This the first song that hooked me when X/O was released, been a Elliott fanatic ever since. Too beautiful for words. Thank God we have his music when we need it. Nothing comes close. RIP.
I wish I had the gift Elliott had to turn deep, complex feelings into words and melody. Perhaps, then, I'd be able to write a better comment that would begin to describe how good his music is, how it makes me feel, how it makes my life better. Well, since I don't, I'll just thank you instead, Smith, wherever you are... I owe you a big, sincere, "thank you".

i feel that elliott meant them to be a happy sorrow. idk if that makes sense but somehow it seems that while each song is somber in itself perhaps there is some joy in accepting oneself for what they are and accepting that life sucks a lot of the time and one man's experience and perception of it can be shared with billions of other people with something so elegant and intricate as a song. so i have felt that its a sweet sorrow, like medicine that causes more illness in a way, still it helps.
You can't really compare The Beatles and Elliott Smith at all. Both sounds are musical genius and debating if one is better then the other is not going to get you anywhere.
wtf?? i cant believe you's are even fighting about who was the greatest musican...the beatles and elliot are both amazing. i love elliot smith..this is one of my most favouritest songs..what a beautiful artist he was..and i miss him dearly
Elliot Smith shows loads of beatles elements in his chord structure, any one who trys to say they wern't inspired by the greatest song writers of all time are the morons.
...You do know Elliott Smith is dead and that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles are alive right? And that Elliott Smith owes alot to the Beatles, and they were his favorite band.
ha, so by saying that i consider him to be one of the best (if not the best) singer-songwriter ever (even moreso than the beatles) means that i don't understand the beauty of his music? get real, dude.
Yes you ignorantly say he is better than the songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney when ironically it's totally possible that without the Beatles Elliott would never have began writing songs, or at least wrote songs with the melodies he has.
so it's your position that it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to be influenced by someone and not be better than them...so there has never been any cultural/artistic progress ever?!?!?!
No I'm saying that you can't really compare him to The Beatles. He was an amazing songwriter...he owed a lot to the Beatles, but he also had his own style...but he did not have the impact or influence that The Beatles had they changed the face of music for ever.
What Elliott has done is write beautiful songs that do have an impact and influence on people's lives...and I do believe in the next 10 or 20 years we will see a lot of his elements in new songwriters works.
the way i see it is that he took a lot of elements from the beatles and combined them in a better, more compelling way, making him a superior artist. i'd be curious to see how a new generation of singer-songwriters will interpret his work. i'm waiting for mainstream audiences to be like "oh shit!!! who was this guy?!?!? he's fucking awesome!!!" in like 10 years or something.
You see the problem with your argument is it makes people take sides. Example. I love Bob Dylan and have done since I was 15 (I'm 45). I also love Elliott Smith and have done since I was 40. His music is magically human, a true achievement, absolutely beautiful. And should I say Bob is better than Elliott or vice-versa? That doesn't mean anything to me. Is Mozart better than Beethoven? Is Faulkner better than Hemingway? There is no comparison because here's none to be made.
love elliott!!! very few can compare to this. wish you were still here. randomly i came accross a kid who just started out i think and he does home recordings, very reminisant of early elliott. i think its myspace backslash benklamm. definetly different, but similar recording style i think. love u elliott
don't insult him gaijin8811... the beatles are great and while elliott was heavily influenced by them, he had an original style of his own which strayed from the cookie cutter chord progression most beatles songs used...

Damnit - every video is so focused on his face - I don't give a crap what his facial expression was - I want to see the chords -
Mental note - if anyone ever see's an amazing artist like Elliott Smith, focus on his chord hand - nothing else matters.
I just like to play - and visual theft is the easiest way to decipher his chords.

i feel that elliott meant them to be a happy sorrow. idk if that makes sense but somehow it seems that while each song is somber in itself perhaps there is some joy in accepting oneself for what they are and accepting that life sucks a lot of the time and one man's experience and perception of it can be shared with billions of other people with something so elegant and intricate as a song. so i have felt that its a sweet sorrow, like medicine that causes more illness in a way, still it helps.

