This is an aweeswome video! I just layered my very curly hair the old fashioned way and it took me about an hour and a half. This is SO much easier and makes perfect sense! Excellent video, Carolyn! Thanks for posting! :)
Nope... your not suppose to wet curly hair while cutting for a reason.... its so you can see where it falls when you cut it.. why would you need to measure it when you can see it dry.
@crazygoofu2 I've been cutting my own curly hair for decades now and used both wet and dry methods and had good results either way. I think its more a matter of preference and/or convenience!
@notaditdot, I agree with Crazygoofu2. You happen to know how to handle your own hair type, but curly hair has a wide range of hair shrinkage. The latest techniques for curly hair take shrinkage and mixed curl patterns in account by shaping the curls while dry. And it isn't wise to try and straighten the curl before a cut simply by wetting it down. Hair saturates and dries unevenly so you'll likely take too much curl off some areas and not enough on others.
@CheezInspector I think its a matter of preference also. Personally, I like the idea of getting the cut done all at once instead of taking possible hours and hours to cut each different curl pattern. If your hair isn't long enough, how do you use the 'newer' technique to cut the back? This technique just simplifies it. If you prefer a dry cut, then cut your hair when its dry, using this technique. The ponytail method has been around for years because it works so well! XO Carolyn
@notaditdot, hmmm ... I'm thinking when this works it's because there's less overall curl and/or a pretty consistent curl pattern. Otherwise the ponytail thing has been disastrous for me and for other curlies I know. But yes, if you want to cut corners to save time, someone can attempt the ponytail but should be willing to potentially pay the price for not being more patient IMO. As for how to cut the back w/the "newer" technique, you cut it using the same technique as the rest of the head.
@CheezInspector Well, let me just say that everyone needs to make adjustments for their own curl pattern. I have very curly hair underneath and on the right side of my head. On the left side, not so much... and so I consider myself to be an 'inbetweener' and this cut works for me. Maybe I'm just not as picky as others though. Tolerance has a lot to do with it too I think. If you have shorter hair, your hair in the back won't reach the front to cut it using the newer technique though.
@CheezInspector I just wanted to add that its all good! This conversation is valuable to anyone wanting to use this cut so thanks for bringing up your valid points! XO
Thank you for great instructions ... I wonder if I brought all my hair to front of my forehead at fringe length and used same technique what would it turn out like ... I am afraid to try would appreciate your advice ... Thanks for all your great Tips
@2010nanarock You know, I am not sure 100%. If you cut your hair towards the front, the front would have shorter layers (longer in the back) but I'm not sure how it would turn out and am too chicken to try this. lol If you do try it, let me know how it goes! XO Carolyn
How ridiculous that anyone would have the audacity to say that people from the south are stupid!!! That just kills me. I happen to be from New York and I think people from the south not only are some of the KINDEST and most genuine people in the world- they are also some of the smartest also!!! Anyway, Carolyn, keep rocking your vids- I think you're great!!! :o)
I just did this myself in my bathroom mirror ! Omg it worked and turned out perfectly , this will save me alot of money over the course of years. No kidding it took me 10 minutes .
not only are rubber bands really bad for your hair..it breaks it when you move it around and try to remove it out of the hair..also this lady is not a professional and no oneeeee should attempt this stupid way on layering the hair...everrr...baaaa
Your comment "this stupid way on laying the hair" couldn't be more inaccurate or misinformed if I tried to find the MOST INACCURATE reply/comment posted on Youtube or any "How-to" site! This method of cutting, (or "way", as you unprofessionally remarked) for an inexpensive, self-cut layering method has been the most posted example ANYWHERE.
"Professionals" on YouTube, eHow, DIYLife, etc., say this is "THE" best method w/o cost for DIY layered haircuts. Detailed videos by the $150 Stylists won't be on these sites, as they "usually" don't post. Unless they are "Teaser Videos", with no real instructions, used to advertise for FREE to get you in their Salon. Don't agree with rubberbands? OK, but to post about the help as the whole method being inaccurate? Yikes, I would not like to be a person in your life.
@camp620 Yes, me again. I usually ignore negative comments posted, but once in a great while, like once a year, this unkindness finally gets to me. After VIEWING A LOT of videos, I still had unanswered questions. "Where should the first curly hair layer be and shouldn't someone mention a need to measure?" No one had said anything until Carolyn explained this! BTW, people with Southern accents aren't "stupid". I think I just experienced your prejudices.
@potterylady1 It depends on how long your fro is. If you can get it on top of your head in a ponytail, then only cut small amounts (baby steps) to see if it'll help. Add more layers (i.e. cut more hair) as you feel comfortable doing. XO Carolyn
Wow. I tried this just now and I have never loved a haircut as much. I should've been doing my own hair this whole time! Thank you sooo much for this video!
@rumors10 You can. I just cut it when its dry so I am sure how much length I am going to lose. If you cut it wet, cut less than you think. Curls shrink a lot. Make sense?
This video is more useful than I imagined. I didn't think what Carolyn was on about would actually work until I tried it myself. I've never found a hairdresser that could cut my curly mop of hair to my satisfaction (at a reasonable price). So anyway, I watched this video, sectioned 2/3 of my hair and did what carolyn said - instant layer. Then I did the top 1/3 on my hair shorter - great result. My hair has volume in a nice balanced shape, no more pyramid shape!!
I am doing this on my 3yo today, I totally understood what she described and that is pretty much how I cut my own hair except I didn't use the rubber band and it was difficult for me get it even, but now I feel confident that I can cut mine and my daughters hair on my own. Thanks for the video :D
Tried it today...lookin' good! Surprisingly this worked on my thick, natural curls. I have a phobia of letting someone else cut my hair because I think some stylists might be intimidated by the texture. I've like having layers, since the top seems to lie flatter than the bottom. Thanks for this simple tip! :-)
@24WISH Yeah, I know that phobia all too well! My top if flatter than the bottom too! Natural curls are great though, aren't they? Glad this worked for you! XO Carolyn
