I grew up in Tyler, one set of grandparents lived in Shreveport so I got to see a lot of wrestling live. I was in a blue shirt 7 rows back. That was the only time I got to see the UWF after they left Shreveport.
those were the fukn days man when wrestling was not a soap opera like it is today. those are the days where wrestling happened in the ring not in the locker rooms, those were the days where wrestling was more fighting and less talking. those were da fkn days where wrestling was real wrestling, fake but exiting to watch
Terry Taylor WAS A GREAT WRESTLER in his day, Jake Roberts WAS A GREAT WRESTLER also, but their respective careers went down the drain when they joined McMahon's circus. McMahon's greed ruined wrestling. I hope and pray that one day the territorys return. McMahon won't be on top forever....
@gldtng0867 I'll agree with you about Terry but Jake was amazing in the WWF. He drew good money and did some amazing work especially his run with Randy Savage which was the best heel work I've ever seen.
Taylor's leg was "under the rope". It's a way of helping protect Jake's heat. Also, it plants the seed for either of them to turn after a controversial finish. In 2001, a variation of this was used at Unforgiven in the Stone Cold vs. Kurt Angle main event. Austin "tapped out" to the ankle lock, but his arm was under the ropes. Hebner missed it and, later, refused to overturn the decision.
Tulsa convention center, like it was yesterday. My 17 yr old ass raising hell for Jake. Nobody cut a promo like Jake. Wish I could find JakeDDT Drak Journey.
Does anyone remember the match Taylor & Roberts had in Mid South in '85 when Jake DDT'd Terry on that steel chair.iI think it was for the Mid South TV Title (that little gold medal).
@soln4suhreborn Yup, I just watched that match again a few days ago. Great stuff ! Taylor's head hit the chair legit and he may have bleed the hard way. I have it on DVD.
this event was taped in okc at the myriad which is now the cox convention center. I remember going to this event with my dad along time ago. It's too bad wrestling isn't as good as it used to be.
I grew up in Louisiana watching Mid-South wrestling. If this match would have been in a WWF(E) ring, it wouldn't have gone over well by today's standards. But back then, there was more ring psychology so slower matches came across with great energy and importance because there was more of a build to the stories and a clear cut conclusion to story lines. You never really see this today, unfortunately.
@sweet60 I'm fromShreveport & I also grew up watching Mid-South. Even went to alot of the matches live. Its a shame that this type of wrestling would fail today.
@sweet60 I agree. I'm from Shreveport so growin up, Mid-South was THE show to watch. Its a shame that technical wrestling like this can't go over. Actually, I think it still could but, Vince won't do it. Dixie isn't much better IMO>
The best move the WWE ever made, was hiring Jim Ross as Their Main Wrestling Announcer. I'm sure the WWE have more than one, but without Jim Ross, The Announcing Department of the WWE would be very hollow.
I remember this being the last time I saw Jake on Mid South tv. I was so pissed he lost to the pretty boy Taylor who seemed to come back out of nowhere. Could've sworn this was for the TV title though.
To me, Nov 1985 to May or so 1986 Mid South/UWF wrestling was the best ever..Too bad those days are gone, and hope Watt's wife doesn't sell the tape library to Vince...
I agree completely, to me its the greatest fed ever, they were doing everything right, that cartoonish WWF wasn't, 2 main heel stables, Devastation Inc. and Freebirds. Terry Taylor, Dibase, Dr. Death, Hacksaw Jim, Chris Adams, The Missing Link, Eddie Gilbert, and Sting. The next closest thing to me would be World Class.
What you see here was the start of the Jake Roberts sendoff to the WWF. Within a week of this airing, he had left Mid-South -- and, for better or worse, the rest is history.
Those were some HUGE crowds in Tulsa when Watts first moved the TV tapings there from Shreveport. --the DDT was the hottest move in wrestling at the time--
good job Terry..............

I guess Terry Taylor no longer 'rules the roost' in TNA.

If memory serves, this was Jake's blowoff match on Mid South TV. He would appear on WWF TV within the month afterward.

@ltrott3 Yep. This was his Mid-South swan song. It was the end of the Mid-South era and begininning of the UWF era, too.

It doesn't have to be "on" the rope, it just has to break the plane created by the ropes.
