@ericatwo: You gave the history of "Greensleeves", which is a completely different piece. The words are by Paul Francis Webster and the music by Dmitri Tiomkin and it was composed for the 1960 film, The Alamo. The fact that so many people assume it is an old folk song is part of the intended effect.
Deguello321 - There were a number of things I had wanted to say about you, but I just can't lower myself to your level. All I can say is that I really feel sorry for you.
Tarantino took this melody for his "Basterds", and I couldn't understand, why the music was so... I can't find the right word... comfortable. The author is Dimitry Tiomkin, and this style reminds of the music for the Soviet films of 1940-1950-s...
Interesting. You Justify a theft made with the force with historical assumptions agree to the collective memory of who they are descended from those who committed such an act. the Mexicans did not robbed the land of indigenous peoples in Texas. These lands were acquired by Spain. The Indian people supported to México against E.U. It is only history and the past it is the past.
the western nations are the good guys. they are democratic and they don't throw stones at their women and they have alcahol at their weddings. stone age east.
some people say 'that's a crock..' they usually mean 'a crock of s**t'. I do not know the origin of that saying but crock was meant to be a pun for Crockett.
I think you really have to dig deep to find 1960 Alamo. I am in my 60's and yeah, people really took it serious when I was a kid.
Now I think they would rather see Billy Bob Thornton et al portray the story.
Great movie! I have it on video, and it is always entertaining to watch. That said, I am tired of people saying things like: "Hey it wasn't 'historically accurate'...." and all that. Hey, it is a MOVIE! And try and tell me that all the WWII movies were "historically accuarate." As the song says "that's all we need to know about the 13 days of glory at the seige of Alamo."
representation of it? Maybe the Texans remminisced to some beautiful ballad but we don't know what these poor guys thought of that last night..
Don't mind hero worship like John Wayne blowing up the ammo with his last breath. (Not in the Mexican soldiers diary?)
Or Guinn 'big-boy ' Williams going over the wall with a Mexicans head around each arm. I enjoyed the picture. Just wierd why folks prophesize history had not 200 stopped 5000.
Okay, they were stalled, at least long enough for every town, river, county and granite building in downtown Austin to be named and glorified after these defenders. You are a fool to not call that history albeit not on the terms you desire.
I think wars are full of blown strategies. After the 1st setback, why didn't Santa Ana just maul these guys down with his full force then wait 10 to 15 days?
I don't think you understand my position on the film. I DO think it is a crock (no pun intended) the usual John Wayne glory. I could only handle 5 minutes of the Green Berets. Calm down man.
I only liked the film score. I too read the diary from the Austin American Statesman interpretation of Davy Crockett's capture and subsequent execution.
But do you really think people accept the 1960 Alamo for it's historical accuracy? watching Alan Ladd's Iron Mistress will really blow your BP.
People misunderstand me, I am calm, this is just expression of words.
The Green Berets was really, really bad,
yes. Yes, the old movie perpetuates myths. Especially for the very young. For many this is their only exposure to Texas history aside from a bit from books in elementary school. What crock?
directions taken en route, Crocketts death after the battle and other details. Crockett was executed on his knees and did not beg but accepted his own death without a word. Gutsy indeed. You misunderstand, I don't deny the valor on both sides, just the slanted
version of this fairy tale of a movie. Widmark was really bad.
Of the three versions made since 1960,relative to honest portrayal, not counting
the made for T.V. versions(gunsmoke's James Arness- Crockett-about as fakey of a series) the one shown at the Imax theatres is the one easily closest to
reality. Of course it wasn't nearly as popular of trendy as the fictitious account. As one of the actors in the moive said
@leonardinaustin Actually the Texans fought for the continuation of the republic of Mexico, against the dictatorship of Santa-Anna,not independence. That came later.
History is the story of conquest. Where did the Mexicans get the land? From the Indians, right? And when they migrated in, they conquered other, more primitive peoples. Plus, the Indian tribes fought amongst themselves for territory. Anyway, had Texas not won independence, it would today be just another piece of poor, corrupt, sad Mexico, whose population would be swimming the Red and Sabine Rivers to go to America.
Trooper John..HOW COME you make simple SENSE..and our politicians...Just do NOT GET IT??? Bless you brother, and THANKS ..at least I know there is someone ELSE..like YOU, Trooper John.. who shares my EXACT SENTIMENT!!

@TrooperJohnSmith You may be right because if this was after 1850 you may be wrong because the Republic of Texes was free from the mexicans and the mexicans gained some of it from there indpendence from spain but they did go inland to california and the usa got that in 1860,70 and 1880 but by then america had growen by takeing oregon from british clamis over it.

A time to be a slaver', a time to be racist'.
The slave codes of plantations are callin' me home.
'Twas so good to be a slave owner then, in a season of plenty,
When the whip was a cracken' as high as the sky.
A time just for killin', a time just for murder'.
A time to be lying' about slaves of your own.
'Twas so good to be a racist then, to be close to the plantation,
And to stand by your cotton fields at the moment we steal Mexican land.

The glory is only in the movie. Not in real life. It is myth and it perpetuates
nonsense. The gutsy one were the ones
running into gunfire across open ground
not hiding behind an adobe wall taking aim at people coming at them. You will also need a copy of The wizard of oz, also every entertaining.

War is not glorious, ask my son , a navy special forces vet, just back. He won't bother explaining. The winners removed
the Hussein Statues though. IT IS history, but the movie is dishonest. My " terms" are just truth
not the exaggerated heroics nonsense. Crockett was never called Davy that is
Disney stuff. He was arrested for public drunkeness his first nights arrival. No, not good stategy. He was an egomaniac and called himself the
"Napolean of the West".