@iluvdrsomuch Sure, scissors need to be very sharp in order to get any cut right. You can buy a semi good pair at any Beauty Supply store. I think the pair I started out with cost around $20. Not the best in the world, but certainly better than I had in school. XO Carolyn
@evoLTenshi Sure! (Wow, youtube finally got my comment section fixed!) Look thru my vids and find the one that says 'trim your hair' or 'trim your own hair'. Its so easy to just trim your ends to get a little length off! Depending on your curl pattern, you may need to cut your hair when its wet. (really curly hair types) If so, don't cut as much as you think. Hair shrinks when its dry! Hope this helps! XO Carolyn
@notaditdot All done!! I think it looks good and the advantage of my hair is that it does bounces back so if there are mistakes, it hides them v. well.
0_0 looks good! i've been going to stylists for 25 years now, and have maybe liked a haircut once or twice!!!! I always thought that it was understandable though, personally, I think my wavy hair is unmanageable, and would be more difficult to cut than straight hair!
haha....... i will see if i can muster the bravery to try this........... perhaps after graduation?!
My hair is super wavy on the ends and very curly underneath. The top lays flat! (figures doesn't it?) This cut works for me everytime, without even measuring it! Try it, you'll like it! XO Carolyn
I tried this last night & I LOVE IT! Once I was ready to cut I got nervous because I felt that I wasn't holding my hair right to get a straight cut, so I used the same rubber bands she uses & placed them working my way up the ponytail, pulling them straight up until there was about 2-3 inches in-between them. Once there was about 4 inches of hair left, I cut it. The tips were off by very little, but that didn't bother me. I washed & dried it with a diffuser, scrunching it. It still looked long!
Yep, it's a little intense dealing with curly hair but measuring it is a great way to make sure curls fall where you want them too. You are also right in not sweating the small stuff. Worrying about small differences in hair length will only drive you crazy and I promise you, no one else will notice a bit! Great job btw! XO Carolyn
I saw this video a long time ago and tried it. Worked great for me. I have very thick, corkscrew curls. I have been to stylists and it never turned it out well. I'm even doing this cut again today. To those posting negative comments-curly hair is unique and what works for YOU and your pin-straight hair may not work for me and other curly-hair people so if you don't like it TURN IT OFF and go to your expensive stylist. Thank you for the great video! This saves me money and I'm happy with my hair.
I watched your video a long time ago, tried this cut & loved it. I have extremely thick, corkscrew curls and this worked out great for me. I'm even going to do this again today. Several stylists I've been to have cut my thick, curly hair, but it's never turned out well. I'm happier just doing this. To the people posting negative comments-very curly hair is unique and whatever works for YOU may not work for me. If you don't like the video then TURN IT OFF! Thanks for the great video!
I have curly hair and always cut it myself but just sort of chop pieces (dry) until I like it, LOL. I'm going to try your method tonight! One thing about curly hair, at least mine, is that it is forgiving if you are a little choppy with your cut, especially if it's layered. No one ever notices if mine isn't perfect. Thanks for the video!
I feel the same way, but some women especially, are really picky about their curls. If you're not that picky, I wouldn't bother measuring your curls at all. Just do the cut and all should be well! Hope you got to try it. I love the zero degree cut! XO Carolyn
I did try it and it worked great! What a cool trick. I did end up taking some additional length off the bottom after I cut it, but it looks great and I got lots of complements on it. Thanks again!
That's fantastic! Women can take control of their own hair. I've been cutting, styling, and coloring my own hair for years. Yes, there is a learning curve, but its so worth the mistakes I've made over the years! XO Carolyn
Thank you for your tutorials! I have wanted to cut my hair for a long time, but just didn't have the nerve. I recently learned how to layer cut my hair, but wasn't really impressed with the end result. Probably because I learned from someone with medium to thin hair and my hair is very thick and (was) to my waist.
After I had cut my hair the first time, I looked up your tutorial and followed your advice. Now, I must say my hair looks great! Thank you so much :)
you are doing a fabulous job ... kudos for your effort ... cud u plzz suggest me a haircut f...my hair is not to straight not to wavy ..i got a oval face shape ... i really am confused and bored wid my long hair ...plzzz if possible do suggest me some cut ...thanx...
Aw... Thanks sweetie! I would try the 'easy layered V cut'. Its one of my most recent videos (if you scan thru them) and is awesome. One simple cut and you'll have a V cut with layers. Watch the video for more details. Its so easy, a chimp could do it! lol I still have this cut in my hair and it's awesome! XO Carolyn
I wished everyone could be as nice as you are sweetheart but they aren't. Its OK though. I am a big girl and can handle it. Mean girls don't have anything better to do I guess... lol Stay sweet! XO Carolyn
You're fine lady. No offense. Each individual has their own opinions and I am so laid back, I don't take offense. You are a wonderful person and don't ever forget that. Thanks for posting a comment and never forget your personal power. Hugs, Carolyn
Its a JVC GZ-MG21u hard drive camcorder. The problem with it, is that it records in mpeg2 video, which are .mod files. The internet does not yet recognize mpeg2 video, so you have to learn how to convert the files to.wmv files. It took me more than a month to figure out how! Once you learn the process, it's fantastic. But don't look to JVC to help you much. I had to read a LOT online and figured it out by myself. Hope this helps you! Carolyn
Thanks Carolyn! You saved me some money!!! I was going to get my hair cut at a salon tomorrow, but went ahead and cut it myself tonight! I have curly hair and cut it dry to be on the safe side! Thank you! (<:
This video helped me a bit , the only thing I wanted to suggest is that if u have curly hair( like myself) you shouldn't EVER CUT IT WHEN ITS WET. It gives the false illusion of your hair being longer, which will encourage you to cut shorter and shorter. When it dries the result will be shorter than you intented!
I tried it and it works great!!! Thanks a bunch. At this time I could not afford to pay $60.00 for a haircut.. Now I can do it for free at home.. Your great
Is there any way to get short layers without cutting your hair short? I have reall long curly hair and I want layers starting from high up, but I don't want to cut my hair short.
