  • Thats one big moose. Great video. Is the dog a Welsh terrier or Airedale Terrier?

  • @FurrylittlePaws

He's an Airedale Terrier. At the time he was about a year and a half old... now he is full grown and he's a BIG dog, right around the 80 pound mark, solid muscle too!

As for the moose, yes it was big wasn't it? Have you ever seen a moose?

  • @AllAboutMoose I only seen a moose before, but a bit smaller than the one in the video

  • @FurrylittlePaws I guess if you've only ever seen one... then that must have been an exciting moment for you eh?

  • Never tried moose meat before. Would love to

  • @KatiushaVN4

Once you eat moose you'll never eat beef again! Just kidding of course. But I can honestly say that we very seldom buy or eat beef. Once in a while if I am out a a good restaurant I'll order a beef steak... usually tenderloin or New-york striploin.

Moose meat is very lean and naturally fed, therefore is a very healthy meat for humans to eat... another reason to eat moose instead of beef.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Looks like a fun hunting trip!

  • @rquader It sure was. We actually got three moose that year, our best year. We had four tags but decided that with four moose there was enough meat for all. This was the year I really got involved in calling moose. I called in five all together... this year (2011) I managed to call in seven different bulls. How much fun is that! I'll be posting the video for this years hunt in the coming weeks ahead. Be sure to subscribe to our channel so you don't miss out on any!

  • How did you get it out of the field whole without quartering it?

  • @Mr13born79

With this particular moose we were lucky enough to call it right to the edge of a log landing, so we were able to drive right to it. Getting it into the truck was a different story though. I will be posting a video in the coming days that shows: 1) how we got this years moose out whole. 2) how we loaded this years moose into the truck, whole (minus head).

  • @Mr13born79

Out of 25 moose I have been involved in, we have only quartered 2. We carry over 3000 feet of heavy rope so we are able to get a rope out to them. Through a series of pulleys and the use of two way radios we pull them out in one piece. Check out the All-About-Moose website for more information on this. There are some pictures of this method too!

  • @AllAboutMoose Haha... I was imagining a team of 20 8' tall guys packing the thing out tied by the hoofs to a 12 inch diameter spruce pole about 50 feet long.

  • @Mr13born79 LOL My Dad tells me of when he and a hunting partner packed some Canada geese that way. They start swaying... opposing each other, making it all-most impossible to walk. LOL

  • So do you saw down one side of the spine, or do you have to have to cut down through the whole length of it?

  • @sudopudge

Actually this year we changed how we cut it a little and it seemed better. We still use the DeWalt saw but we cut the spine first, from the back.

Stand behind the animal and starting at the tail cut it lengthwise down the center. Have your hunting partner stand facing the chest to guide you to make sure your cut is straight.

We used a butchers handsaw for many years and this will work well too. To use a handsaw just make sure you don't apply too much downward pressure.

  • @sudopudge

We cut right through the center... this helps to keep it balanced!

  • lol pause it at 4:26. The airedale looks silly. Nice video guys. Happy hunting.

  • @tlartis

Ha Ha, he is quite the character. We got a real nice bull this year, called it to 18 feet!

  • so after halfing it how do you go about portioning it. do you do that at camp or home

  • @JamesBerkey

We break it into quarters just before we transport it to home or the cooler. We separate the half between the third and forth rib.

  • Hey, thanks for the video, me and my friend are gonna go moose hunting and none of us knew how to skin a moose, but thanks to you, I know it was an idiotic thing to do.

  • @MegaNick53

Thanks and good luck with your hunt. Be sure to share your experiences with the rest of us. Post to the moose hunting stories page at All-About-Moose

  • bet all that meat tasted great!

  • @TheOutdoorsman07 Thanks, it sure did. We have been fortunate to eat moose every year for the past 20 odd years... we definitely like it. Not to say we don't like the occasional beef steak too!

  • nice vid! What did you do with the hide? treat it yourselves or to a professional?

  • @highflydanger Thanks. Normally we do not take the hide. We leave it in the forest for the little animals to use the fur and skin. We really have no use for the hide ourselves. However, last season I saw a local first nations tribe that was will to take any unwanted hides. We may look into this for this year.

  • Hey @biggamer1977, Thanks. We really hadn't planned to put this on Youtube when we made it. We initially recorded this video to show our family and friends how we handle a moose in camp. Now that we have a presence on Youtube. We will be making a conscious effort to make quality videos while at moose camp and while we are moose hunting.
