It took me ages to 'get' this song, it was one of the last Smiths songs I didn't really understand, but I adore it now after several proper listens. Maybe that's why the audience was so flat. It was a really hard song to hear first time I think.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Ian Curtis greatest front man.......fuck me your funny, joy division are THE worst band ever, I mean they are proper shit.....Ian Curtis was a weirdo who had fits on stage...this does not equate to greatness!!!!!
@janeypoppy His fits were part of his artwork in a sense. It wasn't because he was throwing a tantrum or something. Not to mention, the degree to which a artist is "good" or "bad" depends upon how much you can relate to their music, which means in a sense that there is no such thing as a bad artist. If you don't like their work, then that's your prerogotive. That doesn't make them bad in any sense.
this is probably a stupid question and I'm gonna regret it but where the fuck is his microphone? or was this just mimed for the video? Cause this is just to show what a live show would be like?
@rubberfactorytv Yeah I think the only live show's are jool's holland and the word when that was still on. Yeah thanks for that I was pretty sure it was a top of the pops scenario.
@TheLionsTube Yeah, mimed, like Top of the Tops. As far as I know, Moz didn't like to fake, so he swung flowers or danced instead of holding a dead microphone :)
"I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar that it meant that you were a protest singer. Oh I can smile about it now but at the time it was terrible"
And there are people who can't find the humour in Morrissey's lyrics...
well you have to realise that they were promoting meat is murder here and also the new single which noone had heard before this appeared on tv its genius at the time
i like that! quite true too! but it's not a performance- morrissey doesn't perform no! He just goes up there and does his thing- or something like that anyway!
Mozgirl! We cannot blame Thatcher for everything, evil fucking witch that she was! Good to see Moz having a go though. Within two years of this, dancing (of a sort) would be cool again.
@pme96 Ye thats because not very many people actually liked the smiths in 1985, what a testament to them now, thats what a band way ahead of their time had to put up with, amazing isnt it ! ?
Hmm, although Johnny Marr is the man for me I do love Morrissey's look in this video - he scrubs up nicely, looking remarkably comfortable in his suit jacket!
For people making such a big deal about the release date of it and the label... it clearly says JAPAN on is and the S in the corner is from a Japanese music station so I think we can probably assume that it was released in Japan in 87 by Warner.
TOTP was dubbed.. Morrissey hated that so he refused to use a mic...
Have you ever seen their first performance on TOTP (This Charming Man)? Moz dances around the stage like he's got a raccoon in his pants! It's really funny!
For a start this was NOT relesed in 87 it was the first airing of their new song this was 1985, no one had heard this before ! this was 1985 and amazing at the time
This is my all time favorite song of the Smiths Forever, I feel so bad for my mom she Had a chance to get like two rows From The stage Of a morressy Concert but she didnt get the Call Cause of a reason i dont have enough space to type so now she has Row BB instead of row B
Morrissey always refused to lip sync on tops of pops or whatever that british show was called, so instead of pretending to perform hes making it blatantly obvious that he isnt really singing. I guess it was his own little loop hole to make himself feel less guilty.
On Top of the Pops during the eighties it was really rare for any performer to sing live, I think it was almost banned by the producers. It was only really in the nineties they brought it back in. I agree with someonenoticedidead, it's morrissey's way of fighting the system I guess!
Am I the only one who saw the spelling fail at the beginning? "Shakespear's Sister"?

Amen. Whatever works for ya, but Bon Scott, Michael Hutchence, Peter Garrett...must be somethin' in the Aussie water. ;-)
From the Smiths era/sound, Richard Butler from the Psych Furs a much better front man. Ditto Echo's Ian McCulloch.