Yes, look for my 'layer cut your own hair' video. If I understand you correctly, you want short layers on top of long(er) hair? I haven't tried cutting the top layer short and leaving the layer on the bottom long but it might just work? I dunno how it will turn out though and am too chicken to try this on my own hair. (This comment will make more sense after you watch the video) Let me know what you think. Best wishes Carolyn
Don't worry about measuring. I think it makes this cut too complicated for most people. What I would do, is to follow the instructions in my long layers for longer hair video, except I would wet my hair completely so its as straight as possible. Use detanglers, conditioners, etc so you can easily comb through your hair so there are no snarls, knots, etc. Then cut around an inch off the ends and see how it looks after it dries. If it looks fine, then you'll know you can safely cut more:o) Carolyn
Your video was easy to understand and simple to follow, so 5 stars! I trimmed my medium length, medium thick, curly hair and it looks fine. If I want to have shorter, shaggier layers do I pull my hair up into a ponytail then cut closer to my scalp? My measurement would be around my eyeballs. I'm thinking the layers might be a tad short around the back and I'd end up with a scary puffed out "style."
Laurie, you are exactly right. If you cut the top layer that short, you would have poof in the back. I would make the top layers no shorter than your occipital bone. (bumpy bone on the back of your skull.) If you want to layer cut your bangs, look thru my videos and it's explained in one of them;O)
Loved your video! You explained well and kept it simple. I slightly trimmed my medium thick, medium length curly hair. The thing is I think I want shorter, shaggier layers. Would I pull my hair up in a pony tail, then cut about 4 inches from the top of my head?
thats a load or rubish blunt cuts the one where you put in in a poney tail and cut so 70s. come on get a life and a propper job and get a decent hairdresser to cut ur hair and get a pair of straightners it looks like straw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get a life. I have been licensed for over 17+ years! I learned how to cut my own hair because other hairdressers kept messing mine up and NOT listening to me. If you look at many of my other hair cutting videos, you might just learn something useful! Have a great day!
AGREE TRULY WITH YOU, i used to got o hairdresser and they never listen just criticize d my hair now i just do my own after watching ur vid thanks allot!!
Thanks sweetie! I only trust a handful of hairdressers to cut my own hair and even then, I typically do a better job just cutting it myself. After all, I am the only person who knows what I really want! XO Carolyn
i guess i was having a bad day sorry i ment no harm it was just a comment sorry for my rude attitude thanks for taking the time to respond to my rude comment :)
Having a bad day are we? It is said, that to remember something, you must be exposed to it at least 8 times. If I said the same thing over and over again, it was so you would retain what I've said.
The best way to get rid of annoyances on Youtube, is just to hit the stop button. Why put yourself through 'sheer torture' then complain to me cause you didn't just turn it off?
I think I'm going to try this. It looks really easy. And I haven't cut my hair in 2 yrs. I'm bored with my straight cut. Thanks a lot for uploading this video. Really thanks.
this is so freaking scary! ppl shouldnt be posting them anymore.. its not like if its gonna happen, but some ppl will believe it and get all freaked out !
Thank you too. Let us know how it goes if you cut your hair. You may also want to check out my 'long layered cut for longer hair' video. I have wavy hair, with a strong curl pattern underneath, and I just did the cut without measuring it. It works great for me and is simpler! XO Carolyn
SOMETHING GOOD WILL HAPPEN TO U AT 9:10 SOMEONE WILL CALL YOU OR TALK TO YOU ONLILNE AND SAY I LOVE YOU OR ASK YOU OUT BUT HERES THE CATCH send this to 3 vids
Thanks so much lady! Hope your hair trim went well! I am getting ready to cut my hair (again) so stay tuned. I am ready for a change. lol Oh, and I don't mind the comments (most days). Some people haven't got a lot to do I guess! Have a great day! XO Carolyn
If this is the best you can do, then I feel really sorry for you. People who criticize other people, usually have issues of their own. I am neither weird or a freak and many people really appreciate the information I give! Have a great day! Carolyn
This brings up a good point, really! I think that by the time women with curly hair have grown up, they pretty much know the way their hair should be cut. (wet or dry) (best response) All curl patterns are not created equally. Curl patterns are key though.
For my curl pattern, I can cut it both ways for haircut success, but tight curl patterns that you cannot straighten out for example, are better cut dry. Kinky hair is always cut dry.
Cutting curly is better if done dry. Each curl pattern shrinks up differently than the other curl beside it.
Hairdressers that specialize in curly hair such as Lorraine Massey wash, style, dry the hair before cutting and shaping it. So you see just how much you need to cut. Cutting it wet will usually result in too much hair length being lost in certain areas and ruins the look of curly hair.
Strong curl patterns can be a challenge. If you want to try the cut, only cut a small amount from the bottom of your hair first, (1"-2") and then go up incrementally if the first cut satisfies you. Don't try and straighten overly curly long hair. That'd be too much work. Cut your hair while it's dry. If your hair is that long, you will probably need help. If you are unsure of the cut, don't do it. Have a hairdresser cut it instead. K? Carolyn
Naw, your cool. I like to do this cut dry cause I immediately know how much I'm going to lose. You can do it either way really. There is a video for curly hair, using the same technique so I didn't mention it. You are absolutely right about the tension. XO Carolyn
This is alright... but remember people, always always always wet your hair!!! if its not all completely wet, it can create an uneven cut.
Also, be sure to mention that with curly hair you dont want to have much tension at all when cutting it. (tension is how hard you are pulling on your hair when holding it up to cut it... in a nutshell. for those of you who dont know) if you are not consistant whith the tension, the result will be an uneven cut.
Sorry sweety. Wished I was there to help you! I am getting ready to cut my own hair again, so look for the video. Maybe I'll say something that helps you more! Just take your time and be sure to pull the hair up into the ponytail carefully. Don't get it mixed up. In other words, pull the hair up from the front, into the front of your ponytail, the back into the back, etc.
This is an aweeswome video! I just layered my very curly hair the old fashioned way and it took me about an hour and a half. This is SO much easier and makes perfect sense! Excellent video, Carolyn! Thanks for posting! :)

