heheuwish7 is right, oj sImpson was the controversial murder suspect in the 90's, this song is about the biblical/historical sAmpson, a song [supposedly] written to him by his lover delilah. this however is an original song by regina not a cover, the other band's songs are "sampson and delilah", most notably performed by the greatful dead.
the bottom line is noone knows what she meant except for her. whatever it means to you is whatever it means to you and thats all that matters. and if you can't hear her singing stand closer to a speaker. stop complaining and appreciate the music.
We just saw her last night at the Grove in Anaheim....AMAZING...she just sang and sang and sang...she came dressed as "zarro" hahaa, she meant to say "zorro" and she kept saying "i cant see shit with this mask" Hahaha...AMAZING!!!
Imagine you were the singer, would you want people to sing or just stand there looking at you, id rather have people sing along, it'd be the greatest feeling ever.
Well, it probably is the whole "Samson Delilah story" but truly I think there is a bigger point with the song, another sort of personal symbolic.. can't explain what it is, I just think it is meant as a metafor or something?
Somethingawful dot com recently had a "How did you lose your virginity" thread. A user posted a rather lengthy description of his night. Including the fact that he met Regina Spektor and had that experience with her. He said she couldnt pronounce his last name and stopped at Samson.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA everyone is so uptight im glad someone here actually likes this song and jokes like I would. I was going to off myself because i thought I was gay.
basically, samson had all his strength in his hair and was in love with delilah. she cut his hair after being bribed to by the romans so that they could fight against him and capture him. she was a traitor, in other words.
Ugh, why are people singing along with her? That's so lame, you go to the concert to hear the artist, not the retard next to you struggle to match pitch...
i don't know, but i can't understand song's meaning :/ i'm not really good at english, so can anyone tell me a little bit about the song please? i love this song so much <3 thank you
This song talks about a person from the Bible, Samson, and Regina sings as if she were his secret lover, as opposed to his lover in the Bible, Delilah.
She's singing as Delilah. Delilah became his lover but cut his hair (i forgot why exactly) but to cut your hair in his articular sect of judaism (i can't spell) is some sort of sin.
She says "The Bible didn't mention us, not even once." Delilah was mentioned in the Bible, so it's obviously not about her. God made Samson the strongest man in the world, but if he ever cut his hair, he would become as weak as any other man. Delilah cut his hair so the Philistines could defeat him.
Yea that makes sense. I have to agree with you. I've always wondered the part "Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth" part. Like I know what it means but I never read of a "lie" in Samson & Delilah.
@demesaa You've obviously never read the story. Delilah's name is practically synonymous with deception; the tricked Samson into giving up the secret of his strength so she could collect a bribe. I'd argue that you could even take "lie" as a double entendre, i.e. in the sense of deceit and in the sense of "lie with" (sex).
The song is about a comparison between one of her relationships and with a possible first wife of the biblical Samson. The point being that both Regina and Samson could have had successful normal relationships. Consider the possibility of Samson willingly allowing the woman he loved, first wife, to cut his hair to purposefuly lose his strength, a sacrifice to be human. Compare this to Sampsons desire to keep his secret hidden from Delilah.
'Samson' is the correct spelling. I've heard 'Sampson' before, so perhaps this is a local pronunciation, like in how some parts of the country, 'wash' is pronounced, 'warsh'.
What country are you in?! But I know that in Scotland, America and Australia it is Sampson. Oh well, it's a really good song. she has an excellent voice.
Yeah, I like her voice too. I checked on the net and it's spelled 'Samson' in the bible. Not trying to be right, because you actualy inspired me to check and see if I was right.
I think people should shut up in the quiet-song environment so we can hear the artist. If someone was right next to me wailing their version while I was trying to listen to the far superior voice of Regina Fucking Spektor, I would tell them to shut the fuck up. Like when you are listening to recorded music and someone tries to sing along so you say "hey, who sings this?" and they gush (cuz they luv it) "oh! it's ______" and you say "Well why don't you let THEM sing it?!?!"
