  • Such a great song. Shame the video quality is the same as a Toaster.

  • Elliott Forever in our hearts

  • Never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow.

  • His voice sounds fantastic in this recording, one of the best I've heard. Love you Elliott.

  • Love how "fans" say how great he was and a great inspiration and spell Eliott with one T

    Two t's mother fuckers

  • @besto76 There are also 2 L's in ELLIOTT. So....

  • @besto76

It wasn't even his real name. Y'know, if you'd stop caring about such trivial things you probably wouldn't be living in your mother's basement.

  • @besto76 Yeah, those people should be shot.

  • simply one word descibes Elliot.......AMAZING!

  • How can one person be so amazing...

  • I recommend every fan listen to the Morning Is Eclectic radio sessions ES completed in CA to promote Either/Or. Elliott is my main inspiration. Check out my songs at Youtube.Com/GlobetownArt.

  • This might be my favorite Waltz #2, or it could be the weed and rum I've had. RIP

  • Around 1:35-40 the shadow of the neck of the guitar looks like a bad ass sleeve tattoo

  • I'm doing just fine. Hour to hour note to note.

  • I know how blessed I am that I was able to spend time with him, alone. . and feel his deep essence. . I miss him so much. . "here it is the revenge to the tune, you're no good, you're no good. . ", pretty amazing stuff

  • is this the only song he performed at Jools Holland?

  • This the first song that hooked me when X/O was released, been a Elliott fanatic ever since. Too beautiful for words. Thank God we have his music when we need it. Nothing comes close. RIP.

  • I wish I had the gift Elliott had to turn deep, complex feelings into words and melody. Perhaps, then, I'd be able to write a better comment that would begin to describe how good his music is, how it makes me feel, how it makes my life better. Well, since I don't, I'll just thank you instead, Smith, wherever you are... I owe you a big, sincere, "thank you".

  • A lost soul gone home

  • a true sense of musical genius. why does music with true meaning always seems to stay behing the curtain.

  • STARES INTO SPACE LIKE A DEAD CHINA DOLL..... beautiful .

  • it kinda looks like waking life doesnt it. but i dont think it is man.

    elliot smith godbless

  • is this from Waking Life ?

  • a nice performance.

  • Elliott Smith is so so good. R.I.P. E.S.

  • Damnit - every video is so focused on his face - I don't give a crap what his facial expression was - I want to see the chords -

Mental note - if anyone ever see's an amazing artist like Elliott Smith, focus on his chord hand - nothing else matters.

I just like to play - and visual theft is the easiest way to decipher his chords.

  • brilliant. you soulless, muso twat

  • What crawled up your ass? How did my statement possibly offend you? Perhaps you should just calm the hell down, life's too short to worry so much.

  • I saw him 3 times in holland. he is amazing

  • he WAS amazing

    rest in peace :*(

  • I got into him way to late, just about 6 months before he passed, and I wish I would've known of him for all those years. IMO the best singer/songwriter since Nick Drake. Never thought to search for this but glad I did. Fabulous just brilliant. Thanks for posting.

  • Same, I first heard him in Good Will Hunting and thought he was great but did not get into his music until right after his passing... now I have ALL his stuff, it's weird how that happens.

  • I came about it the same way. I heard him in Good Will Hunting and others were getting into him at the time but I didn't discover the greatness 'til he was gone. It's a shame how life works.

  • hmmm, standing... he looks a bit more eligible like that - the secret key to why he was never famous!

  • What do you mean "eligible?"

  • Comment removed

  • what?

you appear to infer that what i said about 'fame' implied that it was what every musician wants, or that he was worse off not being famous. read my comment again. all i said was he looks more like a typical rock star standing up.

  • when was this?

  • it was 1999. i wish i knew about him then, but i was 9 years old.

  • wow he was on jools, thats awesome.

  • .i realy liked a girl that i always saw arrond and never had the courage to talk to her. now i have moved away i will never know her. i wrote a song about it the other day but it is terrible. some people have such a great way with words like elliott. "she shows no emotion at all. she stares into space like a dead china doll. im never gonna know you now. but im gonna love you any how." some people dont have it. but some people just do. what ever IT is

  • go put your song up on youtube! any song can be loved by millions, it just takes start up courage on the part of the artist.

  • haha trust me you dont want to hear that one. painfully bad lyrics. well i have my first gig coming up soon. so if i dont get jeered off stage i will get a camera and throw some up.