I think it looks good and the advantage of my hair is that it does bounces back so if there are mistakes, it hides them v. well.
Thank u Carolyn! Let's hope my husband aproves

3mmerz 1 year ago
My hair is super wavy on the ends and very curly underneath. The top lays flat! (figures doesn't it?) This cut works for me everytime, without even measuring it! Try it, you'll like it! XO Carolyn
notaditdot 1 year ago
I tried this last night & I LOVE IT! Once I was ready to cut I got nervous because I felt that I wasn't holding my hair right to get a straight cut, so I used the same rubber bands she uses & placed them working my way up the ponytail, pulling them straight up until there was about 2-3 inches in-between them. Once there was about 4 inches of hair left, I cut it. The tips were off by very little, but that didn't bother me. I washed & dried it with a diffuser, scrunching it. It still looked long!
Racevedo1395 1 year ago

Thanks for the great video!
spacejaden 1 year ago
I have curly hair and always cut it myself but just sort of chop pieces (dry) until I like it, LOL. I'm going to try your method tonight! One thing about curly hair, at least mine, is that it is forgiving if you are a little choppy with your cut, especially if it's layered. No one ever notices if mine isn't perfect. Thanks for the video!
birdpoodle 1 year ago
I feel the same way, but some women especially, are really picky about their curls. If you're not that picky, I wouldn't bother measuring your curls at all. Just do the cut and all should be well! Hope you got to try it. I love the zero degree cut! XO Carolyn
notaditdot 1 year ago
I did try it and it worked great! What a cool trick. I did end up taking some additional length off the bottom after I cut it, but it looks great and I got lots of complements on it. Thanks again!