I never actually "felt" music before I heard Elliott.
I now separate all music like this: "Music" in one category, and "Elliott Smith" in the other.
R.I.P. Elliott.

This is true. I was speaking somewhat in hyperbole. Its just not fair.

The fact that he is gone and Britney is still here is one of music's greatest tragedies.
Man had a gift.

I doubt any of it gets you much closer to God. But, I fancy your just kidding.
Elliott makes me cry.

thats just an opinion, which I highly disagree with. Playing with George Harrison doesn't make you God, it makes you God's friend.

You can't really compare The Beatles and Elliott Smith at all. Both sounds are musical genius and debating if one is better then the other is not going to get you anywhere.
CameronMDdoo 4 years ago 4
wtf?? i cant believe you's are even fighting about who was the greatest musican...the beatles and elliot are both amazing. i love elliot smith..this is one of my most favouritest songs..what a beautiful artist he was..and i miss him dearly
r.i.p elliot...

Elliott would laugh at someone who said he was better than the beatles..he owes everything to them...god..

Elliot Smith shows loads of beatles elements in his chord structure, any one who trys to say they wern't inspired by the greatest song writers of all time are the morons.

...You do know Elliott Smith is dead and that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles are alive right? And that Elliott Smith owes alot to the Beatles, and they were his favorite band.

how can you take the greatest pop musicians ever and just put a carrot between them like that?
headlisthorseman 4 years ago 3
Elliott himself would beat you down for that himself. He listened to the Beatles frequently since he was four.
ElGoodo 4 years ago 2
oh rly?!?? no shit?!?!? (sarcasm, btw). still doesn't mean he wasn't better than them...
realityisfire 4 years ago
It's a shame your a fan of such a great artist...you probably don't even understand the beauty of his music.
ElGoodo 4 years ago
ha, so by saying that i consider him to be one of the best (if not the best) singer-songwriter ever (even moreso than the beatles) means that i don't understand the beauty of his music? get real, dude.
realityisfire 4 years ago
Yes you ignorantly say he is better than the songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney when ironically it's totally possible that without the Beatles Elliott would never have began writing songs, or at least wrote songs with the melodies he has.
ElGoodo 4 years ago
so it's your position that it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to be influenced by someone and not be better than them...so there has never been any cultural/artistic progress ever?!?!?!
realityisfire 4 years ago
No I'm saying that you can't really compare him to The Beatles. He was an amazing songwriter...he owed a lot to the Beatles, but he also had his own style...but he did not have the impact or influence that The Beatles had they changed the face of music for ever.
What Elliott has done is write beautiful songs that do have an impact and influence on people's lives...and I do believe in the next 10 or 20 years we will see a lot of his elements in new songwriters works.
ElGoodo 4 years ago 2
the way i see it is that he took a lot of elements from the beatles and combined them in a better, more compelling way, making him a superior artist. i'd be curious to see how a new generation of singer-songwriters will interpret his work. i'm waiting for mainstream audiences to be like "oh shit!!! who was this guy?!?!? he's fucking awesome!!!" in like 10 years or something.
realityisfire 4 years ago
You see the problem with your argument is it makes people take sides. Example. I love Bob Dylan and have done since I was 15 (I'm 45). I also love Elliott Smith and have done since I was 40. His music is magically human, a true achievement, absolutely beautiful. And should I say Bob is better than Elliott or vice-versa? That doesn't mean anything to me. Is Mozart better than Beethoven? Is Faulkner better than Hemingway? There is no comparison because here's none to be made.

don't insult him gaijin8811... the beatles are great and while elliott was heavily influenced by them, he had an original style of his own which strayed from the cookie cutter chord progression most beatles songs used...