  • I want to hear it!

  • i had no idea he was on Jools!

this is the best live song i've seen by him.

  • Suchhhh a sad but pretty song. . . RIP Elliott. . . .

  • How long ago was this?

  • miss u so much elliot!!!!!!

  • 2:39 is incredible.

  • wow this is really great. perfect vocals and picking. he also looks great. love this video!

  • PERFECT

  • looks like elliott put a lot of effort into singing this in this live performance. prolly the best performance i've heard him do of this song. so goooooood.

  • tell mister man... with theyre impossible plans.... to just

  • ...basically i love this song so so much. so much love. such a beautiful person, beautiful music. he was amazing at what he created,, expressed into the world for existence to hear..

xo walts 2 .., miss him dearly

  • Ya no podré conocerte ahora, pero te querré de todas formas.

  • omg! havent seen elliot this sharp ever. the vocals and finger picking is gold. So beautiful.

  • Superb

  • Wierd seeing him on British TV. he always seemed like he should have been a british songwriter, very Beatles-esque

    RIP

  • gives me goose bumps everytime

  • This is definately one of his best songs... The chorus is absolutely amazing...

  • i love you.

  • ...why do someone well admired and loved by many and so talented like elliot smith had gone too soon?... and a loser worthless like me is still alive...irony?

  • The problem is that people think they are worthless but in fact they are admired and loved by so many. You are not worthless.

  • I went to this wedding. The wedding waltz was this one. Beautiful. Smith was so deep. So true. So hard. So sad...

  • Kind of a weird song to play at a wedding.. ..you'd hope the groom and bride wouldn't have these kinds of regrets by that point. =P

  • Very weird song to play at a wedding.

  • yes that is what I told my friend who got married. They just selected it for the waltz melody, obviously not understood what the words say

  • when i get married i'm playing this song, followed by mastodon followed by ween followed by 2 live crew followed by just 30 minutes of fart noises

  • Pretty sure you're never going to get married if you tell your fiancee this plan.

  • It was her idea!!

  • It was her idea? Hang on to that woman.

  • @TheAbsolutionHowl It's about his mom

  • R.I.P Elliot

  • awesome,awesome,awesome!...

  • muy linda cancion...

  • 'I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow'

  • Theres something in this video that makes me wanna cry. He looks so sad here and the bad quality kinda makes it different, not bad. Elliott <3

  • i only gave 4 stars because the quality is really bad

  • his music is what should matter.. and the music quality didn't sound THAT bad.

  • elliott smith was amazing. i'll miss him so much

  • i do too

  • TY Scarf66...you found the beauty.

I'm glad folks find a voice here, and I'm glad Eliott Smith's choice of poison is derided ( I recently got a request for 'Heroin' to be a friend on MySpace. I denied it). Still...still...what about the song? Simply, one of the gems of the last 20 years, as was its' author. Just listen again, forget the waste and the promise...just listen to the song.

  • 'I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow'

  • why cant anyone comment about an elliott smith song without talking about suicide, it pisses me off, if u like suicide so much go read Durkheim.

  • his songs break my hearts a little bit always.

  • I like this guy. He was the musical voice of the end of the 20th century.

  • more like he was the musical voice of all time

  • I think he sounds great.

  • On the contrary. His music makes me happy. I don't think of his shallow, tragic death or the situations he put himself in. I never knew him. I think of his uniqueness, the arrangement, the composition, the neverending wordplay throughout his career. To me...The tragedy of his life makes the beauty of his music shine even brighter. Empathy is one thing, but if you feel suicidal that's not empathy that's you. Fight it and get prof. help for some mental stability. Sorry if i'm blunt.

  • I appreciate the sentiment behind this. Some people find that bluntness to be typical surrounding the subject, but this music definitely needs to be enjoyed for its outstanding and original arrangement and technique, not just the emotion behind the lyrics. It takes a lot of optimism to give such mixed emotions such depth and character. Exactly the heart of stability if you ask me, variance and acceptance.

  • He was great and his passing was tragic. But his sadness brings me strength.

This coming from a guy that listens to (real) punk and Black Metal.

  • and that's makes you more?....

    black metal its shit

  • I DON'T LIKE METAL

  • shallow?

  • by whatever do you mean? Choosing to see the beauty in the face of tragedy is hardly shallow.

  • you said 'his shallow, tragic death'

    and i asked shallow?

    explain...

