It took me ages to 'get' this song, it was one of the last Smiths songs I didn't really understand, but I adore it now after several proper listens. Maybe that's why the audience was so flat. It was a really hard song to hear first time I think.

@janeypoppy His fits were part of his artwork in a sense. It wasn't because he was throwing a tantrum or something. Not to mention, the degree to which a artist is "good" or "bad" depends upon how much you can relate to their music, which means in a sense that there is no such thing as a bad artist. If you don't like their work, then that's your prerogotive. That doesn't make them bad in any sense.

Morrissey always refused to lip sync on tops of pops or whatever that british show was called, so instead of pretending to perform hes making it blatantly obvious that he isnt really singing. I guess it was his own little loop hole to make himself feel less guilty.

On Top of the Pops during the eighties it was really rare for any performer to sing live, I think it was almost banned by the producers. It was only really in the nineties they brought it back in. I agree with someonenoticedidead, it's morrissey's way of fighting the system I guess!
