I don't get it... when I squeeze my abs, my legs sure as hell don't go flying into the air. How am I supposed to lift my legs without using leg muscles? Perhaps I'm a level waaay below "beginner"

I have a back injury that causes chronic pain and every work out I try for pilates causes my back to hurt for days and it wasn't until your video that I realized I was doing it all wrong, this really works if you rely only on your muscles. First work out I've done in years that when I woke up the next morning my and gift worse than my back lol and to me that's a good thing! Means it is working and that will benefit me so much in the long run! Thank you so much for the video!

Nah, excellent video! I am just beginning in Pilate's and it's such a great workout! You make it look so easy so I was going into this with the assumption that it would be a breeze because it was for beginners....Pssssh!! My burning abs keep reminding me that I was wrong. the burn is good though! It means it's working!

Hi Erin, I work in heavy construction and have had recurring back pain for years. I did this workout and really enjoyed it. I will do some more beginers Pilates and eventually I will go do a class! Thanks for making this accessible for people like me who are a bit hesitant about these kinds of exercise!
@Beauttyful I agree - It is the worst part of the work out. I prefer the "if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it" attitude, and I basically gave up trying to "fix" my breathing. Makes it easier to follow Erin when you aren't looking at the screen, though!

Hi Starting next week I will be trying to do your 21 day sugar smackdown. I live in Sweden and we have a product here called Wasabröd which I was wondering if I could eat during the 21 days. . If you haven't heard about it, it hard like a cracker but as large as a slice of bread. It's unleavened, made without any sugar, and the one that is pictured on wikipedia is the type I buy, which is the original made of rye. So could I eat it?

Thank you so much for this video. I've tried numerous beginner pilates workouts but just didn't feel i was getting the right feel for it. This is the BEST little workout I've tried yet! The instructions were so easy to follow and I can feel that I've really worked my core.
I really can't remember the last time I did this, I tried yoga, I tried regular working out, all of them just killed me and hurt my wrists or knees or something. But this really worked me out, could you do this 3 times in a row for a daily 30 minute strength training on your abs? I really want to get stronger so I can work out more efficiently and not hurt so much. What are some wrist and neck strengthening exercises?
Watched several of Erin's videos before having the sense to "Sign IN". Thought all my ratings were being taken. She is a fantastic teacher, and explains the need for healthy eating in common sense terms. And, regardless of how STOTT feels about it, I'm definitely staying with her pilates approach; it's perfect for this beginner - her demos are easy to do, and keep me faithful to doing them. I hope she succeeds with this marketing of her program.

@MrKurt1962 I'm sure it's effective for both genders (why not??) and if you have back pain you definitely need to strengthen the core to alleviate that... I know bc I've been through that as well bc my abs weren't strong enough.

Cool how can see how it looks when inhaling...im wanting to learn pilates but seems hard also want to be flexible enough to do the splits Erin do u think can do a instructional video on learning to do the splits/also cartwheels/handstands as to do those would be fun and tone the body.
I really enjoy this work out, but I don't understand the second move. How to you lift your foot without using the mucles in the legs? How can she keep the leg parallel to the floor by using her abs? Am I missing a muscle?
@eizhowa I think(of course I really don't know much about these things) that you have to contract the muscles in your stomach and slowly, hardly making any effort at all, lift your leg. I don"t really know if, when doing this, you use the muscles in your leg or not, but anyway...hope it helped a bit!

Hi Erin! I am interested in trying out pilates- your videos look super! I have one question: will pilates help strengthen my muscles and give me some muscle defintion? @SilenceisGolden77 If you whant to build a little more muscle mass, a bit of regular wheight training with light wheights and many reps would help.
But i would still recommend pilates as a supplement, since it does tighten all the right places and strenghtens ones core.
Core training influences ones balance, heightens regular movement by enabling the use of smalle muscles, besides core training strenghtens muscles near the spine, and can therefore prevent back injuries.
the leg lift things make my back hurt, like the middle of my back. If I just lift my legs it doesn't hurt my back, but I also feel like it isn't effecting my core muscles. If I "squeeze" my abs, it hurts my back. What am I doing wrong? I'm a teen, and I don't really have any back problems, but I'm afraid to hurt my back by doing those.
I'm a STOTTi nsstructor what the hell are you??????!! Pull abs in tight, table top don;t want legs to work well we want hip flexors and quads to work to keep legs up for starters. your ab work awful obliques pelvis wobbling everywhere reverse curls looked like yr knees did move!!
interesting method of marketing yourself - going around to all the pilates instructors who post videos on youtube and condescending, ridiculing and bullying them with your "what the hell is that? this isn't real pilates. pull in your abs. i'm a STOTT pilates instructor etc." I wonder how STOTT would feel about such an alienating approach? good luck building your following!
@gailadams1 If your so talented take the time to make/ post a video so others and rip your methods apart. At least she's taking her valuable time to teach and help people, while you are playing Roger and Ebert. I've never met an instructor who was so negative! I feel bad for your students, that is if you even have any.

