger album of John's, which this song is from.

  • Absolute nonsense. He only played drums and provided backing vocals. Phil Collins producing a genuine talent like John Martyn is a laughable notion, as Collins would be the first to admit.

  • Nice to see Phil where he belongs.....at the back!!!Behind the master.

  • Absolutely..

  • Great Album, Great Talent

  • Is that Phil Collins beating that drum?

  • Yup

  • I don't think many people really appreciate what a superb singer (in terms of his phrasing and choice of melodies) John Martyn really is - that's a soul singer !

  • Very few people grasp what a genius JM actually is.

    When he's gone.......

  • you are so right - you can't argue with fools !

  • i appreciate how talented he is and i think a lot of his fan do too.

  • Awesome!!!.... Great team John 'n' Phil!
