I am not sure if it was intended by the editor, however, I personally feel as though this entire video could have looked much better with color correction and crushing the blacks.
Great job! And I hope all is well with your health. Some of it's pretty funny, and the two black dudes and Master Yondi are awesome. May I ask why you went with the cam mic instead of the shotty, since you had one?
Thanks for the nice words. I wanted to be able to show people that a movie can be made, with just a camcorder and without extra gear. Mics, lights reflectors. Looking back I should have used a shotgun mic throughout. But I was curious if I could do it too. I will tell the guys you enjoyed their work. I see them every few days still since they live or work closeby - Thanks again - John
One day in slum was shot in poor quality old sony handycam . and it is my first film. but its not all about camera qualities . its how much story u conveyed and how it struck the audience. how audience felt. thats the base. camera qualities and effects are second. i learned that from film makers. u have gr8 skills than me. but these are the things that i noticed that i think i should tell u.

I did not get actors, I got friends of mine. As a director I got more out of these non professionals than anyone could have. Were your guys actors, they did a good job. More than a few people have commented that The old guy was their favorite character. Have you seen our 61 techniques video make from this type in 61 moviemaking techniques on youtube and let meknow wht you think.
Yes, for some people it does, I would put you in that catagory and I respect your opinion. I am doing another movie in the next year and would love your opinion on what improvements on my new movie I should make. I am always into new ideas. Thanks in advance for your feedback - John.
I think people should check out your film "One day in the slum" On your channel. That is a good short film. I am always looking for other filmmakers that can help our productions out. Keep up the great work. Any ideas you have for us are welcome.
Only on Master Yondi, he was very quite so I used an off camera shotgun mic pointed at him. The other dialog was all with the on camera mic. Using a wide angle lens allowed us to get closer and this way the mic was closer too.
I watch lots of short films and I have to say that I think this guy has potential, because he does the most important thing; tells a good story. With the advent of all these inexpensive cameras, that produce such beautiful images, there are tons of crappy short films. A real filmmaker tells a story that makes you think, and better yet feel something. As a fellow filmmaker I would just like to say GOOD WORK to all the cast and crew members!
Mr Yondi, or the main actor said some words which are really wise. I am amazed by how much these words affected me. Other than this, the shots are great, some techniques I will consider using in my new vids. I loved the transition techniques when she had the paper in hand and the next scene is Mr Yondi. I loved how inspiring this video is. Thanks a lot. Ahmad
@jonvideo you can always check my videos on my channel I would love to hear your comments. That would be splendid if you have some time to do so :) thanks a lot. Regards. Ahmad
I looked at your channel & saw your videos "A life in the Day" and the go cart movie , and I must admit your shots are aesthetically pleasing. You have a good eye. I too used the same shots you did. I used the action toward the camera shot. The horizon shot, The low angle shot, The action moving out of the frame shot, the multi layer focus shot and more. See my 61 techniques video that is basiclaly a directors cut of the movie. In 1996 and 98 I produced two videos called(see next post)
Advanced Camera Broadcast techniques vol. one and two , that were two videos that covered over 100 of the most popular shots in famous moives, Speilburg , Hitchcock, Zemicks etc. I compiled these shots in over 160 minutes on the training videos. They are still for sale at elitevideo website over 5000 sold. These are some of the shots I used in Kindness of Others. I am always open to new shots if you have some ideas, please share them, I love to learn new stuff. Specifics welcome.
I could have used some fade ins im sure, I did not want to do too many movements of the camera because I wanted to get a "documentary feel" even though I have a steadicam. I also wanted to limit my tripod shooting to prove I could do a short film run and gun style- mostly with on camera mic and handheld.
Some people have asked about the song at the 3 minute mark. It is a public domain recording from the 1930s that the BBC library has. Its been over a year since I made the movie, so let me go back and find it and I will post the name here in the next week or so. I really enjoy it.
@jonvideo I dont understand why you would go for an amateur angle? Isn't the whole point of a passion to better yourself at what you do for your own personal growth.
@jonvideo I see. That makes a lot more sense. This is the first video I have seen of yours and I watched a few others. The one you did about making a background with the cardboard, paint, and shower curtain was just exceptional! I bought a Canon XH A1s and have been learning to use it (slowly, as its a hobby I just started) and you have tons of great ideas. You should be very proud of your work. Not only are you talented in your whole processes but you have helped me also.
I really liked this short. I have seen some awful attempts and even a fancy cam and lighting Cannes winner which in my view sucked! Made no sense and I didn't care much to interpret its hidden modernist symbolism. This is interesting all the way through, you wanna see what will happen next and the main actress is good. Nicely done, nice little message. Good stuff.
What makes this video come across an amateur is the sound quality (far off outside, and too hollow inside), the lighting and the acting....sorry, but although this has a few funny seconds, it doesn't draw that much interest. Hope you can get something better with practice!
Lawrence , Yes, We wanted -amateur angle , we wanted to show people that you can do a film without a fancy mics -pro actors- steadicam etc. (I own an mke6/66 seinheiser a $700 mic but chose not to use it.) As for drawing that much interest. It has gotten close to 5 thousand hits in 8 months. You cousins film (very nicely done I might add- perhaps better techniques than I have ) has recieved 250 hits in 2 years. It is all about the message and the delievery.
@jonvideo It's a decent effort. Don't get me wrong. It just could be better because you show so much potential. I should have made that clearer. Sorry I didn't. As to my cousin's short, it was a family flick for family -- never meant for anyone else, ergo 250 hits; but fully rewarding family hits no less. Remember your audience.
Do you have a piece of work I could see of yours? I'm always looking for ideas, it would also help me to see where you are coming from. In 1992 I produced Advanced Broadcast Camera Techniques on VHS. It was a big seller, and had enough sales for a part 2 follow up video. I may do a new HD version, so i'm always open for ideas. Also what did you mean when you say remember your audience? Perhaps I didn't do it enough. Did you see the 61 techniques video I did on Youtube. Let me know.

Your movie had a very playful and fun vibe. Enjoyed the humor the most.Humor is very hard to do and is under rated.Your signs "will eat for food' made me laugh. Small details like "I am baned from the library" add nice color to story. I wonder if voice over was overdone, most movies show and don't tell too much. Kind of preachy at end. Actors were all enjoyable, good videography, you film in Miami Beach you can get help from me anytime.
Thanks Robb, I made up "banned from the library" because I wanted to show that her roommate is pretty irresponsible. I though it was funny because who gets banned from a library? and why would you? I thought I was the only one who finds it funny, so thanks!
The voice over was overdone- It is really a 16-22 movie shoehorned to 10 minutes for a Arkansas film festival shorts event in January and that is one way I explained away fast, what I wanted to show.
I think the longer version will come across less preachy because there are some funny parts that "Yandi" has which lets her and the audience know that he is retired from the "guru" stuff because of the fakeness of it and she needs to see him as just a real person.

Good question- I have been dong seminars since 1991, and always
at the post seminar Q and A session, the focus goes to
gear. Many times, I tell them that its not about the gear and what they are
wanting can be done with what they have, and they look at me like
"easy for your to say, you have the good gear". So I wanted to
prove to all(and me) , that what I was saying was true. And now I
can show them too. Then I can get their minds back on what counts
most. Story, framing etc.
