I've been wanting to hear organist Don Shinn for decades. Its clear that he is a very underrated and obscure talent who was a huge influence on Keith Emerson and Vincent Crane (Atomic Rooster), both of whom took what Don was doing and popularized it while Don himself remained unknown. Whats he up to now?
RS was only with the SA for about 6 months, we had a residency at the Marquee club for about 6 months, after which he left. .there are at least 3 compilation cd's with the SA recordings on ..JUMP AND DANCE DOIN THE MOD VOL2 ...THE R & B SCENE decca ...THE GO GO TRAIN DOIN THE MOD.... ..DOIN THE MOD VOL3 They have ...Gospel Train, Seventh Son, Good morning little schoolgirl, Dont break it up, Lets make it pretty baby,..Mean woman blues.....
Played with them at Southampton University on 23 January 1965. Then Rod Stewart was the lead singer. The keyboard player was playing a pink and white Bird Organ not a Hammond. I think RS left the group quite quickly so he's not on this record
i love the soul agents and i am positive i have seen them in the 1960,s (bloody sure) there were so many great bands playing live everywhere then bloody brilliant times brilliant band
One helluva drivin' group! This was REALLY 60s music--bare-bone mod blues-- before all of the overblown psychedelic nonsense set in. And you are SO right, Tarquin--Don Shinn's keyboard work is right up there with the Animals in their "House of the Rising Sun" days. Great post!
Rod Stewart replaced the original lead singer Johnny Keeping for less than a year and then joined Steam Packet. They were very popular on the South Coast of England and I was fortunate to see them on many occasions. They were a great live band and Rod Stewart was a superb frontman. Alas, I do not think he recorded any tracks with them that were ever released. The keyboard player Don Shinn was pretty extraordinary too
@Umskiddy He was lead singer. We (The Confederates) played at Southampton University with the SAs on 24th January 1964. Go to Facebook Original Modernists 1959 - 1966. You'll see a poster detailing the event. Rod Stewart didn't stay with them long and as far as I know, no records were produced by the group with him singing. He left the SA within a year.
@Umskiddy Very unlikely I'm afraid. Some of us are still playing but in different bands. The last re-union we had was in 1987 on Hastings Pier with the Searchers and Cliff Bennett - Now there's no Pier and few Confederates. Cheers
I'm glad that you're enjoying them. I'm trying to put a mix of soul, beat, psych, reggae and others on, so it's a real mixture. And I'm a printer as well!
