The first time I saw this, I didn't get the enormity of it... now, rewatching it... I nearly cried. And then the Doctor pulled the "and so was I" out and I smiled again. I love all the Doctor's incarnations, but Mr. Eccleston was my first. He's special. :)
God I love this scene. Watching 9 go is like being at the funeral of your favorite great uncle after he died on his 90th birthday; sure it's sad, but you can't really cry because you're too distracted remembering what an awesome guy he was and how great of a life he lead.
Knowing that a Time Lord can regenerate only 12 times, does it mean that we only have 2 more Doctors to go ?? When the 10th Doctor "partly regenerates" touching his severed hand (in The Stolen Earth) does it mean one less to go ?
Gosh I really would have liked Christopher to stay two more seasons. He did a great, great job bringing the Doctor back after all these years wihtout them.
@john98777 No. Chris was. i know he did one year but i think he was the best doctor of the new doctor who. I just think david was a let down after season 4.
I really don't feel Eccleston gets enough credit, he was a fun doctor who really did a great job bringing the series to life again after all these years. I can't say I have a favorite Doctor, but 9th was my first, and I'll say he was my Doctor.
@ZombeWthAJetPak He was more than fun, he brought wonderful gravitas to the role. It must have been intimidating trying to resurrect the character after so many years, with so much riding on you and so many ways to be overshadowed by the legacy of the old show, but Eccleston showed great range and depth; clownish but grave, compassionate but angry, fun-loving but troubled, idealistic but, paradoxically, also cynical. It's a shame he didn't stay on longer.
its funny how when Christopher regenerated they put happy music, but when David regenerated they put powerful, emotional, orchestral, sad music with the TARDIS on fire. i like both doctors, David being my first and MY doctor. and i think maaaaybe some people down at the DW studios might like David better. :) lol just my opinion
@sokmonkeys I just think this scene was filmed before the makers went mad for orchestra and couldn't let ONE SINGLE SCENE go by without murdering it with over-scoring.
@cheesepoofofdoom Sorry, but no. A guy got several billions by answering the Oldest Question In The Universe, Hidden At Plain Sight, in a very nerdy and British way. Keep building your way up, though! XD
I definitely agree with those who are saying that Nine was underrated - he was my first Doctor and I have to say that although I absolutely loved Ten and he, in many ways, defined the Doctor to me, I never quite felt the affinity that I felt with Nine. Nine was gritty and deep and fantastic for that reason. I do not dislike any of the Doctors (because they are all the Doctor), but I can't help feeling that Eleven has been let down by bad writing, even though he has enormous potential.
@TranscendentLion In a way I think this can happen with a LOT of Doctors. :/ Eccleston was lucky to be there during a time when they were determined to make it good so he got chunky good stories, then Tennant got the 'well we're good now, it's fine.' and Smithy's is... Well tonally it's very jumpy. (Just wanna say I love Doctor Who, love all 3 of them, I just can form opinions and have preferences, but love 'em all. ^_^ )
@sylictic Yeah, I would pretty much agree with you there. The episodes and stories for Nine were coming from writers who wanted to start the reboot well, and I think Ten slid a little (going through three companions over as many series - hmm . . . . - and I think Donna was an awful companion, but that's just my taste :P) but overall kept it together well. I agree, I love all of them for different reasons, but yes, I do think Eleven could be much better. :)
They should totally do another episode like the episode The five doctors where all the five doctors met, it would be fucking awesome seeing Eccleston again.
Probably my favourite regeneration: the drama and the heart in this scene is just brilliant, and this was a fine way for Christopher Eccleston's Doctor to go: the way he is so cool about it, not sulking like Ten-Eleven (which I feel was an unnecessarily sentimental way to finish Ten's brilliant tenure). And if he absorbed all the energy of the Vortex and expelled it over the next episode, could it not be in space somewhere and constitute something in the future?
@TranscendentLion It just represents the Doctor's feelings on their own incarnation. The Tenth Doctor was very fond of himself (note that he prevents himself from regenerating the first time because of an ego issue) and that's why it was more drawn out, along with the companion reasons and stuff. Plus the Tenth Doctor was all alone when he regenerated because all his companions had someone else. The Ninth Doctor was trying to comfort Rose is all. Regeneration isn't pleasant.
