May as well be for NZ's Pike River mine - opened in 2008, closed in 2010 after 29 men were entombed within. It isn't an industry of your grandfather's day, people - it remains a risky industry in our time.
This song reminds me of my lovely hard-working Father and all the miners who dug out coal from the bowels of the earth to maintain other industries reliant on coal for fuel and our homes too of course. The Miners were the backbone of this country - destroyed by thatcher helped along by the shameful actions of the steelworkers. This song makes me feel proud of who and what I am . RIP JOHN YOUNG 1922-1972.
a version of this song has been dedicated to the four good men who sadly lost their lives at gleision colliery, it is on sale at tesco for £3 and all proceeds go to the miners fund, it is an honour to live in pontardawe and to see all the love and well wishes from all over the world
I am a Scotsman living in England. My dad was born in Gaspereaux on PEI. I love this woman's music. Gives me a connection to a country I can only dream about
My dad worked underground in the Nickel mines in Sudbury Ontario to support his wife and 9 kids. He was a university trained safety engineer but it was his job to run to the cave ins and accident's when they happened and they happened at the rate of 2 a week during WWII. It was his job to inform the widows and he said he soon learned to bring a priest and Doctor with him because they would always faint when they saw him coming. He is now 99 and fit as can be.
My dad was a coalminer for 35 years in New Zealand on the west coast, He`s 87 now and is still active. He would be one of the few coalface miners left.He loves this song,Some of his mates were killed in the Strongman mine disaster in 1967.Some of his mates were killed in the Dobson mine when he worked there,. It was a hard life but he always said to me that he liked the hard work and the special camaraderie that was with the miners.
I come from a wee mining village called The Redding in Falkirk Scotland and this Saturday is the yearly trbute to 162 miners that were killed in the local colliery in the disaster of 1932. Every family in the village lost people that day R.I.P to the BRAVES OF THE REDDING.
there's a version of this song out there somewhere from the TV show "Stars in their Eyes". The lady that sang it was on doing this song and they brought her local colliery choir from home to sing with her. It had always been her dream to sing with the local male voice choir and this was her only chance. It is so amazing if anyone has access to it PLEASE POST IT.

After working in the Mines for 45 years, this song brings real tears to my eyes!...
During my career, I experienced the sightsof sweat, toils, injuries, and even death...
neverthless, the cammarady was something very unique, and can only be found in the bowels of the earth.....Each time I hear this meaningful song, so beautifully sung by Rita MacNeil, I think of all my friends who sadly paid the ultimate price, to keep the home fires burning!.....
Nigel4784 respect to you my friend,a very touching song, miners are sadly forgotten here in england but i often go to the old colliery towns in the north, these were a hard breed of man.
My wife and I first heard this being sung beautifully in a karaoke bar a few years ago while on holiday and loved it! Wonderful tribute to miners everywhere. Thanks for uploading.
The first time I heard this sonf=g I loved it. It has never changed. I am now singing it to my nine month old daughter. Thanks Rita for this beautiful song.
In Loving Memory of William Peter Pearce Beloved husband of Irene Loving father of Ann, Lynda, Denise, Mark and Neville Respected father in law Much loved grand father of Scott, Sian, Mathew, Vickie, Cheyne, Luke, Nathan, Carl and Danny and dear brother. Called to rest Tuesday, 21st December 2010 aged 74 years <3
My girlfriend back in 1989 used to play this song a lot on tape. She bought me a copy when she realised how much I liked it too. I still have it today.
We remained friends, and when appropriate, but not cheating, we remained lovers, up until she passed away recently.
She came from the Tiwi islands north of Darwin. I miss you. 'Palingari baby'.
@pittycross I AM REALLY SAD FOR YOUR LOSS, LIFE CAN BE SO CRUEL..I HOPE YOU WILL FIND COMFORT IN HER MEMORY & WHAT YOU WERE ABLE TO SHARE TOGETHER WITH HER..
My heart goes out to all the families, friends and loved ones from the mining disaster.
I lost my daughter in 1993 and someone told me God could help me. After 3 weeks of praying and seeking Him, He answered me and took away my grief and sorrow, and replaced it with joy and peace in a split second..He just flooded me with His love....amazing