Thank you so much for this video. I've tried numerous beginner pilates workouts but just didn't feel i was getting the right feel for it. This is the BEST little workout I've tried yet! The instructions were so easy to follow and I can feel that I've really worked my core.

I really can't remember the last time I did this, I tried yoga, I tried regular working out, all of them just killed me and hurt my wrists or knees or something. But this really worked me out, could you do this 3 times in a row for a daily 30 minute strength training on your abs? I really want to get stronger so I can work out more efficiently and not hurt so much. What are some wrist and neck strengthening exercises?

Watched several of Erin's videos before having the sense to "Sign IN". Thought all my ratings were being taken. She is a fantastic teacher, and explains the need for healthy eating in common sense terms. And, regardless of how STOTT feels about it, I'm definitely staying with her pilates approach; it's perfect for this beginner - her demos are easy to do, and keep me faithful to doing them. I hope she succeeds with this marketing of her program.

love pilates I'm a beginner but can already see a difference it's helping me with weights as well the more you can control your pelvic muscles the better your weight workout will be oh and I'm tired of people saying that pilates is only simply stretching

@MrKurt1962 I'm sure it's effective for both genders (why not??) and if you have back pain you definitely need to strengthen the core to alleviate that... I know bc I've been through that as well bc my abs weren't strong enough.

I really enjoy this work out, but I don't understand the second move. How to you lift your foot without using the mucles in the legs? How can she keep the leg parallel to the floor by using her abs? Am I missing a muscle?

@eizhowa I think(of course I really don't know much about these things) that you have to contract the muscles in your stomach and slowly, hardly making any effort at all, lift your leg. I don"t really know if, when doing this, you use the muscles in your leg or not, but anyway...hope it helped a bit!

i see this video was made in 08 but this is just what i am wanting.....i`m a lil on the thick side and i`ve been dieting and excersizing since the 1st of the year and so far i`ve lost only 30 lbs. my goal from the beginning has been to lose 75 lbs by or before the end of the year. i like your video`s and so excited to reach my goal with your workouts. thanks so much for all your help....and if there is anything else i can do to help me reach my goal by all means let me know......

Hi Erin! I am interested in trying out pilates- your videos look super! I have one question: will pilates help strengthen my muscles and give me some muscle defintion? I am naturally slim (ectomorph) and want to look toned and healthy but not lanky. Thanks SIG (silenceisgolden77)- keep up the good work!

@SilenceisGolden77 If you whant to build a little more muscle mass, a bit of regular wheight training with light wheights and many reps would help.
But i would still recommend pilates as a supplement, since it does tighten all the right places and strenghtens ones core.
Core training influences ones balance, heightens regular movement by enabling the use of smalle muscles, besides core training strenghtens muscles near the spine, and can therefore prevent back injuries.

the leg lift things make my back hurt, like the middle of my back. If I just lift my legs it doesn't hurt my back, but I also feel like it isn't effecting my core muscles. If I "squeeze" my abs, it hurts my back. What am I doing wrong? I'm a teen, and I don't really have any back problems, but I'm afraid to hurt my back by doing those.

I'm a STOTTi nsstructor what the hell are you??????!! Pull abs in tight, table top don;t want legs to work well we want hip flexors and quads to work to keep legs up for starters. your ab work awful obliques pelvis wobbling everywhere reverse curls looked like yr knees did move!!

interesting method of marketing yourself - going around to all the pilates instructors who post videos on youtube and condescending, ridiculing and bullying them with your "what the hell is that? this isn't real pilates. pull in your abs. i'm a STOTT pilates instructor etc." I wonder how STOTT would feel about such an alienating approach? good luck building your following!

@gailadams1 If your so talented take the time to make/ post a video so others and rip your methods apart. At least she's taking her valuable time to teach and help people, while you are playing Roger and Ebert. I've never met an instructor who was so negative! I feel bad for your students, that is if you even have any.