@TranscendentLion: I agree that the 10th Doctor was brilliant (♥), but his parting ways (so to speak) was excellent and rightly sentimental. He says in the end that he doesn't want to go because he's done and seen so much in that regenerated form and to lose that self for a new 'him,' is frightening. Crap, I don't know, the Doctor is complicated. :O
This is a proper regeneration, Not all pouting around and making everyone feel sorry for you before you dramatically die-- Oh wait, the doctor didn't die, he just REGENERATED. Way to be a selfish vain prick, Ten.
@1451tyler But when a time lord regenerates, everything about that last person dies. They change completely. The 10th doctor even did his quirky things to be closer to his 5th self because that was his favorite, but not completely because they CHANGE. I'm sure you wouldn't want to die and then let someone walk away with YOUR experiences in life and those sad moments you had. No one truly wants to die, so the day he regenerated the 10th him died. I'm sure the 11th doctors will be just as sad.
What i thinks funny is that the 9th doctor really lived the longest because between the 8th doctor back when the old show was playing and the 9th doctor hes just been chilling for a while, David Tennant dies pretty fast compared to Christopher Eccleston.
I remember watching this scene for the time UTTERLY confused because it was the first time of learning about Doctor Who and I didn't understand why the show would stop at one season if he's gonna die, having no clue that this show has been on since 1963 and that by "dying" he was gonna regenerate into a new man. So when David's face came on the screen my reaction was... "WTF?" Thus the curiosity and David Tennant made me into the fangirl I am today. ;)
I love how Nine changes into Ten with a smile on his face, boldly going into his next great adventure. How he talks to Rose and shows how he was planning on taking her so many places. How his last words were meant to reassure her... and himself. Ah, Chris! TT-TT I love Nine. I truly do. I love Ten (David) but his regeneration scene did not have the power that this one did.
it seems as though people who talk about doctor who dont care much for the first doctor and everyone's favorite was the second. i loved chris and i love matt! david i love but not as much as matt
This is when I started watching Doctor who, great Doctor aswell, and to make it better, watching and finding information about the old Doctors was great!
@CYBERDOODY: Admitting that you don't want to die doesn't make you a weakling, and I don't personally think it was out of character. I personally think that both went out their own appropriate way.
@ButterflyofOceans Granted, the 10th doctor was completely alone when he regenerated. The 9th had Rose there watching him. He didn't want to go either, that's why he seemed so sad.
@Petersaberros I couldn't get used to the 9th doctor at first, I was so used to Tennant. Then, I got used to Eccleston, and now I can't get used to Tennant again.
I think they overdid the regeneration effect, It was explosive and gold since he absorbed the Time vortex. But The other doctors + the master had it. I think they should have gotten traditional regens.
i get more depressed watching this than tennants for some reason. maybe cos as great as it was tennants dragged on a bit and dave went out like a girl. whereas chris showed class and dignity going out. that for me is how you should go. btw i loved both a lot. so i aint being biased
At least he regenerated with dignity! I like Tennant's Doctor, but his self-pity thing was kind of off-putting. I mean I get there was,"No one there for him!", but on the other hand, if there was someone there; they would have been injured by the exploding Time Lord or the collapsing TARDIS. lol
what episode is this? someone please tell me! like respond to me dont post it cuz i wont see it

I think they overdid the regeneration effect, It was explosive and gold since he absorbed the Time vortex. But The other doctors + the master had it. I think they should have gotten traditional regens.

@Vaxonblue the tradition regens are boring. they just change their face with no effects at all

The 9th Doctor was my first Doctor, so he'll always be special to me, even though my favourite Doctor right now is Four. :P

Eccleston' performance there was staggering. It was that moment, ironically, that I wished he'd did a bit more.

Oh, Eccleston was my first Doctor. I thought he was brilliant. :( Wish he'd had longer as the doctor...

i get more depressed watching this than tennants for some reason. maybe cos as great as it was tennants dragged on a bit and dave went out like a girl. whereas chris showed class and dignity going out. that for me is how you should go. btw i loved both a lot. so i aint being biased

At least he regenerated with dignity! I like Tennant's Doctor, but his self-pity thing was kind of off-putting. I mean I get there was,"No one there for him!", but on the other hand, if there was someone there; they would have been injured by the exploding Time Lord or the collapsing TARDIS. lol

Ninth Doctor had such a short tenure, but that makes all his episodes so much sweeter in their rarity.