This song is about another woman who was in love with Samson, a woman who was never mentioned. It is specifically mentioned that Delilah was not the one to cut Samson's hair off. In fact, a big possibility is that it was Delilah's slave.
Either way it's taken from the woman who cut his hair off's perspective, and that person is not Delilah
do any of you even know the story of samson? as in from the bible? old testament? anyone? thats what she's talking about. its not even metaphorical. she's telling a story from the perspective of delilah's character.
wonder bread is white bread, and the whiter the bread the quicker you're dead. what I'm trying to say is, I just discovered Regina Spektor today and I'm liking this.
I agree with the person that said its a metaphor on how Regina betrayed a guy. The i love u first line could mean the guy moved on and is now with another girl. Im pretty sure they didnt have wonderbread back then and i dont think they had scissors back then.
Does anyone else find it annoying when people sing along? I mean, at any other gig I would be joining them. But she has such a beautiful voice that it just detracts from it. Her voice is the main instrutment in her music, so its kinda like going to a classical concert and getting your violin out. It's okay for ones like Uh-Merica and Us though, I guess.
I think that Samson's story is a metaphor of how Regina loved someone and she betrayed him ("the cutting of the hair") but he still loved her ("kissed me til the morning light"). If it was Delilah's POV then "the bible didn't mention us" wouldn't make sense since she is mentioned, and if it was another woman's POV, then that means that Samson's hair was cut twice, which i don't think happened since that would mean he was weak for a while before he met Delilah.
The song is about Delilah. Samson never told anyone else that his hair was the source of his strength. The entire song seems to be how Delilah wished everything could've turned out.
Yeah I agree... i think it's from the POV of someone who loved Samson before Delilah... and if I was there i'd have been singing my ass off; so you can't really say anything.
The point of going to a live gig is the human element, crowd and performer. Imagine how the performer feels with all these 'dumb kids' knowing the lyrics. You can listen to her cd at home in complete, boring uninterrupted silence. It is an amazing thing when the whole crowd joins in, everyone lets go of all their fears and emotions. Try it!
No, the point of going to a live gig is to see the performer perform, as that is what they do. In a quiet, intimate acoustic song, it's proper etiquette (in the same way as when watching an orchestra) to remain quiet and show your appreciation at the end.
Singing along in louder, livelier songs or in a stadium/arena is a totally different situation.
Yea the first thing I noticed is that a could hear a buch of people singing along...and I'm thinkin wow I wonder how this is affecting Regina. I wonder if this is common where people sing out-loud in quiet settings. She seems to perform right through it and tune everybody out. I think people singing out-loud would usually affect performers in a negative aspect.
Well, I suppose that's true, planteh...But I suppose the audience really just couldn't help themselves anymore. It's a really emotional song, after all and a whole bunch of people could probably relate to the song a lot and stuff.
And she didn't seem to be angry...and she did beautifully well too.
The most believed interpretation is that she is the women Samson loved before Delilah. Thats why she says "the history books forgot about us" and "I loved you first" and so on. So it goes Samson was her "sweetest downfall" and Delilah was Samson's. Then she goes on to say that their love slowly faded away, which goes along with the downfall part that they "couldn't bring the columns down" whereas Samson and Delilah did bring the columns down, that's why the histroy books remember them.
Well, yeah, it seems to be from Delilah's perspective, with knowledge of his hair and all. She says that she was unfaithful ("cut his hair"), but he forgave her instead of being angry. So they had a love story rather than a tragic ending, and that's why he "couldn't break the columns down." So, because she loved him, and he forgave her, it's different than the biblical version.
I don't think it is about a women Samson was with before Delilah... unless he had his hair cut off twice! There are other references to Delilah as well, ie the columns coming down.
The song is from Delilah's point of view, REgina's rewritten it to have a happy ending... they're not mentioned in the Bible because the story changed... or at least that's what I think.
dude she's saying they never mentioned them in history or the bible because she stayed with him during his captivity and he didn't feel the need for revenge because he loved her too much to leave her
gah...but the lyrics don't make sense at all, like is the song supposed to be from Delilah's perspective? if so...why would she say they were never mentioned?
