I've always interpreted 'ugly' as referring to the demons that Slug, and many other people, carry with them. He sees his lifestyle as something to embrace rather than be ashamed of, because God has always loved 'the meek' and the broken down. If God will side with anyone, he's going to side with the damage-cases rather than the pristine perfect ones, basically.