You know, after all these years, you would think mine disasters and cave-ins would be a thing of the past, but NO, they still happening. I could not do that job, not in a million years. Cheers to the miners!! xo
This should be re released, for the chilli miners and our boys too!! many lost there lives in our country that we forget! mining for the country, what a tribute it would be! to all miners lets say thanks!! xx
what a treasure Rita Is and with this song strikes at the heart of everyone who has ever known a miner.
My grandpa was one and he had retired just before the bump in Springhill, NS but died shortly after, I'm sure the coaldust took him like so many others that have gone before or after him.
@cfems alright mate i meant that there were a lot more miners that have actually died just because you dont give up doesnt make you a hero and as one who works in construction there are hundreds die doing their job still not heroes people who lay down their lives for others ARE heroes this is what i was talking about
The late Peter Tibbs would be happy to see that his video is doing so well. He was a follower of Rita MacNeil, and has done a few other video's with her music.
no this is a song for miners from all over that lived and died and never got any recognition these people will be made richer than their country the men who died in mines all over the world were never given this chance they are not heroes they are men who got stuck and were rescued lets not get carried away if it were not for tv nobody would care be honest with yourselves
@tam19681 Unfortunately you really don't know the meaning of this song then, for those of us who grew up in small towns and saw things that should never happened because someone didnt' take the time to listen and ensure safety was a top priority, those miners in chile are heroes because they never gave up hope, and this is what this song represents.
The rescue of the Chile miners was and act of love for our fellow man. The world should take a lesson from this special act of brotherhood. It's a time for peace.
The first time I heard this I was in high school and think of my dad who is a farmer who works his fingers to the bone to feed our family and the rest of the world.
Now I listen to this song and think of Chilean miners who risked their lives despite dangers to make a living and lived to tell the story being the longest group of miners to be rescued.
This song is a tribute to every man or woman who has ever worked in the pits having worked in a coalmine for forty two years I loved every minute of it, and I have never been prouder of the mining industry than I have over this past week with what we witnessed in Chile, what a tremendous rescue operation. Chile can be proud of what has been achieved. God bless them all. CAMBEL

If a movie is made about the miners in Chile, they must use this song. Everyone is a hero from the miners to the rescuers and the government. Rita Macneil has put her passion for the life of the miners into her song. As a Canadian I have never forgotten the mining accident that killed all the26 miners when the Westray MIne exploded in 1992.
@abigailthomas I hope so too - it is so appropriate for what is happening now particularly in Chile - may every soul come back up safely.....I love Rita MacNeil, and this is one of the most amazing songs she has ever written.....The Men of the Deeps are wonderful as well and they are a wonderful addition to this stunning song.
This song is an absolute classic, you must here the version by David Alexander; God Rest he is no longer with us, but he has left a legacy with this song and many more.
What a tribute to all miners past and present all over the world god bless.
My father died of leukaemia in 1991-days before he died he told me that he had listened to a beautiful song on the hospital radio station-he knew that he was going underground, but this song gave him real faith-thank you so much Rita. A very special song for me as long as I am on this earth
Enjoy this clip, and spare a thought for the Chilean miners who won't see the sun for at least two more months. Now, stop complaining about the weather and get out and breathe the air.
I remember going into the uranium mines in Elliot Lake where my uncle was a miner for 30 years. There isn't enough money in the world to make me do a job like that. Just one more reason we should respect and love the men that do. Christ, their balls are so big it's a wonder they can even walk, doing a job like that!
my uncle worked in coal mines underground and he died early in life and every time i hear this song i think of him-god i love her voice-thanks for the clip.
makes me think of Trailer Park Boys, SE4EP8 "Workin Man"

what a treasure Rita Is and with this song strikes at the heart of everyone who has ever known a miner.

What a tribute to miners around the world.

no this is a song for miners from all over that lived and died and never got any recognition these people will be made richer than their country the men who died in mines all over the world were never given this chance they are not heroes they are men who got stuck and were rescued lets not get carried away if it were not for tv nobody would care be honest with yourselves
tam19681 1 year ago
@tam19681 Unfortunately you really don't know the meaning of this song then, for those of us who grew up in small towns and saw things that should never happened because someone didnt' take the time to listen and ensure safety was a top priority, those miners in chile are heroes because they never gave up hope, and this is what this song represents.

@cfems Amen. Miners are a special breed. My granddad was one in Pictou County Albion Coal Mine.
Today we have 30 missing New Zealand miners. I'm praying.

Still the best version, by the songstress herself. What a tribute to all miners, and right now, the light is shinning on the Chilean Miners.
