The Prophet was a great poet. I'm amused.

No he (PBUH) was not a poet as is made clear by following Quranic verses

[26:224] As for the poets, they are followed only by the strayers.

[36:69] What we taught him (the messenger) was not poetry, nor is he (a poet). This is but a formidable proof, and a profound Quran.

[69:40] This is the utterance of an honorable messenger (Jibraeel).

[69:41] Not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.

So neither is Quran a book of poetry nor was Prophet (PBUH) a poet.

Quran is a book of guidance for those who are righteous and fear Allah.

Prophet (PBUH) was here to explain the God's word to humans. As such he (PBUH) was a guide. He (PBUH) had been given an ability to speak concise words with loads of meaning as the speaker also explains.