  • its really just my opinion that suicidal people have chosen a shallow option in their life. ie: not caring about those around you and what u do to them by doing harm to yourself. hope that clears up my opinion on the subject matter

  • not really

your generalisation of 'suicidal people' speaks volumes about your opinions

  • not literally, you can write the volume on the cases of exceptions for the universe if you care to. ie: terminal, constant pain, w/e. Dr. Kevorkian already beat ya to it tho. Stereo-typing would be wrong. Profiling is another thing. Who's to say in elliott's case...no one. i may have overstepped my boundary. my glitch

  • yea who stabs themself twice?

  • Someone who wants to make sure.

  • lol 2nd line of the month!

  • Don´t you think you have the right to make decisions about your own life then?

  • isn't that self evident? don't you prove that to yourself everyday? rhetorical at best...why reply? I chose to...duh. It's just a point of view on how it's affected me in my life. Everybodies different. Open your mind and let others opinions just fall by the wayside if you don't agree on just one biased, complicated issue. At least have an opinion...just don't dumb it down to simple logic so u can feel validated about 1 + 1 = 2.

  • I´m not sure I´m getting you, but I´m certainly not attempting to simplify life or anything, by my comment. I just think that if theres one thing you shouldnt be blamed for being egoistic about, it´s your own life.

  • idk what i can say. i'm pro-choice, but i'm all for exhausting all other options in your current life b4 checkin out for the big powerball (lottery) machine in the sky. in elliot's case i didn't know him, but damn the man had talent and potential that surely went untapped when he left the living. he made life more beautiful...that's all, really

  • I absolutly love Elliot Smith, but its wrong of you to try to blame a bad performance on his depression. Being depressed is horrible, but you can't blame everything that happens in your life on it, it doesn't work this way. His voice was off that night, because his voice was off, plain and simple. Not because his life was painful, or because he has depression. Even in this, with his voice shaky ,he still sounds absolutely amazing. Its all about how his voice harmonizes with the melodies.

  • It sounds like what cigarettes do to my voice, personally, so it could be from those. Which brings us right back to despair, the reason poets smoke.

  • His voice might be "weak"(NOT) but the importance of his voice is the emotions that transmits.

This is no singing competition.Really good performances are about emotions. If you want long sustained notes watch American idol

The beauty of Elliott was his lovely voice and haunting melodies

  • i dont want to insult his musical abilities because he is arguably the best songwriter of his generation but i cant help but be of the opinion his voice made his music to some extent. like you said its some spiderweb haunting ethereal melody, it is kind of a sad sorry discord that makes emotion into something real.

  • I agree, his voice made his music better.

  • Yeah I agree with that. I'd rather see a passionate performence than some dude belting out high long notes.

  • Elliott's songs just make me feel like crying,do you guys feel the same..? I get a bit drunk, then I listen to Elliott, and suddenly I'm feeling like suicide... They're a big help tome, but at the same time these songs just make me want to die... I'm not sure if that's what Elliott had in mind

  • I suggest.. not drinking while listening to Elliott then. But yeah, they bring up so many emotions that vary so drastically from song to song.

  • i feel that elliott meant them to be a happy sorrow. idk if that makes sense but somehow it seems that while each song is somber in itself perhaps there is some joy in accepting oneself for what they are and accepting that life sucks a lot of the time and one man's experience and perception of it can be shared with billions of other people with something so elegant and intricate as a song. so i have felt that its a sweet sorrow, like medicine that causes more illness in a way, still it helps.

  • I never actually "felt" music before I heard Elliott.

I now separate all music like this: "Music" in one category, and "Elliott Smith" in the other.

    R.I.P. Elliott.

  • Britney sucks, she doesnt have ANY songs, they belong to the songwriters she just sings them.

  • queen...you have a point. an inspiration for many to come. that was what his music was and is for. somebody will pick up what he did and carry on.

  • This is true. I was speaking somewhat in hyperbole. Its just not fair.

  • The fact that he is gone and Britney is still here is one of music's greatest tragedies.

    Man had a gift.

  • I doubt any of it gets you much closer to God. But, I fancy your just kidding.

    Elliott makes me cry.

  • never gonna know you now but I'm gonna love you anyhow.... miss you.

  • thats just an opinion, which I highly disagree with. Playing with George Harrison doesn't make you God, it makes you God's friend.

  • just amazing!!! what a talent

  • i love you

  • terrible audio quality. Did you tape a tape or something?