Hi Carolyn!

Carolyn

:)

Is there any way to get short layers without cutting your hair short? I have reall long curly hair and I want layers starting from high up, but I don't want to cut my hair short.
dhgjas 2 years ago
Yes, look for my 'layer cut your own hair' video. If I understand you correctly, you want short layers on top of long(er) hair? I haven't tried cutting the top layer short and leaving the layer on the bottom long but it might just work? I dunno how it will turn out though and am too chicken to try this on my own hair. (This comment will make more sense after you watch the video) Let me know what you think. Best wishes Carolyn

I have curls but in the top of my hair its only wavy
I dont know how I can cut it
I wear now my hear without layers with a pony on a side
vanashemi 2 years ago
Don't worry about measuring. I think it makes this cut too complicated for most people. What I would do, is to follow the instructions in my long layers for longer hair video, except I would wet my hair completely so its as straight as possible. Use detanglers, conditioners, etc so you can easily comb through your hair so there are no snarls, knots, etc. Then cut around an inch off the ends and see how it looks after it dries. If it looks fine, then you'll know you can safely cut more:o) Carolyn

Oh shoot, I lost my comment! I'll try again.
What do you think?
~~Laurie
Autosuggestionify 2 years ago
Laurie, you are exactly right. If you cut the top layer that short, you would have poof in the back. I would make the top layers no shorter than your occipital bone. (bumpy bone on the back of your skull.) If you want to layer cut your bangs, look thru my videos and it's explained in one of them;O)
notaditdot 2 years ago
Loved your video! You explained well and kept it simple. I slightly trimmed my medium thick, medium length curly hair. The thing is I think I want shorter, shaggier layers. Would I pull my hair up in a pony tail, then cut about 4 inches from the top of my head?
Laurie

IsabellaOrchard 2 years ago
And you are mean! Grow up will ya?
notaditdot 2 years ago
This brings up a good point, really! I think that by the time women with curly hair have grown up, they pretty much know the way their hair should be cut. (wet or dry) (best response) All curl patterns are not created equally. Curl patterns are key though.
For my curl pattern, I can cut it both ways for haircut success, but tight curl patterns that you cannot straighten out for example, are better cut dry. Kinky hair is always cut dry.
notaditdot 2 years ago
SelenaDemiLavomez:
Cutting curly is better if done dry. Each curl pattern shrinks up differently than the other curl beside it.
Hairdressers that specialize in curly hair such as Lorraine Massey wash, style, dry the hair before cutting and shaping it. So you see just how much you need to cut. Cutting it wet will usually result in too much hair length being lost in certain areas and ruins the look of curly hair.
kiandra101 2 years ago
I dont know ... my hair is veryyyy curly and long so I dont know if I can cut it
please rfespond back ^^
hipshak 2 years ago

XO Carolyn
notaditdot 2 years ago
This is alright... but remember people, always always always wet your hair!!! if its not all completely wet, it can create an uneven cut.
Also, be sure to mention that with curly hair you dont want to have much tension at all when cutting it. (tension is how hard you are pulling on your hair when holding it up to cut it... in a nutshell. for those of you who dont know) if you are not consistant whith the tension, the result will be an uneven cut.