  • hes up ther with radiohead!

  • they were on the same show?

  • LOVE ELLIOT SOOOO SO MUCHHH MISSSS HIM!! :( whywhywhy why did he have to go..miss him soo much

  • Elliot faked his death and is living with Bruce Lee and Tupac on some island....

  • I thought he was hanging out with Elvis? Holy Smokes, the 1st time I herd this song, I was so f'n confused as to what it waz! lolzr

  • lets hope so.

  • Elliott is GOD

  • Oh hell I wish you were still here, Elliott

  • You can't really compare The Beatles and Elliott Smith at all. Both sounds are musical genius and debating if one is better then the other is not going to get you anywhere.

  • wtf?? i cant believe you's are even fighting about who was the greatest musican...the beatles and elliot are both amazing. i love elliot smith..this is one of my most favouritest songs..what a beautiful artist he was..and i miss him dearly

    r.i.p elliot...

  • Elliott would laugh at someone who said he was better than the beatles..he owes everything to them...god..

  • Elliot Smith shows loads of beatles elements in his chord structure, any one who trys to say they wern't inspired by the greatest song writers of all time are the morons.

  • ...You do know Elliott Smith is dead and that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles are alive right? And that Elliott Smith owes alot to the Beatles, and they were his favorite band.

  • how can you take the greatest pop musicians ever and just put a carrot between them like that?

  • Elliott himself would beat you down for that himself. He listened to the Beatles frequently since he was four.

  • oh rly?!?? no shit?!?!? (sarcasm, btw). still doesn't mean he wasn't better than them...

  • It's a shame your a fan of such a great artist...you probably don't even understand the beauty of his music.

  • ha, so by saying that i consider him to be one of the best (if not the best) singer-songwriter ever (even moreso than the beatles) means that i don't understand the beauty of his music? get real, dude.

  • Yes you ignorantly say he is better than the songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney when ironically it's totally possible that without the Beatles Elliott would never have began writing songs, or at least wrote songs with the melodies he has.

  • so it's your position that it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to be influenced by someone and not be better than them...so there has never been any cultural/artistic progress ever?!?!?!

  • No I'm saying that you can't really compare him to The Beatles. He was an amazing songwriter...he owed a lot to the Beatles, but he also had his own style...but he did not have the impact or influence that The Beatles had they changed the face of music for ever.

What Elliott has done is write beautiful songs that do have an impact and influence on people's lives...and I do believe in the next 10 or 20 years we will see a lot of his elements in new songwriters works.

  • the way i see it is that he took a lot of elements from the beatles and combined them in a better, more compelling way, making him a superior artist. i'd be curious to see how a new generation of singer-songwriters will interpret his work. i'm waiting for mainstream audiences to be like "oh shit!!! who was this guy?!?!? he's fucking awesome!!!" in like 10 years or something.

  • You see the problem with your argument is it makes people take sides. Example. I love Bob Dylan and have done since I was 15 (I'm 45). I also love Elliott Smith and have done since I was 40. His music is magically human, a true achievement, absolutely beautiful. And should I say Bob is better than Elliott or vice-versa? That doesn't mean anything to me. Is Mozart better than Beethoven? Is Faulkner better than Hemingway? There is no comparison because here's none to be made.

  • Love you Elliott, wish you were still here :( Your songs are still making me feel

  • i'm tired.

    xo mom.

  • love elliott!!! very few can compare to this. wish you were still here. randomly i came accross a kid who just started out i think and he does home recordings, very reminisant of early elliott. i think its myspace backslash benklamm. definetly different, but similar recording style i think. love u elliott

  • We missed you Elliott. Thank you so much for those beautiful songs you wrote. RIP xxx

  • don't insult him gaijin8811... the beatles are great and while elliott was heavily influenced by them, he had an original style of his own which strayed from the cookie cutter chord progression most beatles songs used...

  • don't insult him gaijin8811... the beatles are great and while elliott was heavily influenced by them, he had an original style of his own which strayed from the cookie cutter chord progression most beatles songs used...

  • i'm not sure saying that it's on the level of the beatles was meant to be an insult...

  • could fit right into the beatles songbook

  • he is so missed. great song. much feeling. love him.

  • elliott smith is a fucking legend.

  • "She appears composed, so she is, I suppose"

Only Elliott Smith can make this line so fucking poetic, man. The most amazing songwriter ever, I think. I think this son
